In this thread: people who forgot cube was a format.
To be fair, I really doubt the people who are complaining that Paliano literally isn't playable in constructed will be placated by acknowledging that it's decent in Limited and Cube.
Granted, it's a little greedy of us Constructed players to want every card in a draft-focused set to also be playable in our pet formats, but I'm guessing most of us are already a little sensitive, seeing as how the majority of any given set is already focused on limited formats. Plus, it's unlikely we're ever going to get a format focused entirely on Constructed, while we watch as formats specifically tailored towards limited play are spoiled.
The thing is, the reprints in this set, are probably going to include some incredibly playable constructed cards...
Just not for the constructed formats the majority here care about (Standard and Modern).
Which... shouldn't be a shock, given that Standard can't get cards this way, and Modern got it's product last year at this time (MM1).
It's another cool fun draft card, I'm a little miffed that wonderful art is on a card I can't casual constructed, but it's still a boss card for what the set is aiming for.
Paliano is fantastic design, but I just think it really really sucks that such gorgeous land artwork has been put on a card that people will only get to use in drafts.

People need to stop freaking out about draft-only cards, they won't hurt your rare pulls, they're in the basic land slot. Chill out.
THAT SAID...
These make for really uninteresting previews. Generally people get interested in cards because they have a cool effect that they think they'll be able to use well, which generally means for decks they have for constructed. I mean sure, it's nice that there might be a good land when you're drafting, but you can't reliably count on getting it, nor can you really think you're going to be able to specially abuse it. Compare it too when Marchesa was spoiled - she's a cool card, and while I guess I'd be happy to see her in draft, I'm a lot more excited about how I might be able to construct a deck around her in EDH. In limited, even if I do happen to pull one and happen to be able to use those colors, I can't really utilize her to the same degree that I could when constructing around her, even if I got her P1P1.
So, bottom line, it's hard to get that excited about cards for limited. I'm looking forward to the set and I think it'll be fun, but as far as generating anticipation I'm way more interested in cards for constructed. And it's been a week of almost entirely draft-only cards. I am bored.
I think people are way over-focusing on paliano, though. The conspiracy seems really strong in P1. You can take whatever bomb rare you open/pass in pack 2/3 (or even that bomb you P1P1ed but turned out to be taken) and stick it in your deck as though it were colorless. Paliano is decent fixing. Unexpected potential is like a free bomb - and at uncommon it's going to make drafting off-color bombs way more viable. Way more interesting for draft imo.
I like both of the spoiled cards, good for limited and cube.
So far this set has been a homerun for me as it has adds wonderful elements to drafting that did not exist before as it makes it more interesting to draft and also more interactive during the drafting phase.
Is it just me, or does Paliano not work as intended? First the player to the left chooses a color, then you choose a color, then the player to the right...what's stopping him from naming the same color you named? The card doesn't say they have to be different colors. We can assume you won't pick your left neighbor's color, but the player to the right has no reason to pick a color not already chosen. So unless I'm mistaken, this land will only ever produce two colors, not three.
So the land does absolutely nothing in 99.99% constructed game?
In 100% of constructed games, yes. Not very surprising, Command Tower does nothing outside of its format either. Not everything needs to be playable outside of its own format.
No, 99.99%. It still nets mana with cards like Chromatic Lantern or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, and the fact that it doesn't do anything can be used to your advantage with cards like Shifting Borders and Vedalken Plotter. Unlikely situations, but sometimes a card that is horrible in every way is exactly what you need.
There's nothing wrong with a draft only land. Indeed it was to be expected with this set. But there is something wrong with a land this bloody boring. What a waste of potential when the other draft cards are so interesting. Its just a cruddy triland. It could be an unconditional rainbow land like command tower and nobody would be bothered since its format exclusive. Just making mana isn't worth the draft order shenanigans, seems unnecessarily complex.
Errrrhmergerd, nutha card dat doesn't werk outsides da draft.
Seriously people, do you know what this set is?
Calm your tits. This set is literally designed to be a cube stand-in, so of course everything is focused on drafting. And of the cards that only work in draft, you'll only ever see one, maybe two depending on if they're on the foil sheet, per draft. I don't quite remember how they handled that with DFC's.
Also, I really like unexpected(Which is mislabeled in the title BTW), it's free reign to pick any one off-color bomb.
And of the cards that only work in draft, you'll only ever see one, maybe two depending on if they're on the foil sheet, per draft.
As I understand it you will see on average 3 drafting cards per card pool. In every 8-man there will be 24 draft specific cards instead of basic lands. The foil sheets probably skew this a bit, but I don't think we have information on how much.
Cool cards..... But this set is definitely something I will be playing for fun only. Was going to buy a box or two but I'm just going to draft it a couple of times.
Dude: As pointed out, 3 different colors must be named for Paliano.
So, basically Paliano produces X colors of mana, where X is 2+number of Palianos drafted by a given player. (This assumes that your opponents name the same colors so that you don't get 5 colors with 2 Palianos.)

That was per-pack I was referring to, pardon my mental wires getting crossed. You could see a whole lot more in a draft.
People need to calm down. It's been said multiple times that the draft matters cards will replace the basic land slot. I welcome such cards as they make the drafting experience unique and flavorful. Now give me my Warp World!

There´s a big difference in naming "Another Color" Than naming a "Different Color" Another color could easily be the same color
