A Little Tidbit
The seer looked confidaent with his dark inspiration. After all, no pain no gain.
Clearly the dark and confidaent are a reference to Dark Confidant. The inspiration could mean that this card was inspired by Dark Confidant. The no pain no gain indicates a card like Dark Confidant.
The weird spelling of confidaent makes me think that aether will be in the card name somewhere? Anyone else agree?
I could see something like a Heroic based tutor:
Some multicolor blue/black creature with heroic tutor for any card lose life equal to that cards casting cost. Probably grossly overpowered...
or maybe some like Heroic - Scry 1, draw a card loss life equal to its converted casting cost.
Imperial Seal and Demonic Tutor are too good and they have stated that they don't like tutors.
While I agree on that Imperial Seal won't be reprinted, Wizards doesn't dislike tutors, they dislike having too many tutors in standard because that leads to repetitive gameplay.
For what it's worth, Maro has said on his blog more than once that Dark Confidant's power level is completely acceptable for a Standard-legal set.
In fact, after a 20 seconds google search:
lowbeyonder asked: Was Dark Confidant ever on the reprint list for RTR block, or was he considered a bad fit? (Either in design or pulled by development as too good?)
We brought it up but he’s just too good for Standard.
Hm. I vividly remember the exact opposite statement, and I'm not looking through rose-tinted glasses (mostly because I don't like most of the Modern decks Bob is in).
Upside: Probably helped quash part of this discussion.
We already have duskmantle seer. What are honestly the chances of another card that's exactly the same in the same standard block?
It's probably more like a U/B inspiration that costs you life. Or it could be bull****.
It's probable that Duskmantle Seer didn't make as big a splash as the devs anticipated, so they're going Round 2. I hope not, though. Black Inspiration would be sweet.
Clearly the dark and confidaent are a reference to Dark Confidant. The inspiration could mean that this card was inspired by Dark Confidant. The no pain no gain indicates a card like Dark Confidant.
Yes. The "Dark", the "Confidant" and the "no pain no gain" points to something with a function similar to Dark Confidant. That's a given.
Yeah I remember Maro posting that dark confidant would be way too powerful for standard. It took players a while to realize how good it was when it first came out. I think its a safe bet that bob/Goyf/scm/Sfm are not getting a reprint in standard any time soon, if ever.
Seer Of Phenax 1B
Creature - Human Wizard
When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, scry 3, then put the top card of your library into your hand, you lose life equal to it's converted mana cost.
Erebos takes in hundreds of potentials until finally finding one that is not driven mad by his visions.

I do like these teasers a lot more than straight-up spoilers! Let's look at the riddle/hint again:
"The seer looked confidaent with his dark inspiration. After all, no pain no gain."
"Confidant" -- obviously a reference to Bob.
"Dark Inspiration" -- Does this refer to Inspiration, or the card that inspired "seer"? If the latter, then this is just another nod at a Bob-type card.
"Seer" -- I'm assuming Duskmantle Seer. If his "inspiration" is Bob, then we have the Bob mechanic hinted at doubly.
I don't think it's an instant or sorcery, mostly because the 'CMC = life loss' mechanic is used more on permanents as a downside to its repeatable nature. I'm pretty sure Ad Nauseam is the only card that actually does this, and there's not much design space to move CMCs or effects if that's our baseline. Also, WoTC tends to limit the low CMC 'life for cards' draw spells available, and we already have the respectable Read the Bones.
The theory that it's the UB god actually makes a lot of sense. After all, Thassa gives you a scry each turn, and many other gods give the player a sort of latent ability, like a vanguard. It also suits the "U/B Sylvan Library" analogue which MaRo mentioned, and Duskmantle Seer is UB. It's obviously not a straight up Bob reprint, with him being in MM. It could be another normal creature, but I don't think they'd try again so soon after Duskmantle Seer.

Wow, this looks quite believable, strong and perfectly fits the OP description.
So "seer" wasn't a reference to Duskmantle Seer but to Scry ability and this card's name.
Just gonna throw this out there, but this gives me more of a necropotence / yawgmoth's bargain vibe rather than a bob vibe. I do not expect those cards to be reprinted, but maybe something similar and probably ridiculously costed.
Well, I'd at least hope for a awesome reprint instead of a watered down version of a classic.

This seems about right. But if the name or ability is actually "Dark Inspiration" I'd guess it is a targeted effect for 3B:
Dark Inspiration - 3B
Instant
Target player reveals the top two cards of his or her library. That player loses life equal to each card's converted mana cost and puts them into his or her hand.
Seer Of Phenax 1B
Creature - Human Wizard
When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, scry 3, then put the top card of your library into your hand, you lose life equal to it's converted mana cost.

I don't believe in that card guess. The flavour is off. The god mentioned in the flavour text should probably be Phenax if the card name is correct (otherwise, does Erebos seriously hold auditions, then send promising guys to Phenax?). I'd also be willing to accept the flavour text as-is if the card name mentioned Erebos instead of Phenax.
Necropotence + gray merchant in standard. That would be the dumbest thing WotC could ever do this block or ever. Not to mention necropotence is one of the most powerful cards ever printed/no way in hell they'll ever reprint it.
Dark confidant one time? Seriously doubt it though. Hopefully it isn't underwhelming this go around like duskmantle seer.

Unless they're green tutors. Their stance of the subject is inconsistent at best.
