I am buying cards from a guy and I have a total of 29 cards picked for almost 30$, and my friend who is interested in 3 cards, has them cost him 38$... both trades are for casual EDH decks. I really hate the inflation of manabase costs as it keeps me away from modern and in some way from 3+ colored EDH decks that absolutly need those manabases to function.
As a casual player, I was completely horrified by the price of the modern fetchlands.
I bought and sold some at 7€ each 2 years ago, and now it raised...40/50€ !
I do not blame competitive play, and the correlated values of high powered cards ; plus, mana base has always represented the most expensive budget.
BUT : how can you justify a 50€ price on a (yet beautiful) piece of cardboard ? This is insane. I do not want to start a fire with my talk ; just share my thoughts.
What do you think ?
Typical response from other side. "Magic is an expensive hobby. Newer players have to wait their turn. Everyone wants cheap prices right now, it just doesn't happen that way. Magic is an investment. Stop complaining. Build a budget deck. Trade smart. Be good at speculating what cards are good."
All right, all of that aside, I agree. The prices of pieces of cardboard is insane.
Regardless of the price and contents, I am excited for this deck. I would love to see more people getting into modern. I think it is a great format in both the competitive and casual scene. I know it has picked up at my store and players are slowly expanding their budget decks into better and more competitive decks. This deck will give players who are thinking about getting into the format a quicker, easier way to do it and that is what I am excited for. The Magic community grows as a whole when more players can access more formats.
I keep coming into this thread when I see that it's been bumped by people talking in it. I always get my hopes up that actual information has been spoiled but it's always people bickering about something or other. Can you guys just argue using PMs or something so that everyone doesn't keep coming in here hoping for new news just to be met by your arguments.

Agreed. While I am skeptical about the deck's actual contents, and more so about its MSRP, I am very, very glad to see Wizards promoting the format. I'd like to see them do a Modern event deck every year, maybe with a high enough printing to discourage shops from jacking up the MSRP. I'd also love a Modern Game Day with full art Modern cards and a Modern artwork playmat, but the event deck is a great start. Now we just need to see what the contents are! Ha!

I agree. I'm also hoping for a yearly modern event deck. A Modern Game Day would be great. Maybe they can do that for the next Modern Masters set.
WOTC should release a modern event deck every other year, and in those years, they should release a multiplayer supplement that you draft with, like Conspiracy.
In the years when they don't release event decks, they should release modern masters, and also release a multiplayer supplement that comes in precons, like Planechase and Archenemy.
This means that one year, there will be a booster based multiplayer supplement, and a precon based modern product, and in the year after that, it will be a precon based multiplayer supplement, and a booster based modern product, and this will alternate.

Well this sure isn't good news. And sure enough, the only European online store that lists them is already sold out. There goes my chance of getting into modern I suppose, 8 decks per store is abysmally low.

No, Commander sets are released November of every year. This is June we are talking about, you know, the month when non-commander multiplayer supplements are released? What I was suggesting was that WOTC should alternate between a booster based and a precon based multiplayer supplement in June that isn't Commander, and when there is a booster based multiplayer supplement, there should be a modern format precon product, and if there is a precon based multiplayer supplement, there should be a booster based modern product released in the same month.
Why is this 75$? Elspeth can be had for 15$. The rest of the cards mentioned are 2 - 3$. Is this an all foil premium product? FTV MSRP is ~40$ (giving you foil versions of cards whose only other foil versions are well over 100$ - Jace, sol ring, Maze of Ith) and other event decks are ~25$. Even commander's arsenal was ~70$ MSRP. The commander decks give you 100 cards with some brand new cards never printed before for MSRP ~40$. What on earth could justify this price? 75$ is half the MSRP of a booster box!
Now I'm going to contrast these above examples to the known information: BW tokens is easy to make and relatively cheap. How does this 75$ product help new players get into the format when they could probably assemble it themselves for a similar price? There are 21 pages in this thread - somone help me out here. Who is going to pay 75$ for 1-2 elspeth, a few Hero of bladehold, and lingering souls (and friends) when you could spend the same money at an online retailer and get it yourself. Even with a few shock lands, it seems unlikey to hold enough value in it. Maybe they came up with the MSRP using TCGplayer prices low... he, he, he...
Well if wizards follows the suite of previous event decks it will contain Marsh Flats, Godless Shrine, and Fetid Heath. Which combined value is right around $60. Don't forget that this deck comes with sleeves and a box. I understand ALMOST NO ONE cares about the box or sleeves but Wizards probably put that at around $20 worth of value.

