I'm looking forward to David Sirlin's card. I'm sure he would want to translate the Street Fighter feel to Magic, but doing so in a single card sounds like a challenge. And I don't mean just printing a hadouken-chucking martial artist card, either.

So, I'm repeating myself from upthread, but, David Sirlin has actually commented previously on what sort of card he'd like to make; something like, "Secretly write down the name of a card, if your opponent plays that card you can reveal your choice to counter it". (Unsure whether it would be permanent or only work for a turn or so.) I'm guessing that would run into rules issues though. It's possible you could do something similar with exiling one of your cards face down and it has to match somehow. Maybe match the CMC, like Counterbalance? Actually matching the same card is obviously way too narrow. Or, of course, he might have just given up on that idea and gone with something totally different.
I am actually starting to like the font and frame changes.
I think the new font gives the card a sense of mystery and the reduction of the background texture helps better communicate the color of the card without adding more detail than necessary to the card. the art for the last five years has been so rich in detail that it gets muddled inside the small frame of a trading card.
The hydra is a well designed card and its a cool concept. a four legged seed that bursts open to reveal hydra heads, cool idea. it really didn't need the random spider sitting in the middle of the creature though, maybe just a burst of green magic in the center of the heads would have been less awkward.
art critique aside, I am excited to see the rest of the cycle, especially Notches' card.
just when this game gets me down it keeps getting me back up.

My biggest problem with the new frame is that the color doesn't surround the whole card.
That is all kinds of lame. Why let a bunch of random game devs (some half-baked) make cards?
Because they are more likely to push cards than Wizards. Besides, if they are all as cool as Genesis Hydra, none of us will have any reason to complain.
Why "nonland"? If you happen to whiff and only reveal land cards, you should be able to choose one of them. Choosing a land wouldn't make it overpowered.

Agreed, but it wouldn't make much of a difference.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

I'd imagine they still have to make it past R&D. I'm looking forward to seeing what Notch and Izzy (Cartwright) come up with, and I really hope Sirlin's card has something to do with knowing the mind of your opponent (Slaughter Games variant, maybe?)

Cards are game pieces, and should be treated as such, easily replaceable.
Cards are not money, investments, or a retirement fund, and should never have been treated as such.
Wizards made a mistake caving to speculators once, and we still pay for that mistake 2 decades later.
"Entitled:" the entire ad hominem fallacy condensed into a single word. It doesn't strengthen your argument to attack motivations, it just makes you look like you don't understand the argument.

As long as you are playing the Hydra in a fair (not comboish) way, not getting lands makes a huge difference. Roughly a third of the cards in your decks are lands, so you have a high chance of revealing them. If you cast the Hydra with a small X, you have a good chance to miss on a sufficiently cheap nonland permanent, whereas you are likely to reaveal at least one land.
As for the look of the card: I am fine with it if one or two dozen cards in this one core set mention the designer of the card. I think that is a nice gimmick. I am also fine with the foil stamp for rares and mythics to guarantee its authenticity. Two things that I do not like on the new cards are the capital letters of the new font and the color frame not extending to the bottom of the text box.
What's with all the hydra cards? This is starting to seem excessive.
they finally settled on hydra as green's iconic race for big, fatty rare and mythic creatures a couple years ago; and they have been trying to cement it over the past few sets. just like red has dragons, white has angels, and black has demons. green has lacked an iconic creature identity for most of magic's history up until recently. so get used to it. just like dragons, angels, and demons are ubiquitous; you'll probably be seeing them for the foreseeable future.
Has anyone else noticed this card is 176 of 269....
Granted we will have some basic lands taking up 20 spaces, but for green to have a numbered card under G at 176 means that roughly there are 40 cards in each colour, or 200 coloured cards....
We then move to multicoloured, artifacts and land filling in 49 spaces.... This seems alot in a core set...
Well, normal amount of cards is 249 (and 20 of that are basic lands), so perhaps the "extra designs" are actually extra 20 cards added on top of otherwise complete Core Set?
Um...does this really say "designed by..." as its flavor text? I noticed that on "Waste Note" too but thought it was just special for the community card design. Is this a thing now? Gah
They showed in the video that for m15, they got a LOT of people who like magic to create cards for this set. (My top lists are the guys who did minecraft, this card, and Gearbox). So, they're just doing it as a shoutout to the nonstandard mtg designers.

I fear I won't have much time to play Magic these days.
I get to watch worlds develop around me.
I get to watch great leaders, terrible oppressors, and trend setters rise and fall.
Limited, Standard, Modern, everything is a different playing field I feel I can observe, but will not actually touch.
I look forward to the stories I will hear.
And more so to the ones I will watch unfold first hand.
Isn't the unknown exciting?

Maybe they have finally realized that new players understand multicolored.

Exactly what I thought about the new frame. Glad I am not the only one lol.

I am very curious to see what Sirlin's card turns out to be. I predict a Magic appropriation of a shoryuken.

Casting a creature so far behind the curve is not fine.
