I just realized the joke in the title of the black board wipe "Extingush All Hopes" Of Ever Getting A Damnation Reprint.
Seriously though it doesn't have to be a straight Damnation reprint, but please print a 4CC black board wipe. Stupid Supreme Verdict messed with the entire design of control for the past 2 years.
Can't wait to put hall of triumph in my Prossh EDH. I was really hoping to get a peek at a god tonight but oh well, I shall wait until midnight tomorrow, then the next day....and the next. Such lack of sleep on spoiler season
Here it is folks. I'm super excited for this set. I am so happy Monstrosity is back. I won't be missing the Born of the Gods mechanics. Constellation looks very fun, particularly because it triggers off of the card itself.
As for the individual cards:
Hall of Triumph is slam dunk standard playable. Mono Blue LOVES this card. You play this card, Master of Waves tokens will refuse to go away. Absolutely incredible.
Gnarled Scarhide is also standard playable. That's our second two power one drop in black for this block, third in all of standard. The bestow option is especially cool, you can put it on your creature for an Unholy Strength, or you can put it on an opponent's creature to prevent blocking.
Dakra Mystic is another solid option for monoblue decks. I think the current choices are better, but time will tell.
Eidolon of Blossoms is extremely interesting, and potentially extremely powerful. The fact that it cantrips makes the card great. Who knows with this card, but if you try to brew with this card, you have my blessing.
Overall, I'm excited. My only reservation is that the mechanics page implied that devotion only appears on the gods in this set... Which would be disappointing.
I'm not surprised by All Hope's cost being higher than standard White Boardwipes. Because boardwiping like that isn't a thing Black normally does for balance reasons. So having it cost more mana makes sense, especially since Black has so many easy access no question killspells of the targetted sort, it doesn't need that much help.
From a design POV, I really like Extinguish All Hope. By playing up black's trouble in dealing with enchantments, they created a truly black board wipe that doesn't just feel like a timeshifted Wrath. It's also an immediate EDH staple.
But yeah, in any competitive format, it's awful.
The constellation stuff is going to have to get leagues better than Eidolon of Blossoms if it's going to have tournament impact.
The Minotaur 1-drop just confirms how much less exciting aggro is going to be once RtR block rotates. That's not a card I want to play.
I cant imagine a narrow wrath effect being an EDH staple. There are better options available.
I have a player at my store that built a pillow fort, enchantment heavy, Oloro EDH that is going to love Extinguish All Hope. I can see it working perfectly in something like that. In standard play, I can't see it exactly being used atm but who knows...I have only known about it for 52 minutes

He was playing enchantment creatures? Not many of them seem good enough for EDH.
Total side note but I like how people are discussing running this over itself.
Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5
why is blue getting all the love on first night? i mean common i wanted something good in blue for modern....you know something like serum visions id like to hope blue will get something bether than that but i know blue will be forgotten again...

What's up with people knocking Ajani's Presence? As far as commons go, this will be crazy good in limited!
Because the exceedingly and repeatedly heavy emphasis that WotC puts on Limited for every set now means less cards that are worth the cardboard they were printed on in the long term? How many Mortal's Resolve or Ajani's Presence will you want to own in your collection two months from now?
It's not that Limited doesn't have a place. It just shouldn't be the main format every set is built around. As much as I like drafting, I wouldn't mind a multikicker card besides Everflowing Chalice and Marshal's Anthem to make it into one of my Commander decks.

He doesn't have very many at all but this may change that

Only if the enchantment creatures are actually playable.
I love what we've seen so far. I think it was great from WOTC to keep the enchantment matters cards for the last block. I was actually worried they forgot what are real enchantments. Hopefully we see noncreature ones soon. I'm glad scry, monstrosity and heroic are back. Constellation is so cute and flavorful. The strive mechanic sucks though.
Great spoilers all around though. Hall of Triumph will definitely see play. I'm glad the black sweeper is overcosted as black is already doing amazing anyway.

Honestly, give me a valid reason for WotC *not* to focus on limited. Its the format that flat-out earns them the most money, and will probably always have one of the largest numbers of players due to the functionally nonexistent barrier to entry. If you want every Random Common #4 to be playable in a format, the power creep will get painful very quickly.

Rest in RIP My Signature, I guess. 2015-2016, we hardly knew ye.

Gnarled Scarhide seems pretty alright, but I've also got a full set of Ragemongers that I've been eager to put to some actual use. The fact that I can eventually drop it for 0 is pretty cool, even if it's no great shakes.

Modern Deck:

Except it doesn't power devotion at all...

[THS|SOM|5TH] Devotion to Black
Edit: The minotaur bestow one drop will see constructed play.
I cant imagine a narrow wrath effect being an EDH staple. There are better options available.
The ONLY format the card sees play in is Casual, and only in Enchantment-heavy decks, methinks.
- Main Cube
- No Brains, All Feelings Cube
I do hope that Eidolon of Blossoms is a cycle though, to finally make me care about enchantment creatures being enchantments.
Strive is confusing. I guess they didn't want replicate for some reason.
I love the Merfolk. Cursecatcher replacement? Merfolk is a cantrip deck already so why not?
He was playing enchantment creatures? Not many of them seem good enough for EDH.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
