I like it but do you think that the opponent will care, that the creature he/she just killed will return to the hand of his/her opponent? I mean 3 life is a lot so why not just let them?
Well, well, well, possibly the best god in the block.
Obviously this will impact standard, and I'm definitely brewing with this in modern.
I think Athreos would be pretty good in Death&Taxes where you can vial it eot and then attack the next turn with your guys. Also Melira pod, you can sac your wall of roots into this guy and then laugh at their removal. Obviously when you're not going to combo off
I was thinking a b/w midrange deck with tidehollow sculler, gatekeeper of malakir, dark confidant, lingering souls, Liliana, possibly top it off with phyrexian obliterator. Recurring scullers, bobs, and gatekeepers sounds really good.
I'm sure there's a sweet deck with blood artist and cartel aristocrat out there too. You could have teysa, orzhov scion as well. Athreos seems to work well with that, the only thing I would be concerned about is that there aren't any cards that do what blood artist does besides blood artist and kalastria highborn (but I'm not running a bunch of vamps).
I'm sure it doesn't do anything, but would angel of jubilation stop your opponent from being able to pay the life to not let you return creatures to your hand? So every creature would return to your hand with both her and athreos out. I'm pretty sure it doesn't work, since this isn't an activated ability, but I like getting confirmation on things like this.
If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring

Or a bunch of weenies. It's not unlikely that you'll have 3 or 4 creatures of 1 to 2 mana out along with him when your opponent manages to play a Wrath. Normally, that would be the blowout needed for your opponent to stabilize and take over the game. However, in this circumstance, it would come down to either giving you your army back, in which case it all drops again when the turn is passed, or paying 9-12 life, which they probably can't afford, given that they were probably already slapped around a bit.
And if they don't wrath, then you can just keep swinging and probably bring along an indestructible 5/4 for three mana. Even if they block and your creatures die, it's the same conundrum.
Global enchantments have always been slow unless the key to some form of infinite combo (Intruder Alarm) or so devastatingly unfair as to give the caster an insane advantage (Yawgmoth's Bargain/Necropotence). He certainly plays more towards aggressive and midrange strategies, as otherwise the life loss is generally irrelevant. Still, at that cost, tons of potential.
What do you guys think about this guy and Arcbound Ravager? With both and a memnite/ornitopther out, it's either unlimited +1+1 counters on ravager of 3 dmg per creature you sac.
It's not a bad idea, but I'll just kill your ravager in response to the sac and you can have all the ornithopters you want.
I don't think it does enough to make affinity, even slightly, less consistent.
What about hellspark elemental and company? with fastlands you could cast Athreos turn 3. What about your vexing devil? This card is sooo broken.
Holy god vexing devil would be ridiculous with this thing out.

Vexing Devils new BFF. Cast Vexing Devil, take 4 dmg and loose 3 life to keep it in the GY or keep creature in play and take 4dmg a turn if unblocked. With this thing out, aggro decks will never run out of gas ever again.
As for regarding killing Arcbound Ravager, you can just recast it if you don't pay the 3 life and restart the combo again. If you pay 3 life thats 3 less life for the affinity player to attack with.
#1 - What's the dumbest idea you ever had?
#2 - 15/15 for 15?
#1 - Make it dumber
#2 - Give it protection from removal and counter?
#1 - DUMBER!
#2 - Add Timewalk?
#1 - DAMN IT MAN, I SAID DUMB!! DUMB !!!
#2 - It destroys everything when it attacks.... And wait, I have a friend who plays mill decks... I want to beat him too.
#1 - Excellent! Recess is over, go back and learn sex-ed with the other 6th graders.
Initial Thoughts: Aggro or grindy
Mono-Black aggro seems like it wants this card, and +4 Godless Shrines and +2 Mana Confluences allows for Solider of the Pantheon or Loyal Pegasus, and maybe the Aforementioned Cartel Aristocrat, which is great synergy with all the new bestow creatures. Maybe looks something like this:
4 Tormented Hero
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Gnarled Scarhide
4 Pain Seer
4 Herald of Torment
3 Mogis's Marauder
3 Atheros, God of Passage
4 Hero's Downfall
4 Bile Blight
4 Thoughtseize
4 Godless Shrines
4 Temple of Silence
14 Swamp
Notable Exceptions: Mutavault Is very expensive, sitting at like 30-35 right now, and would not suggest buying into them, and no white cards (sans atheros) main board due to inconsistency. The side board is likely to have more white, but that is for another poast.
I'm not so sure about this with Vexing Devil. That's turn 4 for a 4/3 on the cheap. Probably pretty good. Worth fitting a BWR deck together for? Less certain about that. I suppose in a format where your mana base is incredible, as I am given to understand Modern is, you could make it work. It's not particularly painful, though, just eliminates the option to take 7 damage, since that's a bit ridiculous. Doesn't actually help the other option, a 4/3 for 1. Efficient, but can't be played on turns 1-3.
On a similar note, I'd probably try to play this with Serra Avenger for fun too
White/Black has long been my favorite color combo, because I love the weird things it can do, despite always having an overall underpowered card base and no great decks. I have been waiting for something like this to come along and turn my WB decks from "fun and flavorful" to "haha, I win."
While the shennagins with Vexing Devil are cute, it doesn't seem particularly realistic to happen. In the only deck that currently uses the devil in Modern (burn) playing a 3 drop that does so very little for the would be completely counter the goal of the deck. It'll be great in casual circles sure, but I highly doubt Devil and God will be anywhere near decent in Modern.
Wow, that is actually really cool. I'm very happy to see B/W not doing the whole "you lose life, I gain life" that it did in Ravnica so I'm more than happy with it.
I don't really understand this Angel of Serenity/Athreos hype I'm seeing here. Athreos is more of a boon for aggressive decks. Either reclaiming creatures or dealing damage are things that creature swarm decks love. Angel of Serenity doesn't play well with this playstyle, though. If Angel dies while Athreos is on the field, most players will take the life loss, no hassle. Playing an Angel deck means you're playing a slow deck. This means the damage race is almost never in your favor, so a free bolt to the face is low-impact. Also why would an opponent ever let you return a Devotion-boosting field-stalling flying beater back to your hand?
2 Sin Collector
3 Lifebane Zombie
2 Gift of Orzhova
2 Devour Flesh
2 Solider of the Pantheon
1 Rest in Peace
2 Gare of Heresy
1 Mana Confluence
Some Explanations:
Sin Colector is nuts versus a control deck, and with Atheros it is fairly easy to six-for-one them.
Lifebane Zombie is good versus other aggro decks, and is a must-play vs Monster builds.
The Gifts are for aggro and Naya Hexproof decks, letting you race them super easily.
Devour flesh is vs Blood Baron and Hexproff
Solider is for Naya Aggro and other such decks, giving you a unblockable 2-power due and life gain.
The one Rest in Peace is for G/B dredge and Jund Dredge, so you aren't completely blown out.
Glare is for D-Sphere decks, and can also do work vs white weenie.
The one Mana Confluence might seem weird, but you are bringing in a lot of white cards, and lots of them have higher mana costs. Putting in the extra land Will help.
Because the creature that died is Gray Merchant.
