Combos pretty hilariously with mana echoes in a goblin deck. Pretty much always crapping out your whole deck once he and it hit the board if you build it right. Even if you only have about half goblins you'll reach critical mass very quickly (since he already counts as a goblin). With things like siege gang commander and similar nonsense, it's probably nuttier.
And the black means fetching should be pretty easy.
like cellar door, although instead of putting them into dungeon he is releasing them for help. Since Dungeons are in the lower parts of buildings he takes it from the bottom. He has interesting flavor as he only releases prisoners for you. If they have power greater they stay locked up (graveyard). Funnily enough the stronger you make him the stronger creatures he is willing to release.
I don't know if he's a replacement for Wort, but he will definitely go in the same deck. I love any Commander that encourages the use of low CMC cards, like Edric and Talrand.
And the same character as on Backup Plan. So Brago and Muzzio got conspiracies with their names in it, but Grenzo, Selvala and Marchesa are just depicted on their arts. (Secrets of Paradise for Selvala, and Power Play for Marchesa)
I love this card. Neat and innovative design (especially in RB!!), "answer" to Condemn, Terminus, Hinder, etc., combo with scry....nice art....just love it.

I think I want to make and EDH with him just because he is awesome looking.
I tend to think most new cards are garbage (not that I'm a snob, but the odds are really stacked against anything making a dent in EDH where almost every card for 20 years is legal) and RB isn't a color scheme that does anything for me. But this one really piques my interest - Tribal? Combo? Stax? What? It's one of the most unique feeling cards in a long time.
It seems like this set is basically designed to be boiled down to its grixis parts and built as a commander deck with the Black Rose as a commander. Everything these colors is so good.

Glad I'm not the only one seeing that. I mean, they printed Reito Lantern in this set and THIS guy? Silly.
I'm liking him. A lot. And I'm not really a fan of goblins in general. I think this guy would fit right in an EDH deck with a Grixis general. And I see the flavor as being, "rogue warden kills his threats and releases the weaker prisoners that he doesn't care about". Or perhaps "rogue warden kills the worst prisoners and lets the innocent weaklings go free". I like the first interpretation better.
Anyway, back to functional talk. Do you guys realize how many cards in Grixis colors, plus artifacts and lands, let you stack the bottom of your library? So. Many. It's a viable archetype. And I would loovvvveee to try it out. Marchesa as the general, this guy in there with some protection... every time he attacks the player with the most life, you can immediately pull bigger things from the jail. Also, I love the idea of saying, "I'm responding to you declaring attackers by letting someone out of prison.... and THIS GUY will block for me! Oh, you killed him... good thing I can pay a little to put him back on the bottom and oops, he's out again."
OK, so I was right in my suspicions that Grenzo was our monstrous legendary.
And...
Uhm.
I'm sorry, he's just a bit underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, he's a triumph of flavor and barely-seen design space, but in suspecting that he would be an R or R + allied color and looking at Treasonous Ogre's flavor text, I guess I had my sights set too much on a really menacing and aggressive take on the set's political theme, like Threaten-effects and sacrificing or torture.
This is just some really really kooky resurrection that plays well with card-manipulating effects, and fiddling with card positions isn't BR's style. It's cool that Reito Lantern and Junktroller now have a new favorite Commander, (besides Scion of the Ur-Dragon) but all in all, dear Grenzo comes off as kind of "eeehhh" to me. The fact that he's a Goblin doesn't help in my eyes. I was getting used to not seeing their over-represented mugs so much with Innistrad and Theros.
Still, he's not a complete letdown. An X +1/+1 counter Commander in BR, the premier temporary-fast-mana colors? That alone has some nasty potential.

Yep, I do believe he's going to make Red/Black generals fun again, but this screams super combo, I mean, Ashnod's Altar, Reito Lantern and this guy at 9 power, yep, so I'll just take back anything that's in my yard now thanks. though I do believe anything that makes more then 2 bodies with these out gives you infinite colorless, net 1 per activation, so um Siege-Gang Commander anyone?
To be fair, that's a four card combo, which usually is the point at which I'm willing to call it okay. But yes, Reito Lantern basically becomes "5: Put target creature card in your graveyard with power less than or equal to Grenzo into play." which is a pretty strong synergy.

Yeah it is a four card combo, but still being able to assemble all the pieces as early as turn 4 or 5 in red/black, depending on how you build the deck means there's quite a lot of potential here for this guy to be fair.

Presumably getting to be a Legend in this world requires being smart. He's not going to release things bigger than he is.
I do think he'll make rounds in Legacy goblins. He seems like a very powerful one-man army in that deck. He even comes in with the added versatility of an X cost. We'll see how it goes.
I really adore the flavour, originality, and strength of this legend. I can just picture him freeing the prisoners of the bottom most cells, but killing the ones he doesn't think he can control. It's so nice that they built a simultaneously a flavourful, original, and powerful creature, it seems like it's such a rarity. Overall, I really think both this, and Marchesa, the Black Rose are fighting for my favourite legends of sets within recent memory.
