Regarding DOTP 2015 - This time we'll get two different Promos (2 Special booster packs). One for those who download on Xbox Live Arcade and one for Steam/Ipad/Android/Kindle.
This is always how they've handled the DotP promos, each platform gets a specific promo card. I've always figured that it was incentive to get people to double dip if they owned multiple devices.
I just hope the promos are better this year, last year wasn't even worth it unless you got the mobile promo.
I know. I do remember that they used to have 3 different packs (a special booster + promo for Playstation 3) and this time we only get two.
Another online pre-release I'll be skipping as well, these packs mean that you *have* to visit the store in a specific timeframe to buy some promo item to enter instead of being able to just use tickets you have acquired beforehand.
That and I am not a fan of the seeded colour packs, it wasn't too bad for Ravnica with guilds and all, but I think it makes everyones sealed deck that little bit more bomby. I think some of the fun of sealed is trying to work with what you have, the sealed packs almost make it a 6 booster draft deck.
... but I think it makes everyones sealed deck that little bit more bomby. I think some of the fun of sealed is trying to work with what you have, the sealed packs almost make it a 6 booster draft deck.
I don't know how you get this. I find that I am rarely able to go with my chosen color, and that is the frustrating part. I don't mind classic sealed, but if they are going to seed, then I think it should be a more likely slam dunk. You feel like you wasted your choice when you can't go with it. And of course, the promo's aren't really bombs, or at least haven't been recently, so they don't drive you to the color like they should. My store gave us the option to just get six packs instead of the promo (when colors ran out), and I think I would do that over the Journey-level of promo.
White prerelease promo: Some lame 6cmc flyer that brings something back from the graveyard after attacking
Red prerelease promo: Some 6-7cmc winmore dragon (perfectly in line with red's desire to go big)
Blue prerelease: Somewhat 6cmc fish that locks down a couple of creatures or something.
Black prerelease: 7cmc demon that doesn't do anything particularly fun but might steal a limited game
Green prerelease: 6cmc hydra that lacks trample and will probably be pacifism-ed
White : the signature creature from the W planeswalker (Ajani or Gideon)
Blue : the signature creature from the U planeswalker (Jace)
Green : the signature creature from the G planeswalker (Nissa)
Red : the signature creature from the R planeswalker (Chandra)
Black : the signature creature from the B planeswalker (Lilianna)
Maybe ?
(Signature creature = Garruk's Horde, or Jace's Mindseeker)
Seeded packs only really work when you're picking factions (Mirran vs Phyrexian, Ravnica guilds) rather than specific colours. I'm disappointed that they seem to think seeded packs make for a fun system. All it does is create supply issues and bad feelings when people can't get the colour they want.
This. I just want it go to back to being 6 booster packs without any gimmicks. Is that too much to ask?
I loved the seeded bosster packs in theros, because I attended 2 events and pulled a foil Thassa and a foil Erebos (SCORE!!!) But now... Remember in scars when promos were good? Those were the days...
Seeded booster packs and playable intro pack rares are the absolute worst. Go back to actual playable cards that nobody can actually play with in their sealed decks.
I wish my 4/4s with haste and first strike that acted as Goblin Warchiefs were better and didn't die to instants and overshadowed all other 4 drops in the format. And that they had evasion too, and some way to dodge wrath effects.

Could not agree more. The promo should have value for constructed play, like it once did. Getting some junk rare as a promo that can and will only be used in the prerelease is so problematic. It forces color most of the time, and is just dissapointing not to get an additional ACTUAL booster pack.
Just be patient, it would soon go back to the regular 6 pack prerelease. I heard that they are doing this because "People loved it". Soon enough, if this becomes the norm, they will get bored of it. They only "love it" because the seeded pack prerelease is different from the norm. If I had to do the seeded pack thing for every set forever, then I would totally be bored of it.
I actually like the seeded packs. At least you know that one card you get will be a bomby card to help you score some victories. It's better than opening six packs divided among equal amounts of Jank in each color and wasting your money. lus people who love a certain color can play that color. I also like promotional cards. I for one am happy about this.
Picking a color doesn't mean you'll be playing that color unless you're willing to play it no matter what. You're still opening 5 normal packs and the seeded pack which can just as easily end up as piles of jank. Hell, most of the promos are pretty janky. I don't know how this one seeded pack makes it so you're not "wasting your money".

You pick the color you would like to play. And when you can't play it because none of the other packs line up on color, it sucks. I mistakenly picked Dimir for my first Gatecrash prerelease and then was forced to play Naya. Granted I did a lot better than I would have I had stayed Dimir. But I picked the Dimir pack because I wanted to play Blue/Black and when I couldn't I felt gypped. Not having seeded packs relieves this anticipation/disappointment problem that shouldn't be there in the first place.
In WOTCs defense both rosewater and forsythe have acknowledged via social media that people are getting tired of the playable promo concept and that they are working on other ideas.
In the defense of the seeded packs, for players who are new to Magic, players who don't "get" sealed, players who generally only play during pre-release/release day events, players who don't actively keep up with every spoiler and podcast and review, basically anyone who takes the game less seriously than a forum-goer: the seeded packs aren't confusing. They aren't overwhelming. No, the packs aren't always good for the chosen color/guild/god/soup du jour, but when someone is staring down 90 cards, it sure makes it easier to grok.
I'm getting plenty bored of them too, but just like certain cards, they aren't for me.
The seeded packs are geting really boring. I suppose I don't want any more dice, I have enough. Bringing back the 6 boosters with the non-playable promo would nice for a change. If they feel risky enough they should start reprinting Tournament packs. I really miss tournament packs.

unbelievable. You guys are such incredible whiners. I am glad you'll be skipping the prereleases, and while you're at it skip Game Day and the next block as well. What I'm tired of is people that keep longing for "the good old days" rather than embracing new things that shake things up a bit. But at least I feel good that when you guys create your own card game it will have all the best elements and never get boring to any of its players. I wish you much success
I'm fine with pick-a-colour prerelease boxes for core sets, but I really wish they would have done something different for Theros block.
Four prereleases in a row that have the exact same gimmick... That's getting seriously boring.
I agree, hopefully they will do something new with this in stead of stagnate. Maybe give us seeded boosters for a certain mechanic or creature type. Wizards has found an interesting gimmick they just need to explore the potential.

I'm with you completely! If you guys hate the prerelease packs so much, just don't attend and save that money for singles.
Personally I enjoy this kind of prerelease because I'll get something to remember the event. I'll get a pretty cool box for my collection, prerelease promo for my collection and a cool dice. M14 prerelease was kind of lame in my opinion when you didn't get anything but the boosters. Even the bonus dice would've been sweet.

I'm getting plenty bored of them too, but just like certain cards, they aren't for me.
And as for the whole: Prerelease getting you amazing cards that you couldn't play but would totally see constructed play so it's fine:
Uh...well, I don't keep up with the constructed scene but, did the Kiyomaro, First to Stand promo do any good? Wren's Run Packmaster? Allosaurus Rider? Korlash, Heir to Blackblade? Feral Throwback? Any of the Kaldra cycle before Fifth Dawn? Hell, how much play did Ravenous Demon get? Bloodlord of Vaasgoth? Comet Storm? Malfegor? Moonsilver Spear?
These are honest questions, I don't know jack about Constructed deck popularity/strength, especially not before I joined.
