Despite the title, perhaps a more apt (tentative) comparison might be the Premium Deck Series; both have their own expansion symbol, are intended for non-rotating formats, and can potentially be used as a platform for high-profile reprints.
After seeing mixed success with their Standard Event decks in including eight rares, then bumping up that count to 10 when they switched to just one event deck per set instead of having two, yet the price still stayed at $24.99 MSRP, it's almost a given that either half the cards in the deck are going to be rare, or they're sticking to the 10 rare count but going for value to justify the $75 price tag.
Two, the "Modern Masters Event Deck" expansion symbol is more than likely going to be printed on these cards, making any cards printed in this deck extremely unique and, in the long run, very hard to find. Either they print this deck significantly and collectors scoop them up, or they oversaturate the market with them hoping that consumers will jump on the idea of grabbing chase cards with a unique expansion symbol they can't find anywhere else and hope the cards inside are worth the $75.
I wish this weren't an event deck because then I could do the Barnes & Nobles cheat to get it at MSRP. Also, the new 1 event deck at a time model makes a sucky event deck all the more a waste of money.
I suspect the deck list will make some people happy but still won't be terribly playable as is.
It already appears to be at a vastly inflated price! $75? Egad.
I am so in favor of Modern event decks, but that price is very prohibitive.
I'd love to see a Modern Game Day as well.
On the price: That is one hell of an msrp they are pitching here. Expect PW's shocks, checks, a bob here, a goyf there, throw in a Clique for good measure, and probably more rares than usual. These are going to be BIG, and I expect that it will be hard to get these for msrp unless they are in Targets or whatever.

I'd guess we'll see a Melira Pod list. Lots of 1-of's, some money uncommons (Finks), fairly cheap core rares (Pod and Melira), enough spots for a few flashy rares, and a diverse mana base featuring spots for a few fetches.
And yes, I do think this is how fetches will finally be reprinted - not in Standard.

Seeing as it comes with sleeves and a deck box it isn't going to be marketed towards those of us who play the game seriously / competitively. The value of the cards inside more than likely won't be worth the MSRP.

Would Dark Confidant still be good if he punched you in the face for 5 damage a turn?
Anyone think this is going to be the platform that WoTC uses to print fetches, instead of including them in a Standard set? I know there has been a lot of speculation on them being printed soon, either in a Standard set or MM2. I'm just saying I would be very disappointed to not see them in a Standard set because that essentially rules out Onslaught fetches being reprinted for Modern use.
Anyways. I'm fairly excited about this. I want it to be the product WoTC uses to ACTUALLY help other players enter the format, unlike Modern Masters.
Spindown life counter, 80 exclusive card sleeves, 5 double-sided tokens (4/4 and 5/5 Dragon, Special Ajani Goldmane Avatar token, 1/1 Pegasus, 3/3 Wurmocoil lifelink token {you have to buy another event deck for the deathtouch one}), and a deck box -MSRP $20
Deck + sideboard (burn with Tron lands)- MSRP $40
Strategy guide (written by MaRo and doodles from new recruit Gerry Thompson) -MSRP $14.99
With all the stuff that is coming with it, I
Hope that they actually do put worth while cards in it. But not so crazy worthwhile that it will skyrocket the price...
When the m20 collector thing came out I got it for 100, hopefully I can have the same luck with this
Im sure it will be much along the lines of the Event Decks which most wouldn't consider to be Tournament caliber decks but it has the start of one. With all the Rares and/or Mythics being playable in the format.
More so this opens up the possibility for them to reprint some really overpriced uncommon cards like Remand. Cards like remand I can totally see them putting 2-4 of them in the box just to increase supply on cards like this.
Depending on the cards included this could be sold in the secondary market for well over $100 or it could be 1 scalding tarn + some random jank/worth exactly what the MSRP is. Interested to see what they'll be putting in these though for sure and how big of a print run these will have. As well as what colors.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
This isn't getting sold at MSRP, is it. Also, it looks like Wizards is trying to get those holofoil stamps on some Modern cards.
This product comes out in May. M15 comes out in July and will be the first set to feature the new card frames (and foil stamps), therefore - the cards in this event deck will be printed with the current layout.
BTW - why do people think there will be more than one event deck? the announcement specifically states this product is an Event Deck in singular and not plural.
And suddenly I know where my tax refund is going. My LGS does commander sets 5 for 150 and has plenty of stock so I can only expect they'll be stocked on release date.
It comes with sleeves, life counter, double sided tokens and a deck box. Some nice extra value in that. We will have to see what the content of the cards is before making any final judgments but all in all seems like they are trying to give the people what they want which is commendable.
I would just like to add that there are a lot of LGS owners who are not in the habit of trying to suck every MTG players they meet dry. There will be a lot of stores that will just see these as buy them for $50 sell them $75 and if they sell fast enough order more. Some stores need to sell a certain amount of goods to stay alive and keeping product just in case you can get more in three months time is not good business sense.
I'm quite sure it will contain at least one fetch. Not playing modern, I'm quite happy I sold them recently for good value (with the upcoming GP Prague and stuff).
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
It sounds rather weird that they would only make 1 event deck... That will skew the market since the cards for that deck would be a lot cheaper afterwards (even if the cards cost the same as MSRP, there will simply be more availability so people who now have some of those singles will see the prices drop).
Also, if you don't like the deck type, you're basically out of luck. If it is aimed at new Modern players, it's probably something like Burn or Robots.
I would have liked 5 event decks or something like that;
Robots - aggro
Splintertwin - pure combo
Pod - combo/control
Burn - aggro
UWR control - control
Fat lot of good that did with Commander's Arse...nal.
These are going to be ridiculously expensive.

Question - one deck or different decks?
That could work. Chord of Calling and Voice of Resurgence have both been needing reprints anyways.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
