For what it's worth, the opposite of evergreen is "deciduous" so I suggest we start using that from now on to refer to shroud, banding, islandhome, etc.
Uh, it is good. Very good, in fact. Infest would have been a sweet card on it's own, and the Scrylands should have demonstrated just how useful Scry 1 is on an already good card.
Good enough for people to run them for Scry while having little to no uses for the second colour of mana they produce, yes.
Technically you run Temple of Deceit on the off chance you need Blue mana to cast cards stolen by Nightveil Spectre as well, but let's be honest; you want the Scry, and accept the fact that your curve might be a bit distorted in the process. I am certain tagging 'scry 1' on to what would have been an already playable spell is just a gravy bonus.
With new improved Infest that kills both fast red decks and white weenies, mono black has even less weaknesses now. Also, being uncommon, you'd have to watch out for it in limited as well - think twice before playing your 2x Vapor Kins now.

I am not a Standard player. I was hoping for instant speed, scry 2,-3/-3, you gain 2 life, or something similar. The scry lands have shown that adding scry 1 to a mediocre card does not make it good in Modern, which is the main format that I play.
Given the dominince of mono-black, do we really want them to have a better sweeper than this? It is great in a lot of instances against any aggro, some mid range and mo,o-blue. If it was better standard would simply be mono mono-black.
20% of the set, and the closest things that we have to Modern-playable cards are slightly-better Infest and Kiora's Follower, which is at best a 1 of in a Tier 1.5 deck. Nothing creates new decks. I am worried that this is going to be Dragon's Maze all over again for Modern (I'm a pessimist).
Yes, we know. Standard and Limited are the #1 priority for Wizards, then come the rest of the formats. I thought we knew this by now.

I suppose as a Modern player you appreciate the fact that your format's power threshold is so high that you are not likely to get more than a handful (like, maybe half a dozen) playable cards in a single set, right?
Kind of hard to complain when you pigeon hole yourself like that.
Now they don't even need to splash Golgari Charm to wipe weenies. No need for Pharika's Cure now you can just kill 'em all.
I like the Ephara's Enlightenment. Repeatable +1/+1 counters and being able to move the enchantment after combat to avoid sorcery speed removal is nice.
The UW aura is hilarious with Geist of St Traft. Pumps and evades, and returns the enchantment on the Angel trigger if the opponent can't beat Geist in combat.

I'm always looking for foil Madcap Skills and Ghitu Fire-Eater, [trade thread link forthcoming]

I'd be fine with half a dozen from a small set. Dark Ascension did that. But Dragon's Maze didn't and this probably won't either.
...Instead, I got an uncommon aura. Sad Bobo is sad.
But to be fair though, I was really happy when I read reanimator lord. Flavorful, and sooooo good in commander.
...Then, I realized he isn't legendary. Saddest Bobo is saddest.

Drown in Sorrows is INSANE.
It might just see play in every format, but it's definitely going to have an impact in standard. Who knows, it might even keep monoblue in check.
(note that every color except green and monoblue have a wrath/pyroclasm effect now.)
And the enchantment looks interesting. Heroic would be cool as a standard playable mechanic/archetype.
i like how you said "pay 2W" and "free" literally an inch apart on my monitor

From a "stoked as hell about rad powerful cards!" perspective, this is a sad lot, save Drown In Sorrow. Here's hoping we see some bombs soon.

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.

Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Avacyn Restored, Dark Ascension, and Innistrad all gave Modern a lot. I don't see why the Theros block isn't.

Never seen "and/but" before. Good on you. We will see a couple more good mythics before the end, but 60% of them will always be casual jank.

I honestly expect a little more oomf from smaller sets. The uncommons are at least pretty good.
