Wow. I did not expect him to be so powerful. His PWer card was just a warm up. I could see Jund making a comeback w/ him & Mogis in the same deck, even if you never activate either of them.
Holy.... HOLY MOLY
for a new god he sure knows how to make an entrance!!
Can...can this help RUG??
>swing Niv for 10 IMMEDIATLY, GRAB A CARD
>same with Prime Speaker Zegana and ESPECIALLY Borborygmos Enraged
I...I need to brew this and then cry because i'll never have the 2-3 Xenagos-es I need for it
However...
>Play Prossh, Skyraider of Kher as commander
>play this hefty dude T5
>next turn, cast prossh, SWING FOR 22/16, EFFECTIVELY KILLING SOMEONE
>NLY GETS WORSE EVERY TIME YOU PLAY HIM (provided xenagos is still around. which he probably will be)
>earn table hate for the rest of forever

And now it's time for me to be the Debbie Downer of the group.
I don't think he's as great in the G/R monsters builds as people seem to think. The deck's problems isn't hit big and fast; the deck already does that in spades. The deck's problem is consistency. You get an opening hand, spit it out and pray your big stuff survives. If you don't get Domri or Garruk, you're left with topdecking which is not where you want to be then. Given that your creatures generally don't have trample (Unless you have Nylea, which is exactly going to happen all the time), you're left with a big flashy creature that gets Chumped out. So basically, it's not a card the deck really wants as it seems to do something the deck is already fully capable of.
Now, it's a strong ability certainly. It could easily find a home. But the current lists are probably not that. You've already dumped your hand in spades by that point, and if you drew well you already have an unwinnable board state for your opponent. This is pretty much either a win-more or a do nothing card in most situations.
That said I like it alot. Just pointing something out.
mmm.... my only complain is his name
Xenagos is not only a planeswalker, but also a god!?...
Story tells us that travelling through planes made him feel insignificant, so instead he wanted to become a god of his realm--big fish in a small pond kind of thing.
He succeeded.
If you ask me, his god form should have premiered in the last set, you know, have that build up--trying to stop him from becoming a god in THS and BNG, but Elspeth fails and he succeeds just before BNG ends, and JOU is journeying into Nyx to fight/stop him. would seem like a fitting direction for this kind of story in a heroes' path-oriented deal (they could just as easily but the enemy gods here and allies in JOU), but i do wonder how the story will play out now

If anything, I am disappointed this wasn't a Big Spoiler on the MtG mothersite. I mean this is all about him, it is his block, his plan, his REVEL! And he gets spoiled on Instagram? Lame. I was hoping to see some cool story text on the daily MtG homepage...
He's still my favorite God so far. Revels forever! Yay!
Totally. Kind of strange that the face of this set and perhaps the entire block just gets flopped down without a cool article. I guess there's not much to say about his ability, but the reveal could've been at the end of some flavor fiction or something.
You can easily cast Xenagos on turn 4, then follow up with Raiders on turn 5. Xenagos is now very likely turned on, so you swing with whatever you cast on your first three turns + an indestructible 6/5 + Raiders, which are likely 9/9 or 10/10 haste from his ability and +1/+1 counters.
What we have here is basically a domri ultimate for 5 mana?
Not really. There are three big differences:
1. Doublestrike-kill off annoying creatures that proc abilities on combat damage. Not many, but some. Also means that your creatures dealing double damage is constant, rather than one turn.
2. Hexproof. Huge diference in abilities, and likely the most important difference.
3. Trample. The biggest different. Look, Xenagos is flashy as hell, but without consistent trample your big buff is going to amount to chumping out a 10/10 Polukranos or the like. Trample lets you push through the boost to the power. Otherwise, there is very little difference between a 10/10 and a 5/5. So I forsee the power boost being much less impactful than people think, excepting for evasion such as with Stormbreath, Hydra, or the like.
As I said, people need to calm themselves a bit and really be critical in their thinking (Not overly critical, or bash it, just use some common sense). The current lists for R/G in particular don't particularly care about this effect overmuch. Your major dude spit out has already happened by the time he hits, so you're left in top-deck mode. And topdecking a beefy creature seem fun until the first time it gets chumped out by an Elvish Mystic.
I wouldn't say he's not good; rather I don't think he's an auto-include in all decklists and certainly is going to require a bit more thought to use it effectively than "DOOOOOOODS!"

Pray your big stuff survives? You only need to have one creature left behind in your hand. After they're forced to cast Supreme Verdict to answer your early stuff, your leftover midrange creature is probably swinging for half their original life total the next turn. It doesn't need trample if they just boardwiped anyway.
Mogis was bad for control decks. This is fatal for them.
That was merely a reply to somebody saying it was Domri's Ult on a stick for 5 mana-which it most certainly is not due to major differences.
I think I'm being perfectly reasonable. I'm not saying he's unplayable; quite the contrary I think he is quite fine and will certainly see play. I just feel people are being a bit over-zealous here. I also feel that he doesn't really fit particularly well in current lists due to the fact that in those lists he's a win-more card it seems.
Rather I think he'll spawn something a tad different. Or maybe not. Maybe I am certainly wrong.
Don't get me wrong, it is a powerful effect and a generally strong card. Just not format defining or dominating.

I might actually come out of Modern hiding and play Standard if Jund becomes a serious contender.
They never use the promotional art for the main cards. I'm glad this is his real art because I love Chan's work.

but you know who else will get a hilarious kick out of Xenagos? well... would you make fun of me if i told you that my deck with him actually had him attack?
anyway, good to see such an awesome card. I would like to see Jund rise again, and if Phenax is awesome, BUG too

I much prefered the promotional art. Shame. Though this one makes more sense since it features the starry patterns more.

its like Hammer of Purphoros on crack. has an effect the turn it comes into play, and all subsequent creatures played will be heavy hitting hasters.
my prediction is this will be a 2-4 of in any future R/G/x decks; devotion or otherwise.

I am surprised at how pushed he seems to be though: this effect on an indestructible permanent is pretty intense
That "exile target enchantment" green spell is going to be key
