I really thought Ajani was going to die in this block until watching this trailer. Now im pretty certain Elspeth is going to perish. This trailer is really pushing that direction.
I hope the one who really perish is Heliod himself. Erebos resents Heliod the most.
Elspeth can be mortally injured, but then ascend to godhood and take Heliod's place.
That was a great trailer. Wizards have really stepped up their production values in Theros block, and this one features the most nuanced voice performance of any trailer yet. Loved it.
Isn't that Athreos speaking? Since I think his image is fading away in the ending of the trailer. He has a bit too "good" voice for Erebos.
You clearly see Erebos, God of the Dead in the end. Its him. He is also the ruler of the underworld.
Atheros is almost just a pawn of him from the looks of it.
Not for the first time, it's clearly Bant/Grixis in front of her.
Elpeth 's home plane was taken by phyrexians ( canon from comics and duel deck) and its clear that the hand that apears in front of her is from phyrexia ( not new or old)...
If you listen close, at one point the echoing voice in the background says something different. Just after Erebos says "True heros never die," the echoing voice says "Or do they?"
I have to say, I'll be shocked if Elspeth dies. Thing is, she can still fulfill the heroic "great struggle followed by death" tradition simply by planeswalking away. As far as the inhabitants of the world would be concerned, she'd be gone.
When Xenagos' spark ignited and he left Theros to explore the multiverse, Erebos (who is presented here as a sort of arbiter of inevitability) took notice because, with Xenagos now traveling to other planes, he could no longer dictate Xenagos' fate. When Xenagos returned to Theros, Erebos provided Xenagos with the knowledge of how to ascend to Godhood, knowing that Heliod would choose Elspeth, another planeswalker who had already been to Theros before, as his champion. Erebos' true plan is to force Elspeth to enter his domain so that he could collect "his prize," aka...

Elspeth's spark!
wouldn't it be easier to trade those knowledge for Xenagos's spark, in this case?
Very nice and very sad trailer. Strange I never thought about Elspeth dying there before; failing again and running - yes, but no dying.

Perhaps, but maybe there was no way to make both happen. Perhaps Erebos couldn't have taken the spark once Xenagos ascended to Godhood, while Xenagos going to where he'd need to be Erebos could take the spark would make it impossible for Xenagos to ascend.

Yes, they said that scene was a flashback during the panel.
I'm sort of thinking that she'll decide that Theros is better off without ANY gods. Full on Rage Against the Heavens.
I love Elspeth. This trailer gave me chills. I hope she doesn't die, she's awesome.

And Erebos was working for Nicol Bolas all along!
