oooh. I'll have to keep a eye out. Wish they'd do more interesting cards, tho. Angels have kind of dominated the promos since my twenty-something Sunblast Angels.
I have neither the skill to correctly and accurately analyze this set in the context of current and future formats after 12 hours of exposure, nor the hubris to delude myself into believing that I do.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
It's not meant to excite us. It's meant to excite the random guy walking through Walmart who sees it and says "oh, Magic, I've heard of that. Yeah, that Duel of the Planeswalkers demo was pretty fun. Oh nice! This pack comes with a sweet angel! I'll buy it!"
Angel Skirmisher is perfect for that job. It's big, flashy, has cool keywords, and is a cool looking angel. And while something like Aurellia would be nice, they generally stray away from Mythic promos anymore. At least, they stray away from easily obtainable Mythic promos. As for shocklands or something similar, that wouldn't excite the new/casual player, and they would all be bought up quickly by people like us. Remember the True-Name Nemesis fiasco?
I have opened some of these before, and the packs tend to me of the sets that don't sell as well, usually more core sets than not. The top pack in the picture here look like its DGM, so expect a lot of core sets + DGM.
I have seen them more often at Walmart, but occassionally also at Target.
I remember when Knight Exemplar and Broodmother popped up in these things... And even a few random intro pack foils and foil lands(lol).
I even managed to find one packaged with the promo Resto angel!
It's a shame they've demoted the promos to silly high costed jank.

They're not going to print promos that are worth anything. Wizards isn't stupid - reprints with high secondary market value tend to go in products that will net them the greatest amount of profit, such as Commander 2013, FTVs, and non-Standard products like Conspiracy and the Duel Decks.
Have we yet to discover the missing (and apparently elusive or forgotten) A5 Big Box Promo? I mean, they went back to give us Terastodon at A6 -- I didn't find him in stores until after picking up A9: Angel of Glory's Rise

so in other words, no one is looking out for the core player: the player who shows up at the lgs weekly, the player who knows what the stack is, the player who wants an easier jumping off point for another competitive deck. it's all about tossing bones to the edh/casual crowd and not upsetting the vendors(who cause things like COMM13/TNN to happen in the first place). talk about player retention...
Core player as in competitive player? They're already vested into this game. What competitive players want is an excellent pool of cards and a diverse meta.
so in other words, no one is looking out for the core player
That's an... interesting interpretation. This is a freaking Wal-Mart promo, of course it's not aimed at heavily invested players. When they put out From the Vault: Angels That Were Only Good in Limited, then feel free to copy-paste that response.

Give me a promo that would make you buy that booster pack bundle. I imagine it would have to be worth 10-15+ bucks to make it even worth your time (never mind that such a promo printed in mass abundance no matter how good of a card, would tank on value extremely fast due to supply vs. demand), the only reason any core player would ever buy from a store like Wal-Mart is to pick up things like Commander decks that might have a higher price at a LGS.
I believe part of the reason that they don't put high end cards in these is also partially because of theft that often occurs. Can't tell you how many times I go to Walmart/Target and see commons, uncommons, and junk rares stuffed behind boxes on the shelves. I can only imagine how much worse that would be if they put actual money cards in these.
I like this. Sure, I would only buy it if I wanted to buy three boosters anyway (for drafting I guess), but getting a halfway decent, good-looking foil card isn't shabby? She's only fringe playable, but she's cool and she's free.
But I've never ever seen a Booster Three Pack like that before, is that a new thing or a US thing...?

It is right up the alley of the type of creature is usually foiled out for the Big Box Store promo and is certainly more useful than Glory's Rise...
Marked as A 11

Established | Gahiji, Honored One | Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker | Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo | Rubinia Soulsinger

Except Angel of Glory's Rise was part of an actual t1 deck for awhile in Inn-RTR while Skirmisher has never seen any decent list.
At least this angel can see some casual play
