Wizards probably thank the gods, and apologize to the flavor team, that there wasn't room for him to brag about what his third arm did to the sirens.
Whatever happened to equipment, anyway?
I've not seen equipment hit play since scars, with the honorable exception of Silver-Inlaid Dagger and some overpowered spear.
That was well played. Well Played
On the equipment side, there was Runechanter's Pike in Innistrad, which was pretty good. Heck i was playing a black white deck that used it really well to the suprise of a few people in my local game store lol.

It will be pretty hard for them to print a better 2 drop than Pack Rat.
I guess I should have specified that I was referring to aggressive 2 drops. Pack Rat is good, yes. But it isn't a black sligh card like the Pain Seer is attempting to be. The 2 drops for black in an aggro shell are sorely lacking.
The Phoenix is a playable card in aggressive red decks that top off at 4. It is actually better than Stormbreath Dragon in those decks, because they don't need to worry about getting to 5 mana.
Underrated card. Just like the Pain Seer is overrated. I'd bet that this card sees more standard play than Pain Seer (provided that *any* other decent black 2 drop sees print.)
I give them a B+ for the card design. Since it is a phoenix it really should have the recursion regardless of the tribute. Either way, the amount of whining about that one card is oddly depressing.
Unfortunately there is already an extremely solid curve topper for mono-red in the form of Fanatic of Mogis, which is generally going to be be better much of the time. Certainly in non mono-red builds you'd never run Mogis, and could quite possibly run this, but mono-red generally has room for only a few 4-drops, and Fanatic has proven to be extremely good at what it does.
The other problem is that it is a poorly situated card against Mono-Black, which has several removal options available to it and a great answer in the form of Desecration Demon. Granted, you will likely sac out something to get through, but it is a problem.
Green has Arbor Collossus, and if experience has shown me anything my opponent will always get their sideboard cards, and I will rarely, if ever, draw into mine. Heh
Blue actually is great for this-either way it's terrilble for them.
And the red match-up will likely have used their burn by this point.
It certainly can be removed, but so can anything. I think the biggest problem with it, however, is that most of the time in the decks I'd want to run this in Fanatic is generally more than enough to close out the game and better for what you want to do. Meaning I won't really want to run this. Maybe post-rotation, when Devotion gets absolutely neutered forcing things to change (And thus Fanatic will lose a huge amount of useability with the loss of Zealot, Burning Tree, Reckoner, Chandra's Pheonix all at the same time), but as of right now there isn't a particularly good reason to run this over Fanatic.

Ah ok that's fine.
I would argue that black-based aggro is lacking in general. I think this could see more play in red or white-based aggro decks who splash black.
They might feel that equipment and auras are fighting for the same space flavour- and gameplay-wise, and they want us to play auras and bestow creatures in Theros.
On the Phoenix: We've come a long way since Rathi Dragon was $20...
As stated, lots of other colors have different, strong answers but I feel the interaction between this and an opposing Stormbreath is strong. Either get a blocker for it OR get a card that can't attack into it but is still a block and doesn't "die to removal". Seems like a hard card for mono-red to play against... oh wait they got that 4-drop removal spell... (if it matters lol)
Only reason this is mythic imo is because it looks to be just too good to be a rare for the limited environment. Turn 4 Pheonix, what do you do? I guess it really depends on what you draft... so you can play around it but still... not for too long.
People need to let go of this Mythic covetousness...the phoenix is at Mythic simply because it would be outrageously OP as a regular turnup as a short set rare in Limited. A 5/5 flyer for 4 in red is powerful and will see play. Mono red playing Hammer of Purphoros and RB playing Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch both make the Tribute drawback far from cut-and-dried, and the current Standard is not exactly choked with chump flyers to throw in front of the phoenix. Tmaw was a truly OP card and I think has warped many players' abilities to evaluate cards...not every card has to break the format to be good.
Finally someone who shares my thoughts .
I agree that the phoenix should be rare instead of mythic, but is it bad? No way.
Hero of Iroas looks awesome, it hits all the notes for me: high playability, nice art and cool flavour.
The Phoenix looks amazing. In standard it should get a lot of love, terrific in limited draft or sealed play, and also a decent card for commander. It will almost always be a four cost 5/5 with flying, the opponent is a jackass if they don't pay tribute, and the opponenet cant just sac elspeth tokens to tap it out( desa demon). remebering you are playing red, you can easily give it haste anyways, and bobs your uncle. The hero of Iroas looks like a great way to make bestow a playable ability in constructed format, as well as a solid rare in Limited, thanks to his heroic ability. he also makes normal aura's cost next to nothing. Neither card will be great in Modern, but otherwise, wonderful new cards.
Omg when i saw that phoenix... i was like "why doesn't it have haste1??!?!??!jfuerhgtfuierguikd"
I would be significantly happier if it was like, "If the tribute WAS paid, ~ has haste" and maybe a lower base power to make it easier to kill/balance it, so the revival ability would be... well, i can't say it isn't significant as it is, but still, Haste in some form would be AWESOME. The problem is Stormbreath is also a 5/5 for 2RR and his abilities are moer useful (and he has haste) so this looks very underpowered compared to it, especially at mythic.
EDIT: RTFC'd. Not paying tribute DOES give it haste. guess it makes sense balance-wise to have a 5/5 vanilla versus a 3/3 that swings immediately and revives itself, but I still think giving the 5/5 version haste will give your opponents more headaches. On a side note, lol on the pictures the author used to represent both sides
ALSO just checked again, storm breath is a 5-drop. wow, i'm not on top of things this morning. lol
I've also been looking for a good shell with Hopeful eidolon + Ethereal Armor, and the hero would be a nice playset! the third deck the author made has a lot of easy-to-find cards so i'm down with that! lol
Well its safe to say the Phoenix wont be good against removal heavy decks. They will just make it a 5/5, kill it and be happy that you wasted your entire on this and got nothing out of it.
Also if im not mistaken you can even use Lightning Strike to kill it since the trigger giving it haste and recursion goes on the stack and you can respond to it.
The Phoenix is terrible. Desecration Demon needed a very specific metagame in order to see play (it say no play for over a year) and it's a 6/6 for 4. This is worse than a 5/5 for 4.
I would bet the Phoenix started with tribute 3 and got downgraded... The bear might be pretty good considering the nyxborn enchantment creatures and we will have more gods to play with this set. Detention sphere for UW, thassa for U1, Ephara for 1UW, etc.

Check the card again. He only reduces the cost of Aura spells, so none of the cards you mention get a price break.

Hero of Iroas is fantastic.. it'll be fun with Fate Foretold and Hopeful Eidolon

awful card, really.
the hero guy is cute.
You mean in today's Standard environment, right? Because I can think of quite a few otherwise.

the hero is a good card. not so much in raw power, but in how it can scale relative to the cards around it.
