I don't want to see people like Jace and Chandra running around the multiverse...
I want to see Urza and the Weatherlight's crew, and the Phyrexia invasion.
That's a movie worth seeing.

Artifact Creature - Construct
Draft Conspiracy Draftifact face up.
Immediately after the draft, you may notice how freakin' screwed you are, as someone just used Lore Seeker to get a pack of Zendikar with a power nine inside.

I agree that they would be remiss to not involve multiple planes eventually. But if they are looking to make this into a series with lasting popular appeal, they really need to take it slow. You can't just start off slinging spells and hopping planes, or you'll lose any newcomers fairly quick. Think about some of the fantasy movie series that have become popular recently. Harry Potter starts out with just a relatable adolescent boy in the real world, who then discovers this alternate world of magic. Or Lord of the Rings, which starts out in an idyllic countryside with a birthday party before introducing any trolls or goblins or spells.
I think they would be best served around having the first film center around a single, relatable planeswalker (Chandra maybe) on their home plane before their spark is awoken. Give people time to get attached to the character and their situation, and then maybe towards the middle or end have whatever traumatic event that awakens their spark. After that the character can find out about other planes and other planeswalkers and whatnot. Maybe the second movie takes place on a second single plane, to let people get used to the multi-plane concept, and only after that have a movie which involves a multiple-plane plotline.
I couldn't possibly disagree more. The whole of the franchise centers around mages who are capable of walking the planes. Moviegoers who saw the first Thor movie and didn't read any of the comics had no problem connecting the dots on Asgard, Niflheim, or Midgard (Earth). I think you're seriously underestimating the attention span of the movie-viewing public, as they're entirely capable of watching a movie about planeswalkers and seeing more than one plane. It'd be hard to explain why planeswalkers are so special compared to other magic-users without going to other planes.
Also I see these attempts as harmful to the actual core card game itself. When you start selling too many items with just the image of your core product in the hopes of draining funds from that product's fans, then the fans run out of money to support the core product. Ultimately hurting the core products sales and decreasing that core product's value in the eyes of its fans thereby decreasing its image overall.
I find this a specious argument in regards to MTG. Maximum output for a player is going to be around $50. $25 for date night at the opening and $25 for the DVD. That'l be the total commitment. That's not even the price of half a box.
This movie will be seen 10:1 [or twice that amount] by folks who only go to see a wild fantasy movie. Having been burned on the D&D movie, this venture will be written for non-players and hence a probably decent film at worst.
The rest of us will go for the same reason we read any of the books or comics. We love it. And we always support family.
WotC creative turned Slivers into humanoids. If their own internal creative department can screw up something that simple, I doubt Fox is going to fare any better in their adaptation.
"A rich man thinks all other people are rich, and an intelligent man thinks all other people are similarly gifted. Both are always terribly shocked when they discover the truth of the world. You, my dear brother, are a pious man." - Strahd von Zarovich
Kind of hoping for the film to have the plot of Se7en. Jace could be Kevin Spacey's character, Gideon could be Brad Pitt's character, Koth could be Morgan Freeman's character, and Chandra could be the girl at the brothel who's copulated to death with the sharp, metal instrument. I suppose the guy forced to do it to her could be Ajani. Because why not?
Honestly The Brothers War I think would be the best film adaptation. It would require less pandering to a relatively small audience (mtg players) because it already is a focused and tight narrative that unfolds a lot of the layers at a proper pace. Growing up with Urza and Mishra shows protagonists that unveil information to the audience that they won't have to have missed out on such as phyrexians and eventually planeswalkers. Jumping in at say Lorwyn for example with the, "next gen," walkers of the Lorwyn 5 there would need to be a lot of expositional dialogue of, "we live in a multiverse, there are lots of planes, etc." Exposition is dry and slow pacing, they would make a better movie with a simpler story that evolves to show what a planeswalker is (by having Urza become one) and a nice and easy threat to show why the audience should care (Phyrexians = bad). It makes the most sense...but I doubt they will take the smart approach, if it is even made.

Hmm this movie will probably fit next to the "Battleship" movie on the library shelves (though at least battleships players never expected the movie to have depth greater than the game anyway).
Can not see them giving this too much of a budget, so i expect something of the quality of the first dungeons and dragons movie. but i still think they are going to struggle story wise since magic's world creation and characters (nu-walkers onwards anyway) has about as much depth as a rain puddle. Most of the non-Dominarian worlds actually feel like small islands or peninsulas what with the lack of diversity of cultures.

I also just stopped in to say it would be nice if they dropped the rather shallow and flashy planeswalkers for a great plot like the Brother's War. I think we all know which one will get people in seats and sell cards though.
I would like to call it now that there will be an appearance by a "grizzly bear" and bonus points if "Giant Growth" gets cast on it.
Oh boy. Nothing like a bunch of CEOs trying to cash in on their franchise.
This has every chance at being absolutely terrible and embarrassing.
Whenever you let execs make decisions for a film, nothing but disaster ensues.
Magic's storyline is kind of cheesy to start with...so they would have to take some liberties and step outside some of the realm to not make it terrible.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I am right there with you on this one, good sir. My best bet is to arm myself with all time low expectations.
There are good storylines in Magic, such as the Thran, Gathering Dark, Nemesis, or the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor arc, but we'll probably get some save-the-world, explosion-galore, planeswalkers-vs-giant-monsters extravaganza...
Ajani - Jeremy renner
Chandra - Scarlett Johansson
Jace - Robert Downey Jr
Garruk - mark ruffalo
Gideon - Chris hemsworth
Venser - Chris Evans
Let me tell you a story...
I grew up reading my stepdad's old Ghost Rider comics, playing DnD, and watching Ninja Turtles and transformers on Saturday mornings. Mr. Freeze was my favorite batman character, and I collected Garfield comics. Naturally, the announcement of the big screen adaptations of each was met with youthful optimism and exuberance and hope... I think you can guess the end result.
The only faith I have in this movie is the unshakeable belief that it will simply end in the destruction of what remains of my childhood under the bootheel of Hollywood....
Played by bill nighy
You mean, playing the same role as in the Sorcerer's Apprentice (maybe with even more questionable hair)?
I initially read that as Bill Nye.
I'm pretty sure that having Bill Nye the Science Guy play Yawgmoth would be the best thing ever.
