Oh my god, dat Mogis-art o.O I really like his location. Are these tombstones ? On a cemetery ?
im actualy no fan of Rakdos, but I like this art among the so far known gods da best !
Id like to know why Spoilers start next week. GTC-Previews started on Jnuary 2nd
I was expecting BNG-Previews this week. I wonder for what reason did they choose next week. To make another week of uninteresting articles ?
This just disappoints me to no end. I was hoping that we could get an established Pacific-style plane, even though I knew that would most likely never happen.
I do like her flavor though. There's little I dislike from this article in fact.
I agree. I feel as though that this was somewhat lazy on the part of Creative to just make her from an established plane that everyone loves on a mission to stop the Eldrazi, whose storyline most players have a major interest in.
Or maybe it's Marketing's fault for influencing Creative into this direction. Either way, the not-subtle intent of Kiora's backstory is to build player hype for the now-inevitable return to Zendikar that Kiora represents. Don't get me wrong: I want to revisit Zendikar and the Eldrazi. I just don't like marketing ploys to seep into the creative story in such an obvious way.
I keep getting this mental image of Xenagos dancing to Party Rock Anthem as he was ascending to godhood.
Sorry for the double post, but along these same lines, I always imagined the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started" playing as he's ascending to godhood.
It makes sense. To fulfill his wish, Xenagos had to fill himself with the energy of a thousand partying soldiers. He will become so overloaded with party energy that he will demolish everything in his path.
This fits the Greek mentality pretty good.
Immortality is the main (if not the only) difference between gods and human beings (in Greek texts the gods are often just called "immortals" as opposite to the human "mortals").
Greek gods aren't transcendent entities, that live "outside", created the world and observe it from a separated area.
They live in the same world (on the Olympus) and interact with mortals. They are not the creators of the world, they even dont't exist at the begin of the world - they all were born in a particular way. They are NOT without fail, omniscient and omnipotent like the Gods in the later monotheistic religions. They are not the "logos" of the "kosmos", the principle of the universe, the metaphor of "everything" and the personification of the "good" and the "rational" - the Greek gods are very humanly, have very humanly problems, drives and failings.
They just are Immortals, which distinguishes them from the human sphere.
And I think this Greek idea is well transformed in the logic of the game mechanics (Indestructible)!!
Yes and no. It's true that the Greek gods didn't create the world, but they directed descended from (and, arguably usurped) those that did.
For all intents and purposes, however, the Greek pantheon (specifically, Prometheus, who is actually a titan rather than a god, but I digress) is responsible for creating humans. After the creation of humans by Prometheus, it was Athena who imbued them with reason.
Yes, the Greek gods acted very much like "humans" in their pettiness, but that doesn't mean that they weren't supremely powerful. There was no power above the gods in Greek mythology.
Just because the Greek gods weren't the personification of all that is "good" and "rational" doesn't mean that there was a higher power above them. It just means that the culture responsible for their creation had different views of the world than those responsible for creating monotheistic deities that are the ultimate "good" in the universe (i.e. the Persian god Ahura Mazda, of whom the Hebrews learned quite a bit about during the Babylonian exile).
Okay, here's my big question. What sides are the Gods all taking here? It seems that among the fray, the Gods are fighting each other. It talks about Irona and Heliod siding against Mogis, and likely Xenagos, so then who else is partaking in the war, and which side (if any side) are they going to choose? I'd almost be kind of mad if it was your stereotypical "black colors vs white colors". What do you guys think?
Kiora's not fighting the Eldrazi by rallying bands of brave but youthful human soldiers to the cause. She's throwing giant, many-tentacled sea monsters at them. She couldn't get more U/G unless she was also scream-singing Wolfmother lyrics.
Throwing many tentacled sea monsters at many tentacled eldrazi monsters, that is a lot of tentacles.
The planeswalker guide is awesome, the art for magic just feels like its getting better and better. The stars have such a unique feel on the art that it just brings out a state of awe. I hope it continues.
I am not entirely convinced that all the gods will be allied pairs for "Born of the Gods" I would honestly feel like it would be a mix, my first thoughts would it might be opposite of the temples but if we get mister Reveler that kind of nulls that. I just hope its a mix, because I really really really really want the G/B god.
I am interested to see the Nyxborn, maybe we will get a reverse bestow? A creature enchantment that when it dies it becomes an aura?
Here are a general sum of all of my thoughts on the Planeswalker's Guide to Born of the Gods. First off, I'm excited that there will be a new enchantment creature ability! Here's to hoping that it was like my custom created ability, Aurafied.
Aurafied (When this creature dies, return if from your graveyard to the battlefield with a essence counter on it. This card is no longer a creature.)
The idea here was that even after the creature dies, its essence remains. It would allow enchantments to have better resilience, activated abilities, and could be on every color. That would be a great ability for the Nyxborn creatures that they're talking about.
"As more Nyxborn beings appeared in the mortal realm, the gods blamed each other for the chaos and, in their anger, sent ferocious Nyxborn creatures against the mortals."
Pretty typical to argue and then send armies against the mortals after they blame each other.
"Yet the paradox of divinity is that god cannot destroy—or create—god. Although they resent Xenagos's intrusion, the rest of the pantheon cannot expel him from their midst. Nor can a being born of Theros strike a god from the sky."
Pretty obvious that a team of Planeswalkers; Elspeth, Ajani, and maybe Kiora or anyone else who wants to team up on the Satyr, will have to take him out. Since they're from another plane, this works perfectly.

