Movie, book, secondary set like Conspiracy or FTV... all seem possible. Personally I would love to see the pre-mending PWs as previously mentioned; Terefi, Urza, etc.

If someone is playing Icy Manipulator against you, you've already won.
This isn't for a set. They probably just want to own the word planeswalker, for general purposes.
Not possible, unless they filed the trademark incorrectly.
Why not? It looks like they have all their bases covered (cards games and accessories thereof, entertainment services including film and video games) and Planeswalker is a word Richard Garfield made up, no reason they can't have a trademark on it.
I mean this doesn't stop someone from making "Planeswalker Brand Coffee" but I don't think Wizards or Hasbro is planning anything like that.

There are two ways to file a trademark: 1A filings are for trademarks you're already using, and 1B are for trademarks you intend to use in the future. If WotC was simply trademarking the term planeswalker to cover their bases, filing under 1A is easier, cheaper, AND accessible to them since they've been using the term for decades. Filing under 1B means that, in effect, WotC is saying "We want to trademark this mark, but we haven't used it yet for these purposes and will be using it in the future." These filings require additional paperwork, fees, and are a bigger pain in the ass to file.
This can ONLY mean that, in the future, WotC will be using Planeswalker in a way that haven't before - be it rebranding, new products, or even for some new MtG catchphrase or whatever. I can't guess that, but from this filing, it is clear that something new WILL be happening with the word. You can wait till they post a specimen (example) of what they'll be using it for (which will be required in the future under 1B filing).
My best guess is more clothing/card sleeves/dice/bags/paraphernalia with the Planeswalker brand.

What if any is the significance of the listed prior registrations being those for Duels of the Planeswalkers?
None for purposes of WHAT the patent is for. Listing related patents both strenthens their claim on the word (since the related patent has the word in it) and preempts the examiner from denying the patent because a similar patent exists. It has no impact on the future use of this mark.
Curiously, "planeswalker" was abandoned in 2013. I wonder why. (it was filed prior to DotP and all that.
A new take on a Vanguard style game would be cool. Something like Commander but designed around using Planeswalkers rather than Legendary Creatures. If it came with Old Walker cards that would sell so much.
But there's no reason to assume that's what this is. Could just be merchandise. Could be an entirely new format. Who knows. Fingers crossed for Commander Planeswalker.

This already exists, though only as an unofficial variant.
I was also wondering if this product could be an attempt to "officialize" the format.
It would definitely be nice if they printed some pushed, multiplayer-centric PWs.

I'm not familiar with the variant but I assumed there must be one since its so obvious. I mean the game is basically about the Legendary Creatures and Planeswalkers.
I'm just trying to imagine what a WUBRG Taysir could do. He'd be limited in what decks could play him, but so glorious.
They need to make a RPG video game (a la Knights of the Old Republic or Elder Scrolls) where you can customize your PW and their abilities and planeswalk to different worlds. Imagine being able to explore Mirrodin or Ravnica.
It would be interesting if this was a new format. I know we just got Conspiracy, but would making a set/format around the old, omniscient Walkers be totally surprising?

Oh? What's it called? Sounds interesting.
I'd love for this to be supported by WotC - if only for some nice Planeswalker based products. The Duel Decks are nice, but those are more for a last hurrah in standard. And with them printing 5+ new ones a year, the odds of any one planeswalker card being reprinted gets lower and lower.

I would buy that Day 1. No questions asked. It would be sweet to see what the Planeswalking looks like.

It plays horribly. We tried it out and having an almost unlimited number of tries to ultimate a given walker is not fun and interesting gameplay. Venser, the Sojourner, Tamiyo, the Moon Sage, Tezzeret, the Seeker, Nicol Bolas and Domri Rade were all egregious offenders. It also only has one 3 color commander available in Nicol Bolas, and at the time we didn't have a G/W or G/U walker... Stick with regular EDH, the planeswalker variant is only cool in theory : /

Damn, sorry to hear that. I still love the idea. I'm sure someone at WotC will eventually run with this idea and try again, maybe in a supplementary product or something. It's got too much potential, and pushes the magic brand, which is something they've REALLY been doing recently, this past year in particular.
they will make a series of Planeswalker movies. After it gets popular, they will license it to FFG who will make a LCG based on this now hit franchise.
I would guess that the filing of the trademark as 1B is either a mistake (since they file trademarks for new terms all the time, but don't necessarily need to do that for old terms) or because it needs to cover the movie, too, which would be future use.
