So we know they can make something worthwhile (Or, at least, having not seen the series, I'll take reviewers' word for it) with A Song of Ice & Fire. This being one of the greatest fantasy series ever made, I'm not exactly going to hold my breath on them being able to do the same with Magic's lore.

*Insert giant block of annoying garbage that no one cares about but you have to scroll past anyway here*
Jeremy Irons would make a better Urza methinks. John Malcovich is your Tevish Svat.
It would suck to be Crovax though. Take a scrawny guy and have him gain 100 lbs of muscle between movies (assuming storyline wasn't wrapped up in half an hour).
If I was writing it for maximum profitability, I would probably bring them here, at least in the first act.
Then you could have the new earthling planeswalker do the whole 'fish-out-of-water' routine.
But there are a few storylines that would be great spectacles, ROE is the first one that springs to mind.
If its a trilogy I would do Mirrodin into Darksteel, Fifth Dawn into Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged into New Phyrexia.
You can really cover a ton of the old lore from the Thran and Yawgmoth to Urza and Gerrard, and the Mirari and then have Karn be in it. It would be very Lord of the Rings in terms of the dark lord Yawgmoth (Sauron), the Mirari (ring), The Coalition as the Last Alliance, all that sort of stuff. Then the story advances through the old Mirrodin story of Glissa's fellowship and her quest to defeat Memnarch, then things take a drastic turn for the worse and the Phyrexians return in full strength, Glissa betrays the good guys and they have to fight for their survival. Then in the end the bad guys win, our heroes flee save Koth, and the survivors brace themselves for what may yet come.
Having the Phyrexians win is such a trope breaker for the genre. I really think that's the core of what Magic is about. We'll still get Elspeth and some of the other Neowalkers involved to some extent, but the focus will be on this larger struggle that really defines the game. Also Elesh Norn.
That is a damn good team already. This is going to be great! Don't get much better cred than Game of Thrones!
Like the new Star Wars ditching the EU, they probably won't pull straight from an existing novel or word-for-word plotline. Those stories weren't written with major motion pictures in mind. I think a multiplanar chase/mystery with Jace, Chandra, Liliana is going to play great on the screen.
Something to note: the Warcraft movie (with Duncan Jones directing Vikings' Travis Fimmel; Ben Foster as Medivh; etc) forewent the more known WoW story to go back and tell the Warcraft 1/2 origin story, to play better on the screen. So we could get a wild card like that with pros like Kinberg and Cogman on board here.

Quote from Skullum »
that's not what happened at all. kamahl stabbed phage, akroma, and some old lady and they became korona. then korona got stabbed by her "prophets" and kamahl got drunk with a mutant centaur
I was thinking the same thing like a Pixar type of production. The thing is after seeing reeves moive 47 ronin and malficient along with the lotr and hobbit movies I think think we have the technology to make this a great movie. If the story line is centered around neo walkers I would love for the following actors/actresses to be involved:
Cumberlatch (cant spell) as Bolas voice
Rock as Garruk
Mila Kunis as Liliana
Jennifer Laurence as Elspeth
Zack Efron as Jace
Patrick Stewart as Ajani voice
Karen Gilian as Chandra
Triple H as Gideon
Tom Hiddleson as Sorin
Praying to the Old Gods, The Seven, Serra, The Therosian Gods that they source from the Magic's deep and rich lore and do not make something that's "based from the series".
Coz we know how well such things fared for some films.
Magic's deep and rich lore. Hahaha, that's hilarious.
If I were you, I'd refrain from making comments on topic you are apparently entirely ignorant in.
While the "new" magic lore (basically from introduction of the neowalkers) is rather shallow, the old stories like Brothers' War, The Thran, the first two thirds of the Weatherlighs saga (esp. Nemesis) are high quality and incredibly well-fleshed and well-written books.
So again, if you don't know a thing about it, don't ridicule it...

This is one of the things I really hope they avoid. Every time I think about it I see visions of the He-Man movie. I would rather they stick to a total immersion in fantasy from the magic multiverse. If they absolutely must grab an earthling into the story though I hope he/she is from a fictional version of earth with dragons and magic and the like.
I think a MtG film would be better as an animation. Much cheaper for the kind of spectacle you come to expect from the novels/planeswalker guides.
Pretty sure their goal is mainstream appeal, not catering to the fans who are a pretty small overall portion of the populace. Keep in mind the studio will be in this to make money, and the best way to do that is with a special effects bonanza and a lot of media hype. Anime could make for a couple of good films, but there really aren't that many blockbuster animated movies that aren't also childrens movies. Thanks to the GoT series, fantasy is in vogue, so there is a very real chance they go all out with this.

Now find a cast that doesn't make the movie about a bunch of 20-somethings who discover their inner spark and battle it out. I personally need characters like Elspeth and Liliana to be somewhat older to be believable.

Nah. I've been around for a while and I know the story. It's really kind of dumb. luckily the actual game is fun, because magic's writers are no Mark Twain.

“A man's at odds to know his mind cause his mind is aught he has to know it with. He can know his heart, but he dont want to. Rightly so. Best not to look in there. It aint the heart of a creature that is bound in the way that God has set for it. You can find meanness in the least of creatures, but when God made man the devil was at his elbow. A creature that can do anything. Make a machine. And a machine to make the machine. And evil that can run itself a thousand years, no need to tend it.”
― Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West
I'm really curious how this turns out in the end. I just hope its at least decent, there's so much great material they could use. They could even introduce a brand-new young planeswalker, and the challenges and hardships he/she has to face when he/she learns that theres an entire multiverse full of possibilities!
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
I'd watch 120 minutes of Garruk inflicting whatever brutal punishments he can think of upon that witch. You don't just take a man's green mana. You just don't do that.

Uh, but Elspeth is young and Liliana is eternally youthful. Both should be played by 20-somethings, or at least actors who look 20-something. There are plenty of planeswalkers in the cast who would benefit from being portrayed as a little older but you've chosen the two who should certainly be portrayed as young.

I don't see how this is a bunch of 20 something's plus the youthful actors and actresses are supposed to be so because their characters are young. We can't have a cast like xmen where everyone was 40 when it began in the 90's.

Don't give them too much credit. The show is good because of the source material. While they handle the material quite well the execution is actually does not elevate the predetermined events of the novels at all and at times feels more flat and unexciting.
That does not mean that actually working with more artistic freedom might not actually result in them creating a better cinematic experience. It just means that the situation is very different for the Magic movie.

I've said this before, but Mila is petite and has a babyface, so I don't think she'd fit Lili well.

Yeah, I would be looking to cast lilly as voluptous. Facially she has a good look (she does the smoky eyes thing really well), but body wise I don't think she fits- too small, too skinny, and not nearly curvy enough.

Exactly my thought. I always recall the original Ravnica trailer in this context.
I don't even understand why anyone would want the movie to be live action.
