Kinsberg is working on Star Wars, he seems like a man who knows his stuff.
One thing key to a Magic movie is: its a game about battles. So...the movie should be about a battle! I was thinking Jace, Liliana, Chandra orchestrated against Garruk and Ajani (with an Avengers-like concilliation at the end, versus a foe like Bolas) would be pretty sweet. (Though on the villains, the Phyrexians are probably the most unique and iconic. So...bizarre)
Chandra on screen will be awesome. Jace would actually work better on screen than in the game---get a good actor to give him that atmosphere. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau or Tom Hiddleston or the sort.
On The Brothers' War, the Warcraft movie (from Moon's Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie) is going way back to Warcraft 1's plot with Medivh and the Dark Portal, so the 'back lore' approach has a precedent now. That said, it seems unnecessary: planeswalkers + huge magical battle (like, Two Towers/Helm's Deep) should do the trick.

that's not what happened at all. kamahl stabbed phage, akroma, and some old lady and they became korona. then korona got stabbed by her "prophets" and kamahl got drunk with a mutant centaur
I think it's possible to make a fine anime movie (given how awesome are those trailers they release every new set), but if they are thinking about a live-action movie... Man, that could end up being pathetic, possibly in Dragonball Evolution levels.
well Fox DID release Dragonball Evolution, so they do know how to do an absolutely horrible adaptation of beloved source material.
I think we should all be frightened because Fox put Simon Kinberg in charge of production and overseeing the franchaise (the guy responsible for putting the "I'm the juggernaut" meme into X-Men: Last Stand... the horribly not-cannon x-men film where they killed off cyclops for no good reason)
1st film : The brothers' War
Every thing normal and in the end When every thing explode they show urza's body being vanished ( while he holds the Weakstone and Mightstone) and when it head is starting to disapear he opens his eyes and then it blows and the planeswalkers' symbol apears. After credits (just like marvel studios) they show a young Yawgmoth talking with Glacian.

It's probably not going to feature a plane we already know, I'm sure it will be on the plane of the block that's out at the time of the movie's release. They do have general ideas for blocks 7 years in advance.

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring
Ironically, the less the film has to do with MTG the better it will be. Origin stories are perfect because it's basically a teen romance Twilight 2.0 while the same time grabbing actual MTG fan money.
It'll be such a cookie cutter story that they really don't need to spend money at all on the plot.
Twentieth century fox fanfare, then darkness, the magic the gathering symbol appears then fades out, slow deep cellos play a theme that resembles the new batman movies theme, a deep voice with an English accent narrates about how long ago, there were the five colors of magic and such, then, about planeswalkers and the spark.
While he is taken it shows clips of an island, a forest, a mountain, a swamp and a plain, then it fades out, the voice stops talking, the music stops and then crescendos, and it goes black for a few seconds. Then the voice says, "this is one of the many tales, of the multiverse,"
Then it cuts to the plane of ravnica, and then the voice says, "ravnica, this, is where our story begins."
Cuts to the cityscape and shows different areas of ravnica. Market places, buildings, etc, then the voice says "the plane completely covered in a cityscape, houses ten guilds. The guilds, of ravnica." it goes on to list the ten guilds, while showing a montage of guild locations and showing small clips of the movie associated with the guild. And then the voice describes the guildpact that was made long ago.
"but" says the voice "things have been growing restless within the city, the gatelless, begin to revolt, and things are uneasy with stability of the guildpact" the strings play a high note and hold, quick shots of explosions and buildings burning are shown, then fades to black. "the guilds are growing more, and more eager for power." Cuts to a quick shot of an orzhovan banker, dumping coins into a large treasury room. "and rumors of an ancient power, that should it be harnessed, should determine the guild that rules ravnica have begun to spread throughout the guilds" shows a shot of the maze, then fades out. "but, a young planeswalker, native to the plane, gifted in mind magic, has appeared on the scene, and little does he know, but he will serve a larger purpose in the plane than will ever know." shows shots of jace, walking through the streets. "and there are other walkers as well" shows a shot of vraska looking at a person who has approached and turning them to stone, and cuts t Gideon screaming as he stabs a warrior.
"but, time is short, and we will soon see what will unfold, and the young planeswalker jace may be able to stop this fued." it cuts to jace lighting a cavern, behind him emmara tandris, "but then again, he may not" the music is very loud and exiting It cuts to shots of a yelling brigade of boros fighting in a Rakdos club, then a shot of a borbygomos, smashing a person under his club, cut to a Lazav, saying to jace, "you may think you are the answer, but you are weak" cut to jace, flying through the aether, cut to Aurelia saying "things are about to get worse" black
Explosions and battles, including ral zarek creating a lightning bolt and such are shown, Huge music plays when each Cuts in, then stops when it blacks, then it crescendos then stops. Zoom out of the supreme verdict destroys buildings and lightning up, then blacks out
Voice says "and, how do I know all of this you may ask? Well." it fades into a place filled with a giant ceiling and machines running "I know all." then a red wing stretches out and it blacks and a final note is played and held until it fades ou while the release date and such are shown
There is already SO MUCH material: concept art, art, the block stories, the novels, the new comics, flavor texts, characters, locations....literally EVERYTHING they need. The problem here is that there could be too much stuff. Using the Harry Potter/LOTR model (enough material for the plot plus extra flavor) could be the right path. And its something the general public can latch on to for a good idea of things. It'll be interesting: as a player who grew up with the game in elementary school, hearing about an MTG movie brings back so many memories and nostalgia of times where playing in the woods turned into saving Llanowar from Yawgmoth.
It would be about a bullied high school kid with a failing love interest that is about to be run over by a truck. He thought he was dead but then he suddenly discovers that he is in another unknown planet (apparently his spark is just activated) and some wise old man show up to tell him that he is a PLANESWALKER. bla bla bla learning montage bla bla bla. He made a stupid mistake and some bad planeswalker learned about this plane called "Earth". The enemy would then go this plane and the hero has to stop him or something and possibly also save the girl he likes there too.
I would love for this to be the Brothers' War. Sadly, Maro said they created Jace and company just so they could eventually do movies, so Jace is what we're getting.
I'm not that optimistic either about how good the movie will be, but I'll cross my feathers anyways.

