While not as big as GenCon, we have a convention called 'Origins' in Ohio - so my first thought on Magic Origins was that they were taking it over, being that it seems MTG is the biggest thing at the convention after all.
Seems unlikely. It would be much more likely to be product oriented.

I'll grant that it's an interesting idea. I missed the information that the additional 20 M15 cards were confirmed to be uncommons to "help" limited.
I don't play much limited, so forgive me if this sounds stupid, but how does increasing the number of uncommons in a set help limited? Wouldn't you need to increase the number of uncommons per pack to make them easier to draft more? Otherwise I just see them watering down the uncommon pool and making it a lot less likely to get uncommons you're hoping to get for the deck you're currently drafting?

~A golden helix streaked skyward from the Helvault. A thunderous explosion shattered the silver monolith and Avacyn emerged, free from her prison at last.~

I think it is to cause more variety in limited, because the uncommons will occur less frequently. Of course this will have the effect of requiring more packs opened somewhere for people to get the uncommons they want, which means more pack sales. But putting it under the guise of helping limited is better marketing than "this will increase pack sales".

I just played (and lost) against someone who had 3 Ornitharch in a BNG-THS-THS draft. I am now 100% in favour of more varied uncommons.
Also, Maro has mentioned that uncommon has always been the tightest rarity, where many cards they design feel like they should be uncommon but need to have their rarity switched due to the lack of space. I'm fairly certain cards like Chained to the Rocks, Mindreaver and even the scrylands could have all been uncommon with this new model.

I won two Modern Masters drafts by having multiple Eternal Witnesses-
One of my opponents almost cried after burning the second Witness only to see it revived by a third (and then revive the first)
I kind of like such wackiness, but I realize I'm in the minority.

And let the baseless speculation about the end of the reserved list begin =P
Wow this was actually exactly what I was thinking when I first saw this. You would expect, with a title such as Magic Origins, it would be about something related to the early days of Magic.
And thanks to its bumped rarity, "better" guildgates such as Temple of Enlightenment costs $10 and above, 20 times more expensive than the one we regularly use as coasters when opening RTR packs.
Should a card tagged with a simple mechanic cost that much more? I'm not so sure.
I would hope the extra uncommons would be for stuff like Hero's Downfall or Thoughtseize that would fine at Uncommon. Good removal should be at uncommon for limited. You want players to have cards to it, but not too much access.
Back to the OP, I wouldn't bet on this being related to the reserved list; a videoge me (possibly as a tie-in with the movie?) or a book/graphic novel seems more likely. Having said that, it is a bit odd that they filed in Australia but not the US. There's maybe a 5% chance this could be a way to circulate reprints and build the popularity of eternal formats in countries that missed out on sets from 15+ years ago.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
If they abolished the Reserved List that would be stupendous but I do doubt that. Though new cards and possibly a new format as well are always welcome.
If the movie is being filmed in Australia, which is a possibility, would they have to apply for the trademark there first before the US? I really don't know how that works, but if so, that might be the answer to your question.
When did we find the Conspiracy trademark? Was it this time last year? It's possible this is the Summer 2015 supplemental set, although I'm guessing that's going to be a boxed product a la Planechase 3, since we'll have had two years in a row of Summer booster products. My guess is that this will be some sort of DotP-esque video game or maybe a book.

That's a possibility. I, too, am unsure exactly how that all works.

it varies by country but usually they have to apply separately per country. sometimes a name is already taken in one country but not the other that usually is why things are named differently for movies and games if you are in say Usa vs japan.
Yeah its almost certainly the movie. All card products must be TM'd " Magic the gathering". With only the word magic in the TM its a non card product.
Fox studios is in Sydney.
I think(will find out) who does the trademark work for Fox in Aus. Its probably this firm.
I don't know, I think it might be something less "sexy", and is more just a catchall name for paper and ebook rereleases of the Magic the Gathering books.

Also, they've come out and said the extra 20 cards are Uncommons to help limited,
and that most (all?) future sets would do the same.

The scrylands, like most marquee duals, are rare purely to sell packs. MaRo's lands podcast directly admitted this.
Yea we knew that. Blatant Thievery on Wizards part.
