Legendary you say? So it can be used as a commander right? Except for the fact that when your commander would be killed it goes back to the command zone, not the graveyard, so making it the commander effectively blanks the second ability...
An interesting card in some edh decks I have no doubt, but custom made for EDH? Please, if you actually played the format you'd know better. You are a self identified modern exclusive player, so stick to commenting on what you actually know about.
This self identified modern exclusive player clearly knows more about EDH than you do. The redirect to the Command Zone is optional; you can choose to have your general go to the Graveyard instead when it dies. Nice try, though. The whole condescension thing is hard. I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually.
To elaborate on this point, if only say half a dozen cards enter the modern playables pool each year, the format will grow stale unless one or two of them warps the format in a significant way. This is a bad thing for the survival of the format. Wizards knows this though, and even though standard and limited are the formats they are most concerned with when developing cards, they do keep the non-rotating formats in mind. Also, standard waxes and wanes in power level all the time, I wouldn't sweat it. We should be near the nadir of this cycle.
I hope that you are right. I just don't want another Dragon's Maze-like set.
Any reason to believe that Ephara's Enlightenment is a part of a cycle? (One for each of the gods)
Sorry if this has been asked already
I don't think there's much reason it wouldn't be, personally. No indication it is, but it seems like it could be a cycle worthy type of ability. In other words I wouldn't be surprised.
That said, we'll have to wait and see. There's no real speculation on it, and there's been no hints that it will. It could be just something that fits with Ephara's flavor specifically over anything else.

We seem to have a cycle of "Each God gets a Gold colored uncommon" but if you mean "Each God gets an Aura that bounces for some reason and gives +1/+1 counters" no, we're not getting that.
Champion of Stray Souls is how you get Recurring Nightmare, put it in a beatstick, make it work for any number of creatures at once, and make it horribly bad. there you go.
Yup. This card seems custom-designed for my Shirei deck, and he probably doesn't make the cut. Good job, Wizards.
You can choose to not put him in the command zone avoiding the plus 2 cmc, you should know better EDH...

I was hoping someone would say that. Yes, you could put him in the yard, then pay 7 to lose your next draw and then pay 6 to recast it from your hand, oh the efficiency. This ability only becomes relevant once you have cast the card from your command zone 4 times, and you're still losing a draw step. I know EDH very well, and this is not a card I'd use as a commander.
I appreciate you weighing in on this matter, especially since you have so much experience and information on the subject, but Im not sure why you present it in such a negative way? Your post just comes across as kind of condescending and unnecessarily rude.
I disagree with the experience, but thank you for what I shall take as a compliment.
You are entitled to your interpretation, but I have no reason to be condescending or (necessarily or) unnecessarily rude. There is nothing to gain and nothing to lose, but this is idleness and, in the bigger picture, there's no practical benefit from clearing up this flavour fail and deciphering the Greek-inspired name.
If you feel slighted, you do have my apologies.
6. Really, what's with the hostility? A simple "Actually it is Greek" would have sufficed. Rather a full on blitz attack on myself seems to have been in order. Why? Who knows. Seems rather extraordinary for something so simple and pointless.
Whoa, please don't be touchy and do take this with a grain of salt.
'Actually, it is Greek' is, indeed, simple but it isn't adequate to convince anyone that it is Greek and, more importantly, provide evidence in support of that or any reasoning.
So I think we can clear all of this up?
It's fine.
Again, my apologies if I came across quite confrontationally.
Oh no. This will see lots of play. The issue with anger is that it dealt 3 damage. this leaves X/3s alive.
Now you have a sweeper that clears out aggro, but doesn't kill your Sylvan Caryatid, leaving you with a 0/3 blocking mana dork. This card instantly makes the idea of a ramp deck much much better.
funny, i just read the card and thought "ok, now monoblack got even stronger". i think ust having this sweeper in black is more relevant than the caryatid thing, anger doesnt play a lot because red doesnt offer much more besides it for a control player, and the decks i saw it in were BR control, which i dont see being played anymore and 3 color decks that had hard times paying 1RR
Ouch. What a bunch of overcosted and boring junk, except for Drown, which is a good card, but HORRIBLE design. Obsolete cards that need obsoleting, not cards that are already playable. Yeeesh.
Shaaaaame!
Am I the only one who thinks that Champion of Stray Souls would be awesome as a legendary and thus a EDH general? I wish i could build a deck around him. Le sigh.
The Inspired cycle is very flavorful overall, but for cost effectiveness, I'll give the nod to the General [very nice artwork]. If I'm going to create tokens every turn, I'd rather create a pair of them every turn than one - especially when he CIP 1-4 turns earlier than the other guys.
No. Unless it specifically states it does, the ability only functions if EE is on the battlefield.
Also, there's been a lot of people asking this recently.

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.

Anyway, sorted, right?
The kids don't like it when Daddy and Mummy are fighting, mmm. Anyway, yeah, sure.
One for each gods, certainly. As to whether they are Auras with that unusual bounce ability and the +1/+1 counter ability when it EtB, not likely.

Never saw that article before.
