I really doubt its DFCs. MaRo has repeatedly said that there are logistical issues with adding them that makes them not worth it for random sets. If we get them again, they'll be a block theme.
Likewise there are a number of simple and logistical reasons that it won't be DFCs. They really don't fit the concept behind the CORE set at this stage. Add in the printing issues/logistics and it just doesn't make sense.
People mentioning the possibility of it being born of accommodating the new card frame/rare holo are probably on to something.
Some of you may think that you have made great mistakes in your lives, and perhaps you have. But let me ask you this.... did you ever play strip poker with two fat chicks and win?
I am not sure but I think they work 2 years ahead. for example when Dragons Maze came out they already had the sets done for 2 years after it.
Actually, I'm pretty sure that Design is 1 years ahead and Development is 1 year ahead. That would mean that they would still be working on it for a while after Dragon's Maze.
Total side note but I like how people are discussing running this over itself.
Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5
I think that those extra 20 cards will have to do with the "cool details" about the designers' credit space on M15 cards Aaron Forsythe told about in his article. My bet is that we will have 19 guest designers to feature one card of his/her choice, plus the YMTC one (designed by ~us~).
"We have changed the default from 60 uncommons to 80 uncommons for large sets as it makes limited play better. The default of large sets moving forward will be 269."
I myself am hoping that the additional cards in this set shall be a cycle of dual lands (ideally, the Shadowmoor/Eventide filter lands or a cycle based off Nimbus Maze), but regardless of what they are, having additional cards in a core set is certainly very awesome, in my mind.

But why is the normal number of cards in a set still an odd number? Would not most people find an even number to be more appealing, aesthetically? Why can the set not have 270 cards, rather than 269 card?

It has to do with the size of the sheets they use and how they print the cards. I don't know the full details, but printing math is apparently a very serious thing that often prevents them from printing more/less cards.
So much for the idea of Mythics being able to lower card count.
Don't worry, I'm sure in a couple of years they'll realize that the ratio of rares and mythics to uncommons is too small so they will have to up the number of rares and mythics per set.
A 40 dollar mythic rare would constitute a must have 4 of that goes in many decks.
Stats About Mythics
-Mythics are on average 40% rarer than pre-mythic rares
(old blocks about 200 rares, Mythic blocks 35+ mythics)
-They are printing more new cards a year not less
(about 665 now vs. 630 in most pre-mythic block)
-To drop the value of a rare by $1 a mythic must go up $2
-In a 3 year time span deck prices doubled. I am petitioning for the removal of mythic rarity. Sig this to join the cause.

This is a very smart observation. At a 1 in 6 ratio, they did seem sort of overwhelming in a set that was otherwise not really caring much about gold cards. 1 in 8 is the Mythic ratio, and it lines up rather nicely.
Also, print sheets are 121 cards big. For Rares/Commons, they use all 121 places. For Uncommons, there's a blank.

I hope that you are joking about that, because I actually believe that recent sets have had too many rares; for example, Theros had 60 uncommons and 53 rares, which is almost as many, as opposed to only 15 mythic rares. Why were there so many rares in that set? Would it not be more sensible to have the number of rares be only slightly higher than the number of mythic rares, rather than only slightly lower than the number of uncommons, to help keep rares special and valuable?

Specific rares are twice as common as specific mythic rares. It has to do with the printing. Print sheets are 121 cards (11x11). On the 'rare' sheet, each rare is printed twice and each mythic once.
Since the advent of mythic, all large sets have had the 53/15 split and all small sets have had a 35/10 split (excluding special card sheets like Innistrad's double-faced sheet and Dragon's Maze's land sheet). It seems unlikely that that will change going forward.
Also, keep in mind that each pack has 3 uncommons and 1 rare. Even if there were an equal number of rares and uncommons, rares would still be more rare than uncommons.
The fetches will never be printed at anything but rare.

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
Actually core sets are made *much* *much* closer to time than blocks, so they may have had the data.
It's only a single card, and they may have left a slot for it, but they managed to get Waste Not in there on pretty short notice.

The guildgates I can see happening. 3 colour lands, less so.
Or they'll be three of each color and five artifacts. Sounds simpler.
