I must say I am impressed; it doesn't look like a single person has posted that they are going to quit Magic because of the new card borders.
Kudos, MTG Salvation community, you've managed to both surprise and impress.
As for the changes: While I am not enamoured by the border change, I am certain I'll stop noticing it pretty quickly.
As for the year in review: They owned up to the individual problems of each set (and the RtR Block as a whole) but we're likely right in marking off even the more beleaguered sets as wins instead of losses. Nothing that hit the shelves this year felt dredged from the very bottom of Magic design in the manner of sets like Saviors of Kamigawa or Prophecy.
I'm excited Waste Not got a good casting cost. Card looks like it'll be a lot of fun to play.
The black bottom is actual "ok" and makes sence, which probably will help to develop really nice features to machine read in cards (for trading markets online).
However, i really dislike how the actual frame is so unproportional, it looks like a "miscut" card or a misprint, they should at least have the actual box in sync with the colored border, that is a really downer for me (i just hate how it looks).
The holo thing is horrible.
I enjoy rares and foils, the holo on sleeves is allready something i dislike and in addition to that i get just another holo dot in the middle ? Too much holo crap for me, its so unnecessary and has many disadvantages for card alters and especially as old rares dont have it, makes the change really annoying, in terms of a player it simply distracts and has no advantage.
They try to sell it to me as "cool", but its just a random holo sticker that feels not like a nice idea, especially as i dont like the "icon" at all.
Especially as that holo sticker is placed on the card makes it so ugly. If they so badly wanted, put it on the black bottom and not in the actual card, just cant like it.
There's a lot about this that I like and hate. The only one of these changes that have a real reason is the hologram. The rest is just someone in WotC going "Hurr durr, I think we need to spruce up the cards a bit!"
That negative space man... that negative space. And the uneven curve... ughhhhh. Why?!

Alright, I could see that being the reason. Still... that uneven curve. :/
Correction, nobody loved the new slivers more than the old slivers.
No, I quite seriously meant slivers in their entirety. New or old aside, I've met more than a fair share of players who dislike the creature type in its entirety.

That is what I meant, and nothing else.
And I've met a lot of players who enjoy the creature type in my 11 years playing this game. Generally speaking though, they don't like to play against that creature type
Counter-fit must be bigger than what i thought, I wonder if thats the a factoring reason they have added these new changes.
I dont mind the new changes, the holo sticker is a little weird... but i mean its better than putting a GIANT purple stripe and little 'mtg' symbols through all the rares and mythics lol
I wish that the black borders did not do that curvy/slanty thing at the bottom. If the color outline went all the way to the bottom of the text box, it would look cleaner.
I don't mind the holofoil, but I don't like how it pushes into the text box.
Generally, I wish that the new card frames were more squared off. No slanted bordered, or holofoil pushing into the text box. Besides for that, no complaints.
still haven't fixed the real issue with the frames: low contrast between the frame and text boxes, and low contrast between cards of different colors. so they looks horrible on paper and much worse on screen.
hmmm....For those who played back then who remembers their reaction when MTG changed from the old pre-modern borders to the current borders?? I started playing when Darksteel was released and almost a year into the modern frame. Seem MTG players are so resistant when it comes to the slightest change.

That was a drastic change, but that's just it... it was drastic. It was huge. It was more than some minor tweaks just "because". It was WotC rebranding their games image to try and appeal to the masses. In the end I don't think this will matter, but there is definitely a difference between something radical for a reason, and some minor tweaks just because.
You played JESUS?!?! I heard none of his guys stay in the graveyard, and once you think you have him beat he ALWAYS comes back to win within three turns. I like...WORSHIP him.

which is why I liked it when Wizards did the timeshifted cards in the old border as well as some of the judge foils of cards that were never in the old frame such as Swords of F\I and L\S, Cruicibe, Bob, and Noble being the most prominent. they look so much better in the old frames. though I'm impartial to the new ones. I do like the Eldrazi colorless borders though with the art extending beyond the typical frame.

The reaction was an immediate, and profound, "The sky is falling, everyone jump ship now!" event from many. I regret to say I was part of that group, but I also went on a hiatus shortly after for other reasons. I still vastly prefer the old frames, but ce la vi. It's no big deal and the current one are fine.
That said, this is hardly the same. It's small tweaks here and there, and for the most part I agree with the frame changes. I doubt there will be the backlash.
seems decent. actually like the new look, although not sure the foil stamp is entirely necessary, unless counterfeits are actually a huge problem and i wasn't aware of it until now.
counterfeit old cards (moxen etc) are commonplace. counterfeit new cards? hmm
so yeah, on balance - foil stamp looks a little cheesy, otherwise i'm happy enough.

Way too much black on the bottom of the card relative to every other side. I know they are making space for all that additional text, but the whole card now looks bottom heavy and off center.
Other than that, it looks fine.
Such minor changes from the old modern bordered cards, not sure they they even bothered until there were more changes to make.
I agree with someone else who posted that if they really wanted to do something drastic, they should have gone completely borderless (like lots of alters) or as close to borderless as they could get for the printing process they use. If they're going to make a change, then make bold changes, not just baby steps.

I never want a situation like they have in yugioh were you can actually weight the packs to find the better rarity cards.

EDIT : after looking more carefully, i think it's a good tweak. and i feel good about it

I know, I was correcting my previous statement.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
