Battlefield is a good card but I don't think it's a $8-$9 card like people have it at on eBay. Not saying it won't be worth that or over later if it is deemed playable and abusable, but $8-$9 seems a little high on speculation right off the bat. But hey, if people pay it more power to them.
Wait... the way Thaumaturge is phrased... will a spell with a single target cost 1 less? Strictly better Goblin Electromancer? Did I miss something really obvious and make a complete fool of myself? XP if not that would be bonkers.
As far as dragons are concerned, doesn't Niv Mizzet semi-regularly make idiotic clone dragons so the people of Ravnica can see how amazing he is in comparison?

The ability is not strictly better, because many spells don't target creatures (or at all).

I doubt it can stay at such numbers either, seeing as the event deck has this card (pretty sure that's the cover art).
spoils of war? My opponent has 4 creatures in his grave, I have 4 on the field, so for B I get to put 4 +1/+1 counters on all 4 of my spirit tokens that I made with lingering souls? And swing for 20!

Ah yes, completely missed that. I was thinking too much about BB Hero's Downfall and other kill spells.

I could see some fun interactions with Thaumaturge and Rolling Thunder in multiplayer. I think his most noteworthy application might simply be making your removal cheaper, though.

Patch me back to my mind
That Thaumaturge does some silly things with Far//Away being able to protect itself and get insane value...Doom Blade and Ultimate Price become B, Hero's Downfall BB, that new instant black exile spell is 3BB + 1B to exile 2 + another target creature, Last Breath becomes W, or conversely can go America and Lightning Strike turns into Lightning Bolt (if targeting creature..), Warleader's Helix cost 1RW, Turn // Burn becomes pretty silly at 1U & R.....yeah. This guy going to be good.
Also, I'm not sure if I am right with cards like Far // Away and Turn // Burn...if you fuse the card does it count twice for each spell, or once for each spell (so for example, Far // Away cost U / 1B or U / B?)
Too bad no real way to abuse him in Modern Control since all your spells have no colorless mana requirements except Electrolyze.
Edit: Just realized my mistake with Far // Away since Away sac's, but what about Turn // Burn since both spells target? Would it reduce each spells cost by 2, or 1?
1 blue mana
Sorcery
Target opponent reveals a removal spell from his, then discards this card and activates any combination of mana abilities that would have been able to cast that spell. That mana drains from that player's pool.
Because no way is anyone going to let that live. It's completely bonkers!!! The ability alone to make any single target instant or sorcery cost 1 mana is already pretty good (but less so than in the case of the above-mentioned Electromancer). The shenanigans you can do with Strive spells and certain Multikicker variants.
yeah but all you need in your hand is any spell that targets it, that won't kill it
Thaumaturges second ability just feels useless, even if the first one is good. What happens?
Ok, I cast a spell targeting him. It goes on the stack. Then the ability goes on the stack. Then my opponent casts removal targeting him. Hoh boy

Perhaps, but all you have to do is run something that targets the Thaumaturge to give the bonkers bastard hexproof.

So clearly, Wizards wants Thaumaturge strive decks to be a thing. I can see that happening. But the image I have in my head, which I realllllllyyyyy want to see happen, comes from the Daring Thief: "You're about to ultimate your Tamiyo, the Moon Sage? Sure...but in response, I cast Cerulean Wisps on my Daring Thief, it's untapped and inspired, and now I'll take your Tamiyo and give you...my Chandra Ablaze with one loyalty. Oh, look, your Tamiyo's ultimate has resolved...for me. Continue your turn, please. Why are you mad, bro? Aren't you running red in your deck?"

If they already activated the ultimate, you're too late, they still control the ability on the stack.

The idea is to target him in response to removal that gets played on him. It makes every combat trick a Ranger's Guile, more or less.

Turn and Burn (fused) would cost 2 less only if you target two separate creatures. Targeting the same creature with both halves would only reduce the cost by one.
Many thanks to DNC at Heroes of the Plane Studios
He said 2 Thaumaturges. So yes, the cost reduction would be 8.
