Could be a house in monoblack CMDR, with a build around strategy for (un)tapping. Monoblack can throw up motherloads of mana, and I'm pretty sure Umbral Mantle is pretty mana intensive... /wink
I've seen some really nice Inspired decks that make use of Hidden Strings. Wouldn't be surprised if this card was what made those decks Standard playable. Also, dat Midas reference.

Auto-include in my Phenax EDH deck. Every turn, mill some and get a free exile to boot. Possibly more than one exile if I also have one of my many untap mechanisms out.
Wish it weren't a 'may' ability. Midas' story is tragic for a reason
Good card, though. Would be interested in seeing an EDH deck with this guy as the commander.
Yeah, I agree it would be a lot more flavorful without the 'may' clause, and maybe could have been printed more aggressive
As is, its basically completely dependent on an enabler and can't do anything on its own.
Remember, the same thing that makes its ability relevant- enemies having creatures you want to remove- is the same thing that makes a 2/3 vanilla beater unable to turn sideways and live to tell the tale. So its clearly a self defeating card in that regard, and necessarily a combo piece. And I dunno, whats the best aura or bestow or equipment for that? Slap a godsend on him for maximum redundancy?

Totally. Except then they'd need to add a clause about not including himself. (Because turning himself into gold would also subvert the flavor. The point is being alone.)

It isn't that hard. Just say "another target creature". Problem solved.

They should've done that anyway. Its not likely anyone would ever choose to suicide him (unless you need the mana) but flavor-wise its not good because Midas shouldn't be able to escape his curse so easily.
For what it's worth, the opposite of evergreen is "deciduous" so I suggest we start using that from now on to refer to shroud, banding, islandhome, etc.
Didn't think I'd see inspired in this set (I think Heroic would've worked better). What an interesting take on the story of King Midas. This'll find a home in my EDH deck... or I just might make a gold-themed deck in the future.

...But seriously I am in love with this design. The art and flavor are spot on. This set is NOT disappointing so far.
