these say to me their stance is who cares what we make, mtg is a license to print money, put it on anything
Actually, I think that's exactly 180 degrees from reality:
There's a silver coin with pretty much every single thing on it. People, places, flowers, gemstones, famous quotes, every animal under the sun several times over (there are probably at least 100 different coins featuring wolves for example), women's body parts, letters of the alphabet, jokes, film/cartoon characters, etc. If you can think of it, you can find it on a silver coin. Silver bullion has been gaining in popularity for the past several years, and with it, a diversification into tens of thousands of different coin/bar/round designs. One of the only designs that hasn't appeared on a silver coin until this point: Magic the Gathering. And considering how much crossover there is between both coin collectors and card collectors/players, and between silver bullion stackers and card collectors/players..... this is long overdue.
You wouldn't believe how many times I've heard fellow silver stackers/collectors/enthusiasts say "there needs to be one with MTG on it". You may not understand, and that's fine - there will be a huge demand for these regardless.
There are some "big game" collectors out ther with way too much money. This is just a way to grab a few more bucks from them. Regular Magic players, move along, nothing to see here folks.
Ok this is cool i think. I wont buy any but i am sure silver collectors will eat this up and these will never really go down unless the price of silver suddenly drops
I don't know... I never would have guessed this would be a product, and it isn't one I would spend money on, but I think it is pretty neat. It is not my cup of tea, but yea... pretty cool.
This really isn't something I'd normally be very interested in either, though I'll admit I'm significantly more interested having read rancored_elf's posts.
I do hope these aren't super expensive though, cause my brother is a coin collector and this would be a super cool gift for him!
Don't buy this for the silver value. if you think it's MTG value will cause it to be worth more in the future, that's fine, but when it comes to silver bullion, you want to pay as close to the spot price as possible. So you're probably better off with a US Silver Eagle or a Canadian Silver Maple. Every bullion dealer has boxes of collectible and promotional silver 1 oz rounds and they won't give a damn about MTG stuff on it. So if you're talking yourself into it being an invest, make sure you're damn sure it'll be valuable as an MTG collectible and not just based on the silver content.
^ Exactly what I was thinking. Why would any gold or silver mint company sell this to the public, knowing that these precious metals would never waver as compared to currency? It's probably coz these "things" are sold at many times worth its weight in gold (or silver). What consumers are buying are merely as collectibles.
Collectibles and investments are different things. We could equate them together only if both are one and the same to a interested party. In the event you wanna sell this away for the same price or higher, you'd probably need to find a Magic player who happens to like collecting precious metals.
That aside, I wonder if Jason Chan receives royalties for each silver sold. lol probably Wizards' sole property.

The value of the coin will have much more to do with its collectability and rarity than the value of it's silver content. Silver would have to go up in value a huge amount to affect the value of the coin to collectors much. Dropping probably wouldn't affect it at all.
In an exciting new initiative, Wizards of the Coast is partnering with New Zealand Mint, to produce and market Magic: The Gathering® Collector Coins in precious metals internationally. The first coin will be released early 2014 and will be a limited release of 5000 pieces only.
Gotta tell you, that makes it a lot more interesting now. Anything there's only 5000 of in the world, that is even REMOTELY collectible, is worth looking at. Are coins remotely collectible? How about MTG products? All I'm saying is that there's potential.
This really isn't something I'd normally be very interested in either, though I'll admit I'm significantly more interested having read rancored_elf's posts.
Cool, thanks. Keep in mind, I'm just trying to provide some info, and my own opinion, in case it helps anyone. Not trying to endorse this thing. To be honest I'm not sure how much I like it, but I'm definitely interested in the idea of silver bullion and MTG meeting, and the 5000 mintage has intensified that interest.
I do hope these aren't super expensive though, cause my brother is a coin collector and this would be a super cool gift for him!
The OP said something about $100, but I can't see that actually listed anywhere. All I see is that they'll set the price closer to the release (probably based on how much demand they see out there). They say it has to do with the price of silver, but the melt value of these things is currently $20, and even the most bullish silver investors aren't predicting silver over $50 in the next year, so most likely they'll just charge what they think will ensure the coin sells out quickly, so they can move on to the next in the series.

