well you can always flash this torpor bird in in response to the creature coming into play. eg snapcaster mage on the stack, you flash in this torpor bird. torpor bird resolves. then snapcaster resolves and the etb ability fizzles. if you say "ok that resolves" and let snapcaster mage come into play then its too late.
Why would the lpayer playing against the torpor bird let the entire stack resolve before trying to bolt it? You are aware that each player gets priority after each spell on the stack has resolved, right?
thats exactly what i was talking about... i mean if you have a bolt you have to let the bird resolve before you can kill it right? if you dont then snapcaster mage resolves and fizzles. so now if you cast a creature with a etb ability you better make sure you need a bolt or some kind of removal for this torporbird otherwise be in for a brutal savage surprise. im replying to randomdragon about the etb effect on the stack... if you ARE playing the torporbird you jolly well cast this bird BEFORE the creature comes into play... otherwise it be too late for the torporbird once the etb ability goes onto the stack.
So it only stops etb effects that begin with when this.. ..
Exactly. It stops triggered abilities, which doesn't include creatures with "As <this card> enters the battlefield..." and "<this card> enters the battlefield with..."
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.
