EXCLUSIVE: It was inevitable, that the writers and directors of HBO’s staggeringly good Game Of Thrones would begin taking over the fantasy realm in features. 20th Century Fox has set Bryan Cogman, a producer, story editor and writer on the HBO drama, to script a potential franchise movie out of the fantasy card game Magic The Gathering. It will be produced by Hasbro and Fox-based producer Simon Kinberg.
Fox acquired the rights last January on Magic The Gathering, a role playing game that was hatched in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast. It became a raging geek success and hatched a collectible-trading-card-game movement. There are creatures, wizards and magic spells and players use all of them to defeat each other. Hasbro bought the company in 1999. When they have time, the GOT guys are getting more and more feature jobs; Alan Taylor directed Thor 2 and is now helming the first in the Terminator trilogy. Cogman’s repped by UTA and Management 360.
Praying to the Old Gods, The Seven, Serra, The Therosian Gods that they source from the Magic's deep and rich lore and do not make something that's "based from the series".
Coz we know how well such things fared for some films.

I wish my 4/4s with haste and first strike that acted as Goblin Warchiefs were better and didn't die to instants and overshadowed all other 4 drops in the format. And that they had evasion too, and some way to dodge wrath effects.
Well as long as they cast Jeremy Irons as the villain again, it'll at least be entertaining to watch. In that "flaming train wreck full of fireworks and clowns" kind of way.

Irons would be kickass as Tevesh Szat and you know it.
I have heard that the movie is set in the Brothers War, but nothing else. However I do hope it will be better then that D&D stuff and closer to the LOTR calibur animation/acting ect.

“A man's at odds to know his mind cause his mind is aught he has to know it with. He can know his heart, but he dont want to. Rightly so. Best not to look in there. It aint the heart of a creature that is bound in the way that God has set for it. You can find meanness in the least of creatures, but when God made man the devil was at his elbow. A creature that can do anything. Make a machine. And a machine to make the machine. And evil that can run itself a thousand years, no need to tend it.”

Actually if you go by the Shandalar's comics Bruce Payne fits the character for real...
As a Thrones fan & MtG player, I am very much excited for this news. Now they just need to announce that Neil Marshall's going to direct the battle scenes.

I imagine it will center around the lorwyn 5 (or some variation of them), since there is already a market for those characters and they are well known.
I have heard that the movie is set in the Brothers War, but nothing else.
That seems really unlikely. The made their current Planeswalkers specifically because they market well.
Doesn't mean the movies have to be neowalkers, having an origins movie featuring some of the oldwalkers isn't a bad thing, also would explain how the first nonNicol Bolas walkers planeswalked for the first time. Brothers' War was also the first major plot of the game as it lasted through more sets then the previous. Urza as a character also lasted a long time.

A lot of casual players who don't follow the stories would not be interested in that for a first movie. They could go back and do the brothers war later as a prequel but to start they will start off with what they have a market for. Expect Jace to be the protagonist.

Once upon a time, years and years before the movie was actually announced, it was considered practically a given that were a Magic movie to be made it would be about The Brothers' War. You probably heard from someone who came from this angle, or heard it from someone else who did. But that was before Time Spiral and The Mending. The Brothers' War made sense at the time because everything tied back to it, largely because "everything" was pretty much "Weatherlight and a couple of peripheral plotlines". It no longer has such a strong connection to the ongoing storylines, and it bares little resemblance to the stories they're trying to tell with the neowalkers. This rumour is just a remnant of what once made sense, preserved by those who cannot or will not understand that it no longer does.
