I am extremely excited for Torpor Orbs 5-8. And I absolutely love creatures with Flash. This is without a doubt my favorite new card design in the entire set so far.
I'm thinking of how Flash is relevant on this card... I've got a lot of ideas, but for right now, I'm loving the idea of flashing this guy in as my opponent tries to resolve a Kalonian Hydra. Hahaha, so long sucker.

Okay people need to stop saying this is for DnT in modern. I feel like this is an inside joke to recommend every white card printed to DnT, kinda like saying every bad card is for edh. DnT realllllly doesn't want this. Look at the typical DnT list. It DEPENDS on splicer, flickerwisp and resto. This shuts all of them down. I promise you at the moment there is no DnT list running torpor orb. We deal with twin in other ways.
You are right that hatebears is going to love this though. There simply aren't many white based decks that don't depend on etb effects, so I don't think this is going to be as prevalent as you might think. (Junk would be another exception u believe)
I apologize for lumping DnT/Hatebears into the same category. I understand that they are substantially different decks that operate on similar axes. To be honest, I don't pay particular attention to either one on Modern, as they're not all that relevant in comparison to the big boys of the format.
Given what you've said though, you're absolutely right that this guy doesn't make the cut in Modern DnT anymore than it would in Legacy.
It's cool, everyone does hahaha. Sorry if I'm a little defensive about the deck, it's just this always happens :p. Didn't mean to pick on you, a couple others earlier in the thread said the same.

No offense taken. When discussing new cards, it's important that there be some clarification. People get so hyped for new toys without considering the real implications of things.

Currently playing:
Standard: I, for one, welcome our new rhinoceros overlords
Modern: Pod's dead, Bob's back.
Legacy: Lands, Deathblade, Death and Taxes, Elves, MUD
Retired Legacy: Merfolk, Goblins, Jund, Delver, Reanimator
Between this and topor orb I really want to make a modern deck that abuses negative ETB effects like treacherous pit dweller and eater of days. It has the added bonus of hosing pod and twin decks
Oh I was trying to find a way to build around this creature. Are there other creatures with a negative ETB that would be good with Hushwing?
There have been many people who tried to make a Torpor Orb deck work in Modern, but having only 4 slots to hose your negative effect made it difficult. This card might be a big part of the answer. Most of the time, those decks attempted to utilize Hunted Horror and Eater of Days.
That thing is disgusting. A card for Modern. A card for Legacy. A balanced card that is still incredibly strong across formats. Hats off, Wizards.
Not sure where you're trying to slot it in for Legacy. DnT is the de facto choice, but it hoses too much of their own strategy (SFM, Flickerwisp). That deck hardly plays Aven Mindcensor, which carries a much more powerful effect at 3cc w/ identical stats + flying and flash. The 3 spot is already pretty crowded in that deck as it is (Aven M., Brimaz, Flickerwisp, and Mirran Crusader being the main choices these days). At 3 mana for a creature, there's not too many other decks that would bother given the narrow scope of what he does in that format, and considering what others are doing at 3 mana (Show and Tell, LotV, TNN, etc.)
For Modern though, he likely makes the cut over Torpor Orb in DnT/Hatebears. I like that they're staying creative with the scope of hosers they've alotted to White in the last several sets.
Yeah, I agree on Legacy. I hadn't been thinking of its context when I saw the card; it hoses the very deck it would go into.
But he's still awesome in Modern, where two of the three best decks in the format are completely shut down by this card.
well you can always flash this torpor bird in in response to the creature coming into play. eg snapcaster mage on the stack, you flash in this torpor bird. torpor bird resolves. then snapcaster resolves and the etb ability fizzles. if you say "ok that resolves" and let snapcaster mage come into play then its too late.
Why would the lpayer playing against the torpor bird let the entire stack resolve before trying to bolt it? You are aware that each player gets priority after each spell on the stack has resolved, right?

This looks like the most exciting card in the set, more so for Modern than for Standard (but still will almost certainly see play in Standard). How much is too much to pay for a set of 4 when they first become available? I wonder...
I feel like I *should* like this card, but I am underwhelmed. In order to see Legacy play, it would probably have to cost 2 or attack for 3. It is an okay card for Modern I believe, but nothing too crazy as some seem to think.
125 posts on this card in the last 16 hours. There is definitely a lot of excitement/talk behind this card. In Modern Im interested to see how many will use this as a 5-8 Torpor Orb or go 2 and 2 or just replace the Orb all together and for those that dont run Orb well now you have another option.

Does this only affect "whenever x enters the battlefield" effects?
In other words, does this nuke Iona (as Iona enters the battlefield...) it doesn't say whenever
It doesn't need to say...
603.1. Triggered abilities have a trigger condition and an effect. They are written as “[Trigger condition], [effect],” and begin with the word “when,” “whenever,” or “at.” They can also be expressed as “[When/Whenever/At] [trigger event], [effect].”
Mulldrifter says "When Mulldrifter enters the battlefield, draw two cards."
Sun Titan say, "Whenever Sun Titan enters the battlefield or attacks"
Clone says, "You may have Clone enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature on the battlefield."
Iona says, "As Iona, Shield of Emeria enters the battlefield, choose a color."
Iona and Clone do their thing. Mulldrifter doesn't draw cards or sac if you Evoke'd it. Sun Titan only triggers on attacking.
nice all hydra's infact Mistcutter Hydra

They enter with counters so it doesn't shut them off.