Would Dark Confidant still be good if he punched you in the face for 5 damage a turn?
I'm amazed that WOTC wasn't able to print the exact amount of product needed to meet the exact demand of a first time product, all the while continuing to print Theros block, and starting to print Conspiracy and M15 at the same time. Amazing they couldn't pull that off.
Seriously people, if stores are only getting 8 to start, and they sell out, WOTC will print more, and stores can order more, and keep selling out until demand is met. They couldn't print to meet the immediate demand. It's actually impossible.
Wizards shouldn't take into consideration the value of cards on the secondary market if they want to provide a competitive deck for people. They should just take a deck form the last top 8 and print one out lol.
In fact they should print out all the top 8 decks and price it at $100. I'd but each.

This. 100 times this. So many people does not understand that. A card that is $50 on TCGmid does not automatically mean it's worth $50.
Wizards doesn't make money off the end user, they make money off LGS, which make money off us, the customer. If they did something like this, SCG, Channelfireball, and all the other big stores would have a total ******* ***** fit over the money the would loose. Only way wizards could prevent would be giving them insider information, that is currently illegal in the U.S. The big stores like SCG, Channelfireball, and TCGPlayer that do all the big tournaments aside from the PT and GPs are the people that drive magic sales the most. They do tons of marketing to sell someone else's product, and turn a profit from it.

Ah, I misunderstood your suggestion. In the years that we have been posting on the same boards you know how incredibly wacky I think Signofzeta suggestions are, so I probably read into it. On a related note, do you collect event decks now? I thought you only collected like certain colors of each theme/set precon.

Nah, I'm going all in. All precon, every precon, but that's seems to be impossible with the modern event deck.
I do have a hierarchy as to which precons I must buy first.
"Blue" and "Red" intro packs are the most important to me, and must purchase close to the day of release. I will throw a fit if I don't get them at day or close to day of release. Will be willing to overpay for them. If there are defects, I will try to correct the defect, such as I will buy the single of the missing card.
"White", "Black" and "Green" intro packs are next most important, and can be purchased a few days after. Not going to overpay for these. I will also try to correct the defect if there is one.
Standard Event Decks aren't as important to me, and can be purchased a week or two after. Not as important though, and will not overpay. Not in a rush to correct any defects. I might just go with the flow and ignore any defects and leave it be.
Duel Decks, Commander Decks, Multiplayer Supplement precons aren't as important and I can buy them a month or two after release, and if they aren't in stock, I have the patience to buy them later. Any defects in the product I can ignore.
I will, however buy a precon right away if I know for a fact that if I don't buy it now, I won't get a chance later.

I'm sorry but how is that illegal? The only place where insider trading is illegal in the united states to the best of my knowledge is the stock market, and despite the way some treat it magic cards are not the stock market. Also, the stores make far more money off standard than they do modern.
Actually, the majority of my store's singles sales recently have been Modern cards, and even the booster packs are being bought with Modern in mind. That's where the money is.
My store ordered 24 decks and we're getting all of them, to the best of my knowledge. So maybe the allocation issue is European only.
I think the confusion here is that there are a certain number of decks that shops get directly from Wizards, but the vast majority of product is generally received through distributors. So, while it might be perfectly true that shops will not get more than 8 decks from wizards direct, they will also be able to get them through other traditional avenues.
Here in Europe a shop can only buy from a distributor, Wizards only delivers the 6(?) european distributors, no direct sale to shops, therefore it is for sure that we only get 8 decks (Maximum) - EXCEPT there will be a second print run (but I don`t think so)...
Wait. Is that 8 "initial shipment" or 8 total. There is a world of difference. JvVs keep getting resupplied. This dck could be the same

While the LGS I go to does sell many boosters that are Modern minded, like Future sight, considering the cost of those boxes now the profit margins aren't that great.
