i dont think its "worse" than anything, i think its just bad in general. only getting one pack of cards from a set at prerelease event for that set has always been disappointing, and the seeded packs need to be mono colored or more heavily weighted to the chosen color if they're gonna keep doing that. its a terrible feeling when you cant play your chosen color at the event, it would be better off feels wise if it was just another booster. i miss tournament packs. i think the prerelease kits should have something like a 40 or 50 card randomized "tournament pack" of cards from the large set and 3 boosters of the new set. that is similar to how my old lgs ran it back in the day (tournament pack + 1 new booster) but would highlight the new cards more.
I agree.
I understand that the regular limited format would be 2-2-2, but the pre-release sort of feels like a special case. It's mostly to play with some of the new cards a week early, so it would be nice to actually GET a fair amount of the new cards. It's a more casual event anyway, so who cares if 1-1-4 (with 4 of the new set) is suboptimal, it would be great to get a few extra new packs!
totally, the prerelease should be different from a regular sealed event, otherwise what really makes it special aside from some gimmicks, however cool/fun/cute/whatever those gimmicks may be i dont think they're worth it. most lgs' im familiar with do 6 packs for $20, a draft is $10, and a prerelease is $25. what is the extra $5 for the same amount of packs for if not to have access to the new cards early? when you only get one pack of the new cards it feels like staying up til one am to buy a $9 dollar booster
Just for those denying the image, it IS a real picture. You fight Xenagos. This is completely confirmed at this point.
EDIT: The prerelease pack will contain 2x Theros, 2x Born of the Gods, 1x Journey into Nyx and 1x Seeded pack. Just thought I'd say that for people who might think otherwise.
I do not doubt you, but this is weird. Third small set prereleases were always 3-3, omitting the middle set.

Dragon's Maze was a Seeded RtR pack, a Seeded Gatecrash pack, and four Dragon's Maze packs. Besides, between RtR block being structured as it was and Avacyn Restored being standalone we don't have very recent data on how third sets are supposed to be played in sealed. It seems reasonable to me that they want to include the entire block.

Okay, let me rephrase: every normal-structured block third small set prerelease. The most recent one was New Phyrexia, being 3 NPH-3 SOM packs.
But as you say, the last normal-structured block was three years ago. God knows how they want it to be played. But it used to be the special sealed format for 3rd set prereleases, the whole block normal sealed was always 2-2-2.
I'd prefer 3 THS, 3 JOU packs.

Indeed.

Is price primarily moved by Prerelease pools? That seems unlikely to me, as soon as the set is released there will be an influx of regular packs which should bring prices to standard level. Just don't buy chase mythics for prerelease prices.

pre-release pools do somewhat effect/drive presale price in the week leading up to release, but not by much. the main thing that will drive up prices on this set is the amount of packs cracked. small sets are notorious for not getting opened enough, and when you only get 1 pack at the prerelease it makes the scarcity problem worse simply because less packs are being opened overall. add to that the arguably poor reception and weak power level of theros block and you have a set that is basically destined for DGM territory; 1 overpriced mythic, maybe 1 rare for $10 or $15 and everything else bulk
I think that it would be kind of cool if Iroas is killed in some battle between him, Ajani, Elspeth, etc etc against the forces of Pharika and Phenax, and then Ajani once again is aligned to WR instead of just W.
Here's a link to the most recent Large-small-small structure.
Honestly there is zero reason to believe it will be 2-2-1-1. I would put money on 3-2-1 (THS, JIN, seeded)

It is CONFIRMED that they are doing 2:2:1:1. There is no question to that.

"Most recent" loses some impact when it's three years ago. I'm sure there'll be an article explaining how they changed their views on prerelease pools and so forth.

Well, 2-2-1-1 as implied in the thread of 2 THS-2 BNG-1 JIN-1 seeded is wrong per:
Wizards should do away with those seeded boosters already... New sets... We should be given new packs! Plus, seeded booster and promo rares skew the way one plays a limted game.
It's 2 Theros, 1 BNG, 2 JOU and 1 seeded pack. Look at the last page under the product descriptions.
I'm much happier about this than what I was hearing. One JOU pack would have been really lame. Now my question is this; do the seeded packs only come with cards from that set? So in example this seeded pack will only contain JOU cards? Or will it contain cards from each set of the Theros block but be only the color of your choice?
Personally I get excited see the five prerelease cards because it helps me edge in my decision about which color to play. Although I do feel like the choices always have a weak link. They're not exactly amazing cards, but some of them are fairly good and others are fairly weak.
The cards in the seeded pack contain only cards from that set, with a bias towards the chosen color(ie rare, at least one uncommon, and at least a couple commons are that color). At least, that's how it was with BNG and THS, so reason stands to believe it'll stay the same here.

I doubt they will, MaRo's blog has made it sound like Wizards views the seeded packs as a strong success.
