The insert idea could work, though would probably take more effort to implement than its worth.
Not really. Pokemon implemented it recently for PTCGO and as far as I can tell, it was painless. Nevermind the fact that Wizards already does it for Kaijudo.

Even assuming it could be easily done, they still wouldn't do it on any large scale. They might include free boosters or free promo codes, but never let you scan your IRL cards into MTGO. It just doesn't make sense financially for WOTC to do that.

Well, Pokemon's inserts give you the same pack online, which is what I would like to see them do for MODO.

Nah, not a fan. The curved black area at the bottom is awkward at best. The font is less legible than the original and I don't think it needed any changing, just to be "unique to Magic". Not sure about the little holograph yet. Seems gimmicky.
Would I be considered a douche if I emailed wizards about how I am not a fan of the new frames? I mean I would try and make my email tasteful and respectful. I just think its a wasted opportunity for them, they could have taken it into a different light. Or am I just being too caring?
They'll ignore you. They must have gotten many more emails when the 8th edition frame change happened. Nothing changed then.
Well, Pokemon's inserts give you the same pack online, which is what I would like to see them do for MODO.
Irrelevant what other games do. They are not as profitable as MTGO. Why would WOTC ever give you exactly what you get in every pack that you buy? It makes no sense for them. It would take a huge amount of money from them. Again, I think they will do something similar once they figure out the other MTGO issues and get everyone on to the Beta where they have already implemented the promo codes, but they're not gonna give you your paper collection online, or even give you your future paper collection online. It's just gonna be promos or free packs in random packs.
Jenna has a huge fetish for Elspeth. Usually when designers "gush" about a certain card, you can be sure it's constructed playable. Just wait for what she'll say on interviews.
Anyways with the new M15 frame, we can be sure to do a "miracle" whenever we topdeck. coz holofoils are only on rares and mythics...
Pseudofate was talking about where the card "color" ends:
Perhaps he was, but that still doesn't make it the same card frame. He claimed it was the Planeswalker card frame, not that it was part of the Planeswalker card frame.
Would I be considered a douche if I emailed wizards about how I am not a fan of the new frames? I mean I would try and make my email tasteful and respectful. I just think its a wasted opportunity for them, they could have taken it into a different light. Or am I just being too caring?
Not at all. In fact, despite being a fan of the changes, I encourage you to do so. Typically, the person to email is Mark Rosewater, as he will pass your email on if it's not something he feels he should deal with, but if you want to find someone else to send it too, that's okay too. Feedback is one of the major ways they know how people feel about major changes like this, and email is one form of it.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
The effectiveness of which will be questionable outside of casual play. In Standard and Modern if you're playing Thoughtseize (or Inquisition of Kozilek) then you're hitting them on your first turn before Waste Not will even be in play. Outside of Pox in Legacy, the most discard effects played are Thoughtseize and Liliana. At best it has potential synergy with Liliana of the Veil's +1 ability, but Waste Not will not do anything for decks that are already playing her and there will be no room. Legacy Pox is the best place to fit Waste Not in, and even then you're choosing to take out a finisher such as The Rack to make room for a card that only generates card advantage as long as they have cards in their hand. I'd rather drop a Dark Ritual and a Thoughtseize and Hymn to Tourach off of it than drop Waste Not into Thoughtseize.
That's exactly what I thought when I first saw it. All the rest of the changes seem fine to me - especially the new font - but I can't understand that decision. I wondered if it was because they didn't want the curved edge going behind the power/toughness box, so I made a quick mock-up to see, and it looks much better to me. What do you think?
I don't mind the new border. I find it a little distracting but I'm sure I'll get used to it as long as i don't actually look at how uneven it is. Orange Mage's border is much better.
I don't mind the holo, but I feel... eh, suffocated because of the thinness of the borders. It looks like the card layout is going towards art+text, with no borders at all any more. They made the border thinner AND removed colour from the bottom completely.
Soon the only place you see what colour a card is is the mana icons.
I still love the original old frame. The card colour was clear, the P/T numbers on the bottom didn't stand out so much and the text area had specific background art that fit the card colour. It was much more natural looking, with colour and art.
The modern frames are more and more ... industrial? Modern? Less colour, less room to breathe, more and more parking lot for text.
I just wished they had somehow made the expansion symbol the hologram instead.
I agree with this sentiment. After seeing the new card frame earlier this night, the tacky foil stamp being center AND breaking into the text box, was my most notable distaste with it.
I do like (to a varying degree) that the artist credit and collector information are more legible, but the amount of black bordering on the bottom does draw my eye in a displeasing way.
The new font is acceptable; neither much better or worse than the previous one.
If I had a choice, I would keep the way they re-did the collector info & artist credit, make the rarity symbol the authenticity stamp, and lower the point in which the border curves to minimize the amount of black. That would be far more tasteful, in my honest opinion.
I don't like either of the above. They look like it's supposed to go lower but just got abruptly sliced off by a paper cutter.
The thing is, the black at the bottom is completely unnecessary in the first place. They could have just added the holo if they wanted, change the font if they want, keep the bottom exactly the same.
The only stated reason is so that the "machine can read it."