Yes, well said. If you're investing in the metal itself, pay as close to spot price as you can. For example, with spot price at $20 per troy ounce, you can get a nice looking 10oz bar for $215, toss it in your safe, and see what happens. And yeah, Maples and Eagles are nice choices, both are going for about $24 per 1oz coin right now. But if you're a coin collector (numismatist), mintage number is what you're looking at. They mint 40 million 1oz Eagles every year to meet public demand - so they've got no value as collectibles. With 5000 of these being made, if it becomes a collectible that people seek, the going price for the coin will be determined by demand, not by the value of the metal in it. Sure, it can never go BELOW $20 (or whatever spot price is at the time), because you can always get that much for an ounce of silver. But the upper price range depends only on demand. Like I was saying yesterday, the "black and white spider" from the 2006 Australian coin series "deadly and dangerous animals" is now well over a grand each, and it's also a colorized 1oz 999 silver coin. It was the first in its series, too.
Short version, I think collectors of coins (and perhaps collectors of MTG products) should at least give this a glance. I'll be keeping my eye on it.

My guess is this will retail between 3x and 5x silver bullion value which puts it anywhere between 90$ and 150$. You're correct in informing people that this is essentially the equivalent of the melt price, and possible associated value of it being MTG related 50 years down the line, but at 50 years down the line the silver value will probly still outweigh the mtg aspect of it.
I thought this was going to be like a round, functional coin I could use to pimp out my Chance Encounter deck but instead it's this rectangular eyesore. This saddens me.

Would make a lot more sense as a product to me if it had been a normal coin. I don't think there's anything weird about a company having diverse business ventures. The strange part about this to me is that they chose to incorporate MTG into this. It would be like if Kellogg started selling Cinnamon Toast Crunch bowling balls.

Why? As I said above, there's a silver coin with every possible design on it, except MTG. This is long overdue.
Some coin collectors like Octopi - there are coins for them. Some like dead presidents. Some like jokes. Some like Bugs Bunny. And what do you know.... some of them even like Magic the Gathering!
It's not a Magic card that has been turned into a chunk of silver. It's a silver coin with a MTG design on it. Does that make more sense?

Not really. The thing about Bugs Bunny is that he's been around since 1940, and generations of children have grown watching him. Jace isn't anywhere near as well know as Bugs Bunny.
In fact to a great deal of people Jace Beleren isn't anything more than a card. I would argue that the majority of people who play magic don't read the books or pay attention to the lore. To these people Jace is more of a tool or a "means to an end" than a character with which they identify.
The demographic interested in this product seems extremely limited. People usually collect things that resonate with them or remind them of experiences that are important to them. "Bugs bunny made me laugh as a kid" or "Iron Man is my hero" are examples. I suppose if I won a tournament with Mindsculpters or something this might be that kind of product for me, but I don't think a whole lot of people can say that. I feel like if they want to push this kind of stuff they would have better luck if they made a movie or something first.

It does seem as though Wizards has been trying to make "brands" out of the main characters the past few years. In fact, the entire planeswalker card type has always felt like that to me. So maybe this furthers that goal of theirs.
But seriously, there are a lot of coin collectors out there (even if you aren't one, and don't know any). They tend to go for the coins that have something they like on them. And like I said, there's already almost every possible coin out there. I've been wondering for years why Wizards hasn't allowed somebody to throw some Magic characters on a coin.
I think there are at least 5000 people out of the millions of coin collectors in the world, who also play Magic. It'll probably sell out (unless they price it too high).
And hey, there are probably even a handful from the millions of Magic players out there, who also have an interest in precious metals and/or coins. But that'll be the smaller side of the demand IMO.
If they wanted to do it the other way around, they could have made a Jace Magic card out of silver. I've seen cards made of brass and other metals, so it wouldn't be a problem. But they didn't put silver on a Magic card - they put a Magic card on silver.
I think these Magic coins are really stupid, and I wouldn't be caught dead trying to purchase one.
That being said, for those of you who also aren't interested in this, why do you care that Wizards is pandering to collectors who might want it? On one hand, Magic players will complain that collectors are competing with players for the same supply of cards; but on the other hand, they'll complain when Wizards makes products exclusively for collectors that will never affect players.
