I know punisher effects are worse than the generally weaker side, but that doesn't mean they have 0 value. This guy is worse than a 5/5 haste trample, and worse than an 8/8 trample, but he's strictly better than a 5/5 trample.
Ah derp you're right I misread it, thought it was gaining the trample. Yeah, that puts it as a 5/5 haste trample with a drawback. Thats a brainfart for ye
I don't expect Modern players to be enthusiastic about the set.
As a player of all formats of Magic, I think the set looks like a lot of fun to play and that the mechanics align with the set's flavor pretty well. As a standalone block, this is all pretty sweet. It's fun building up heroes through triggers, slaying giant mythical beasts, and building up devotions for gods. I think it's also neat that they have released more ways to remove gods from play with this set, which also aligns with historical flavor.
There's a lot of fun interactions in the set that haven't been explored and I think a lot of the criticisms are a little unwarranted. I am greatly looking forward of Pro Tour coverage to see what the professionals, who are typically a little more robotic with their card/set evaluations, come up with. Professional players find themselves drooling over cards like Nessian Asp or Wingsteed Rider in a draft scenario, which were bashed when Theros previews were revealed.
So far, this block has had an abundance of very playable cards, making drafts very interesting. With all the great uncommons in this set, I think drafts will be even more fun to watch.
Oh, I thought he was talking about playing a spell that is countering a spell with counters on it as it comes into play, but I see you guys were just discussing whether he was flashing a creature with flash in order to flash a flashback or just flashing a creature with flash but not needing flash in order to flashback a spell without flash.

Well, I'm going to go against the negativity bandwagon here.
I think this set looks like a lot of fun. There's a lot of synergies embedded in these cards and while a majority of these cards aren't going to be breaking any formats, I think Standard got some nice goodies, Commander got some cool cards and I'm pretty confident in saying that Modern and Legacy might have gotten a bone thrown at them as well.
That said, I really think Limited is the big winner here. I think these cards are really going to diversify Theros draft and that they're really going to force us to re-evaluate the format, which I think is necessary. I've felt that Theros itself felt incomplete and I think adding Born of the Gods to the puzzle will really make it shine (unlike how DKA made INN feel more cluttered instead of adding to the enjoyment).
Lastly, the best card name with associated card art is Setessan Starbreaker. Not a great card, but that name and art is freakin' baller.
Sorry to go against the grain here boys... but I really like this set so far.
It may have been replaced by Kiora's Follower? Since Ug is the missing combo.

that's not what happened at all. kamahl stabbed phage, akroma, and some old lady and they became korona. then korona got stabbed by her "prophets" and kamahl got drunk with a mutant centaur
I'm sorry but for all the lack of "good stuff" this set has brought, I am, for the first time since starting Magic, EXTREMELY interested in getting foils of a great number of these cards.
While there's some really cool flavor and art to the set it seems very underpowered. Not only do there only seem to be a couple of really powerful mythics / rares, the commons and uncommons are mostly just bad.
I can't believe all the Tribute cards seem so terrible.
I don't think so at all. It's a 5/5 haste/trample for 6 - 99% of the time, and the one time you need it to be, it'll be an 8/8 trampler instead.
Limited it's kind of insane. You'd probably get it as a 8/8 so that they get a chance to deal with it, sure it dies to Asphyxiate and Eye Gouge but those are the only two cheap ways of dealing with it, and if it has haste Asphyxiate doesn't even work.
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
Still, that's that over with... When do Warlords spoilers start??
Definitely a lot here to up the power of existing standard decks but don't see many new archetypes springing from this set. Overall I think the uncommons are the best here and giving the extra 20 cards has created at of room to breath at that level.
As a Formatless Casual Multiplayer Heretic it's hard to educate a set without comparing it to all the resources in my shoeboxes but there's definitely enough core cards in here to replace the hearts of my long-standing decks and I think a good few of these cards (especially the removal) will be around for a long time.
The fact that no one (on this thread at time of typing) has given any heed to Hero of Leina Tower or Satyr Firedancer disheartens me greatly. Both cards are freaking insane, and very much Modern playable.
For what it's worth, the opposite of evergreen is "deciduous" so I suggest we start using that from now on to refer to shroud, banding, islandhome, etc.

-regarding Snapcaster Mage.
Maybe it has to do with Kiora's Follower being the only enemy-colored Uncommon in the set?
Maybe the U with G activation will be in JOU?

There's a bunch of sneaky Modern cards but most are enchantments so obviously hexproof benefits the most.
Great set. Keep it rolling WotC!

That would make sense.
Possibly. I would prefer that they do include one, even if it is delayed by a set.
I figured it'd have been brought up. That's what I get for not reading through to the end.

I'm disappointed that it's 5cmc compared to the 2 that the rest of the cycle is, but it's pretty strong so I understand.

I think it will be loads of fun to play in limited formats.
And Noble Quarry... I wonder if every set this block will get a unicorn? (Theros has Opaline Unicorn.)