The best thing would be a movie where Jace & co unite against Nicol Bolas and defeat him. I think that the Creative understood that players are now bored with Bolas, that's why he hasn't been seen since like five years. It would be the best way to conclude this storyline.
Anyway, I'd like to see a new storyline, not the adaptation of a book or already-known stuff. They can end the Eldrazi storyline too, or the miran plot too, they have a lot of choice.
It would be about a bullied high school kid with a failing love interest that is about to be run over by a truck. I would imagine they'd start with Agents of Artifice. It's got Jace, the face of the franchise, on Ravnica, one of the most popular and easy to represent planes. Toss in him learning to control his powers, the appearance of the big bad Nicol Bolas and a love story with Lilliana and you've got a movie that sets the stage for everything else.

They key hurdles for an MTG film to do (in terms of educating the audience) are:
-The 5 colours of mana
-How duelling works (there are so many things that are going to be hard to translate into film)
-Planeswalking (other worlds exist, and they can be radically different)
If they've any sense, the writers will build a world that fits into the Multiverse but will ignore stuff from the card game that isn't based on flavour. If they include main phases and such, it'll look pretty stupid.
I agree that the 5 colours, planeswalking, and the basic concept of magic need to be introduced, but getting bogged down in specifics could be problematic.

“Tell me who you walk with, and I'll tell you who you are.” Esmeralda Santiago Art is life itself.
I can imagine this turning out to be a high school comedy, with Glacian and Rebbec as the cool couple, Yawgmoth as the goth kid trying to take Glacian's girl, and Urza as the geeky/sciency guy who used to be friends with Yawgmoth, but they had a falling out, and now compete over everything. And Yawgmoth accidentaly got Urza's brother killed in a car accident (That's why they fell out).

For people saying the Brother's War isn't relevant anymore, it's actually still really relevant. If you lead off the series with the Artifacts cycle, you get an amazing build-up, showing how Planeswalkers unlock their powers to begin with...
As long as the Planeswalker movie isn't as boring and long-winded as the book, it'd be fine. Then after Bloodlines, you jump straight in to Rath and Storm, then for the Weatherlight saga, have about a block per movie (or hell, two movies, if you're adventurous)...
Or you just start on Rath and Storm and leave everyone with no backstory. That works, too.
The Shards of Alara storyline is where I would expect the movie's starting point to begin, assuming they were following the itinerary of block plot. While this is the earliest point I can see them making a movie around, it wouldn't be the best plot for a stand alone movie.
I think this project will sit in development at the studios for many many years before anything gets greenlit. I just can't see a storylint that will please both the creatives as well as get approval from studio execs.
studio heads: "can't we make jace a starving artist from the Bronx who discovers that he has a spark capable of letting him make jumps though the multiverse?"
As I said in the other thread, this is probably going to be Jace: The Movie. He already has his own font and his own money, he might as well have his own movie too.
