While I doubt people will quit over this movie (I feel like someone will say it), I doubt there will be a HUGE influx of players. I'll likely go see them though.
The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.

One way to make the collectors quit: Free black-bordered Ancestral Recall for everyone who watches Magic: The Movie in theaters.
What a horrible stupid idea. Did anyone see the Dungeon and Dragons movie? Yeah, wow what a waste of money and time, you don't have to turn every property ever into a movie. Hollywood has shown an increasing level of lack of imagination, turning the convoluted and complex and at times down right awful and silly storyline of MTG into a film franchise is dumb. Yes there are some good characters and stories, but much of MTG storyline is so intertwined that you would need countless films to make even a fragment of it relate-able to an audience that has never even heard of Urza or Karn or Nicol Bolas.
The most one can expect is some half-assed made up story involving some of the names of characters from MTG with absolutely no likeness to them (sans Dungeons & Dragons the movie).
Seriously between the silver minted "coins" and now this movie deal, is Hasbro really that desperate to sell out their number one product? A movie is not cheap to make and if it bombs it can carry serious monetary back-lash.
Also I see these attempts as harmful to the actual core card game itself. When you start selling too many items with just the image of your core product in the hopes of draining funds from that product's fans, then the fans run out of money to support the core product. Ultimately hurting the core products sales and decreasing that core product's value in the eyes of its fans thereby decreasing its image overall.

rofl, that would be hilarious!
And the price PLUMMETS!! The reserved list is done for!! Legacy decks are now 100% Blue!! Headlines: Legacy bans entire color!! True-Name Nemesis players rejoice... then cry. Wizards replaces ruined color with Purple; Magic community confused, color pie in turmoil!!
Someone in the rumor thread before the official announcement talked about a Marvel style build up, a movie per Planeswalker, then OMG fight the BOLAS in epic final movie.
Keanu the mindsculptor--"I know telepathic kung fu.."
Nicol Trebek--'No , you dont."

Fantasy movies have been getting more popular (and thus getting bigger budgets) since the D&D movie. I seriously doubt it will be as bad.
Btw, I love that the press release also mentioned fan favorite old stories.

I'm amused that they keep using the word "franchise" because that makes it seem that they are confident that the movie will do well enough for a sequel. They have more confidence than I do that's for sure.
I'm not going to judge this idea until I actually see SOMETHING about it. Until you get an idea of plot, cgi effects, or ANYTHING their really isn't a reason to freak out.
Oh boy. Nothing like a bunch of CEOs trying to cash in on their franchise.
This has every chance at being absolutely terrible and embarrassing.
Whenever you let execs make decisions for a film, nothing but disaster ensues.
Magic's storyline is kind of cheesy to start with...so they would have to take some liberties and step outside some of the realm to not make it terrible.
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary

I bet we'll see real photos on some cards then. Oh oh, and maybe a whole deck based on the plot, all with actual footage and... Toys, I can see lots of toys.

Chandra: The darksteel reactor is about to blow what do we do?!
Elspeth: Let's make out.
Chandra: ...Ok.
I see Mr. Gylenhall as being more of Venser.
Keanu Reeves for Jace or BUST.
Keanu is only ever good in a movie when he plays someone who doesn't know anything.
Ewan McGregor as Jace is my vote.
