Some people enjoy being technically correct in a way that is 100% irrelevant. How the rules work for cards they won't ever apply to is interesting, I guess. If people want to talk about it, more power to them.
I for one, think it's cool that rules text gets updated so thoroughly and often and am interested only in how it will actually play at the table when the cards are actually available. For me, the explanation in the article that the mana symbols won't count twice is more than enough. It's very clear and I'm sure the comprehensive rules will be also made equally clear.
Devotion to white and blue is its own value. It's not devotion to white plus devotion to blue. Hybrid mana symbols count only once.

@TabakRules Will the Comp Rules be updated to clarify this?

@Spackerel Yes. New sets bring new rules. ;-P

We tried hybrid cards counting towards devotion twice. I am happy we didn't go that route.

@samstod Yuck. That does seem like a messy thing.

@mtgRikipedia both ways are somewhat ambiguous, the problem was more about development and balancing them around hybrid symbols.
Okay it's over done The rules are being updated to reflect the new cards when they hit the street.
You're arguing over hypothetical situation that was never going to happen. They looked at it both ways decided to go with the one that made the most sense and will update the rules to remove ambiguity.
The whole "You're move Wizards" is just silly. You didn't discover some loophole that they didn't anticipate and exposed them. They tested the mechanic, made a decision and have internally updated the rules to reflect that decision and will release those new rules at the appropriate time.
If it will placate everyone, I will admit that I didn't believed Wizards would put themselves into a position that necessitated such a rules change. They had more than enough design space to tailor cards - with an existing mechanic, mind you - to the rules without having to tailor the rules to the card. Insofar as that is concerned, I was wrong. As far as continuing the argument after the official spoil, I have already made my position clear on that point.

Which, I might add, they do with damn near every single set.
See flossed beaver can't admit he's wrong unless it's done in some suitably dramatic fashion where all his works crumble down upon him and the storm pours down and in the smoldering ruins of his 700.5 compliant empire he cries before the heavens! "Why god! Why have you misled me?! I trusted you! I did everything you said!" and as the cops arrive to lead him away he's retreated to stony silence, only to get called back up in the next season to help the protagonist catch some new bad guy.

If people were gracious winners when it came to arguments, there would no longer be a conversation going on. Alas, such is not the case.
I fear this thread is destined to be locked, and nobody here can claim innocence in the matter.
The more rational phrasing would be "devotion to white or blue".
That could equally be misinterpreted. If it was 'as long as your devotion to White or Blue is less than seven...' you'd have more people thinking they needed devotion of WWWWWWWUUUUUUU. I don't think there's a way to template it that doesn't confuse somebody.
I wonder if it wouldn't be better as devotion to Ephara. The reminder text would have read 'Each W or U in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to Ephara.' I suppose there would be a problem with devotion cards that aren't Ephara, but at least Ephara herself might have been less confusing. Maybe.
If there's this much confusion here, where the rules sophistication is high, I shudder to think what some well attended prereleases will be like.

Fortunately, there will be no hybrid cards at the prereleases, so devotion to white + devotion to blue can simply be added
We aren't going to close the thread down right away, but we'll have no choice if this derailment keeps going. Please drop it. We'll be dealing with any individual posts that merit it shortly.
While I don't share FlossedBeaver's point of view on this rules dispute, his reactions tell a lot about his character. Thanks for keeping it civil at all times man!

You have a lot to learn about humility, my friend. Perhaps the moderators will be kind enough to educate you, since I was unequal to the task.