My guess is that it won't be black v. white. I think at least Erebos will want to get rid of Xenegos.

I can see this happening: Elspeth and Ajani fight Xenagos, Xenagos kills Ajani, Elspeth goes bananas and kills Xenagos, and through her valor and yadda yadda enters the Pantheon.
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.

You have too much faith in Elspeth. Her "mancy" is that shes a messupmancer. Note: she led the army into the fight that cause Xenagos' upheavel. WELL DOESNT THAT SOUND FAMILIAR. She will probably onadvertantly kill ajani, and i highly suspect that she will not survive this block, though I think her dying by doing spmething right for once would be nice. Maybe shell just run away again.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I fear I won't have much time to play Magic these days.
I get to watch worlds develop around me.
I get to watch great leaders, terrible oppressors, and trend setters rise and fall.
Limited, Standard, Modern, everything is a different playing field I feel I can observe, but will not actually touch.
I look forward to the stories I will hear.
And more so to the ones I will watch unfold first hand.
Isn't the unknown exciting?
Id like to know why Spoilers start next week. GTC-Previews started on Jnuary 2nd
I was expecting BNG-Previews this week. I wonder for what reason did they choose next week. To make another week of uninteresting articles ?
Most certainly because GTC is a big set. More cards to spread out.
A giant Minotaur god of bloodlust and violence made up of the angry night sky standing over a vast wasteland littered with graves shredding on a demonic-looking guitar.

MOST. METAL. EVER!!
RAINING BLOOOOOOD. FROM THE LACERATED SKYYYYYY.
On topic: I'm EXCITED for this set. I WANT IT NOW.
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.
Also, I really hope Kiora's plan of "Krakens vs. Emrakul" comes to fruition.
I don't see that happening, considering they've got protection from colored creatures. I think Kiora isn't thinking clearly!
Also, Elspeth won't become a God, because that defeats the entire purpose of the storyline. Why would she become a god and Xenagos not? They'd have just as much of a problem with that as they would Xenagos. Additionally, I doubt Ajani will die. I bet they'll team up, Ajani will reunite the cat people Leonin to befriend the people of Theros again, and they'll also "exile" Xenagos into the blind eternities so he can't be a god again once he's lost into oblivion. This ending doesn't lose any characters, leaves it open for other stories for the planeswalkers, and brings a semi-good ending to Theros. Everything else sounds like crazy speculation that we all know will never happen.
Awoooo!

If he is, indeed, getting a creature card, then I'd say it's very likely that becoming a god means losing your spark.
- Main Cube
- No Brains, All Feelings Cube
That also was a plot of Zendikar block to an extent.
Also, I don't know what card that gorgon art is used in, but I can already tell I want a bunch of foil ones!
Makes sense that Green and Blue would meet halfway at their endgoals, i.e. the color between them. The same is true for all the enemy pairs.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails, Faith & Wrath (Control)
Jarad, Life & Death (Reanimator)
Merieke, Seduction & Obedience (Control/Steals)
Intet, Dreamworld (Aggro/Control)
Rith, Predators (Aggro)
It's confirmed to be Iroas because it matches Priest of Iroas.
Also, Karametra is a woman.
Mogis. Same figure from the Planeswalker's Guide
Well then why was one of the first arts spoiled for the set Iroas (RW)?
