This is a possible SB card of MRD vs. match ups that play very light on removal (R/G, G/W, etc) in place of madcap skills. Madcap gives the veasion but this thing bost, in that particular deck, is much more massive.
My janky EDH plan for this card; might (read: probably won't) work in modern too:
1: Cast this on Foundry Street Denizen.
2: Activate Goblin Tunneler targeting Denizen.
3: Activate Krenko, Mob Boss, (preferably with more than just three goblins out).
4: Swing for BIG, can't-be-blocked damage. (8+ to the face)
If its a cycle, I wonder what the white and black one will be.
White would be something like gain 2x life equal to your devotion.
But black the only thing I can think of is target creature gets -x/-x equals to your devotion until e.o.t.
But if the latter is the case, that will mean black will have 4 -x/-x spells in 1 set.
3 removal spells at common/uncommon is already pushing it, but 4 in such a small set??

The Internet was a revelation to me, I never imagined there are so many idiots on this planet.
That's a question is it part of the same cycle as thassa's rebuff and windstorm? or is it different because it's an aura and these are spells. I guess we'll find out tonight
This seems... Really really bad, to me. Lots of comments giving it more credit than I expected. I think in most cases you'd just prefer straight damage over this, meaning lightning strike and searing blood.
Fair enough in limited, of course.
I don't think they could fairly price "Instant: CARDNAME deals X damage to target creature or player, where X is your devotion to red" at any reasonable cost that would see constructed play, so this is the best we're going to get.

Presumably this is part of the uncommons cycle:
White - Acolyte's Reward (Damage redirection)
Blue - Thassa's Rebuff (Counterspell)
Black - Unknown
Red - Thunderous Might
Green - Aspect of the Hydra (Giant Growth variant)
The black card is still unknown, although there is a Common black creature which cares about devotion to black. That is probably not the 5th card, seeing as the others are all uncommon and none are creatures.

If you're looking for just "target player," there's the four-mana Fanatic of Mogis which also adds a 4/2 creature and +1 devotion, though it's sorcery-speed. I don't think anything like that hits a creature, but the two-mana Mizzium Mortars hits for 4, the new four-mana "Fated Conflagration" hits for 5, and the old six-mana Into the Maw of Hell hits for 13. With hitting creatures, once you pass six damage or so, it's basically just a Murder.
The spell you're proposing would be pretty variable much in the way that Fanatic is. A fair price for it might be 3RR if they didn't want it to be playable, less if they wanted to push it. I agree that we won't see it.
Anyway, Fanatic is much better than this Thunderous Might card. Fanatic is four mana, but you don't want to play this effect early on anyway; you want to wait until you have a board presence. And if you don't have a board presence, at least Fanatic does something.

aspect is common and costs G, the others in this cycle are uncommons that cost 1C, the green entry into this cycle would be Skyreaping (damage to all flyers = to devotion to green)

No we're not... the black one is Marshmist Titan, the mana reducing one.
Edit: Oops, I'm dumb, they said two drops. It may be a coincidence that the others are 2 mana.
Cycles where all but one has some property are very rare - I think there was some article by Rosewater saying that they do not do them ever. In this case we got 4 1C uncommens with one effect which depends on devotion. Chances are that there will be a black one too. Also note that titan is common. A guess on the effect would be -X/-X to target creature (it could also be lose life or return creatures from gy to hand but either sounds quite strong).

I doubt this will do much now, but it might be more useful when Madcap Skills is out of Standard. Depending on how things shape up next year, this might be a go-to card for rushing beatdown. Right now, though, it's just not good enough compared to Madcap. The main problem with this is not that it requires devotion (that's actually good, since it scales better than Madcap Skills), but rather that MS provides evasion through the 'can't be blocked' phrase, while this does not. Long story short, maybe this will be more useful next year, but unless we see something that's really good with this and really bad with MS, either in the rest of BNG or in JOU, I can't see this making any waves in Standard until next year.
Now, for limited, this is much better. This is probably very playable in limited, because you can put it on an evasive creature (such as the Icarus expy) and get through for a lot of damage quickly.
If its a cycle, I wonder what the white and black one will be.

We already got the white one, it's the one that prevents damage. Black one might be a life drain effect.
Maybe 1B Instant that reads "Destroy target creature with CMC less or equal to your devotion to black."
The last thing black needs is more efficient removal, but I can envision worse things for it to be. Personally, I'm terrified that it will be "Target creature gets -X/-X until end of turn, where X is your devotion to black." I hope Wizards can see that would be way too powerful at 1B, even at sorcery speed, but we'll see.
Maro mentioned on his blog that originally this card was a creature with this ability. I would have rather seen this, because this card looks like too much card disadvantage.
Because 90% of players like to play T2-3 decks at FNM, which is fine, but don't think for a moment they are competitive.
The cycle continues with every set, competitive players denouncing cards, casual players praising cards and then the two sides arguing about it.
This card will most likely not see competitive play, Madcap Skills sees play more for its "Has to be blocked by two creatures" clause then for its attack buff, the buff makes it a competitive card.
I like this card well enough. If standard shifts how much removal it uses it does make for a good Gotcha, though i think the green devotion pump is likely much better in the long run.