^ Oh hey look! an $80 off the shelf piece of junk that runs on your mom's 5 year old laptop, and yet can still recognize variable fonts on the fly without knowing what they are ahead of time at 150 characters per second... while translating it to another language.
WOTC doesn't even have a task that difficult! They only need to read a KNOWN font (the title of the card) in a KNOWN language, with a KNOWN pool of possible words it could be, in a static location with optimal lighting and a perfectly flat surface. And I'm pretty sure they should be able to afford something better than an $80 junk gizmo and dusty consumer software to do it with... The computers do not need any such thing in the corner to read the cards. it doesn't make any sense at all.
I send a hand-written letter every three months imploring them to go back to classic borders.
Sorry, but I had to say this: people like you make me laugh. Why are there still people who actually think Wizards would go back, or should go back? The Modern frames are clear and efficient at presenting information, and these newer ones moreso. They show you information. Why should they not be as clear as possible?
I'd personally quit for a while if the big WotC brought back pre-8th frames. They are so unprofessional and messy looking. Yes. that's right. I think that classic MtG frams look bad. I really and truly do. They were a barrier to entry for me back when they were still in use. The game looked so amateurish and poorly put together that I didn't want to touch it. I did, though, and I'm glad I did, but it shows how poor graphic design can push away potential customers.
Also, the new Slivers are ok, Mythic wasn't a mistake, and the new Legendary rule is nice for EDH. Any more unpopular opinions I have I should share, or are all of you gonna run out of stones to bash me with with these?
actually the holo circle is the only thing i liked from the YGO card game.
It gives the genuine feel the cards needed other than "RIP it to see if it has blue in it " (back when we were kids we distinguished the fakes due to the holo box in the right corner. (and other things but this is so obvious/ hard to replicate)
It makes it harder to counterfeit cards, makes "rare" cards more special.
Im not really into altering arts. I see why people love them, some are really cool and beautiful. But just drawing around it/etc would be ok i think.full art alts will have a little holo circle but what can you do? just adapt
if the set symbol was the holo thing it would be cooler, nicer to the eyes etc etc but then they'd have to make 2 ,one for mythic one for foil, then print a new one for each set(2 for rare/mythic) not practical at all
edit : i forgot to add, the only thing i hate/dislike a lot is the flavor text of waste not. they sure could do a fantasy oriented flavor text to give us the props. like really it's just silly and breaking the 4th wall. how many times have they done this on card flavor? it sucks...!
oh the black border on the bottom is ok, we will get used. i play mostly black anyway.

This. Maybe the pre-8th frames were OK during that time, in a similar way I find old computer games graphics appropriate during the time they were released. But eventually, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion has to become Skyrim, 8-bit games have to give way to 3D games, and old card frames have to adapt to the times and become these clearer, more space-efficient, and more professional-looking ones.
I now seriously doubt if we will ever get full art vanillas or get the future-sight borders.
As sad as it may seem, we were probably never going to anyway. It was an overly futuristic style that, while looking kinda awesome, was probably never actually taken that seriously as far as future cardframes go. It was sorta the Jetsons future for Magic, not the realistic one.
But anyway, I agree with both parties. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and should indeed express it to Wizards. At the same time, I do feel like there are some things that players should take a little less seriously. The new card frame is different. It does what it needs to do in a slightly better way than before and that's it. It wasn't supposed to look cooler, just be more practical. It's the same thing with the 8th Edition change. The old frame, while some may have liked it, didn't do its job as well as the new one, so they changed it. It's still the same game and still has the same cards.
Personally, I kinda like the new frame. I did notice that it's more like the planeswalker frame and I'm all for that. It sort of unifies the two styles a little bit more, which is cool. The only thing I can really complain about is the fact that the stamp sorta pokes into the text box, but that's pretty much it.
I'm surprised to see how many people liked those horrid future-shifted frames. thank god they used them just as a 1-set gimmick and I pray we never ever see them again. Planar-Chaos frames were awesome though, but again - they were needed as a 1 time thing (so far).
I really don't get what's all the fuzz about the holo stamp. yes, the smart move was using it as the set symbol, but as many have stated before me, 2 colors were needed (for rare/mythic) and they had to alter it for each set. Those problems are solvable as there are silver holograms and gold ones (just look at your credit cards..), but the costs probably wouldn't justify doing so.
I still honestly believe people should judge only when they hold a card from M15 in their hands, and not dismiss the changes before
