Yet another expansion symbol that's Set A + Set B.
The Return to Ravnica block symbols made sense because dragon's maze contained guilds that were introduced in both RTR and GTC.
In the Theros block, I don't feel this Theros + Born of the Gods vibe in Journey into Nyx. Having an expansion symbol that is a combination from the 2 sets before it doesn't mean it is entirely a bad thing. The good thing about it is that it means that WOTC won't run out of expansion symbol ideas anytime soon. They sort of ran out of ideas when expansion symbols don't mean anything anymore.

I was playing today and I had a card in my hand from Mirage. As I was looking at the palm tree, I thought to myself, when was the last time they actually made a set symbol that looked like something. For sometime they have all been abstract symbols, I hope there is a point were they go back to more identifiable images for set symbols.
I think the last time this was the case was the Lorwyn block, if not then, I would definitely say Time Spiral with its hourglass.
What about zendikar, where it was a Hedron? I think Scars forward the symbols have been very abstract. Even something like Innistrad we never did figure out if it was a crown, a trident and so on.

Hmmm... Matt Tabak is on the design team. Could this be significant?
I really hope he doesn't have a big role. I knew him for a long time while he was in Vegas and was never fond of him. it doesn't surprise me he has moved up in the world though as he was always a hypocritical sycophant and that is type of person who does well in business.
He has been a judge for as long as I have known him so being head rules guy made some sense. However he was never creative in any way while he was here in Vegas so it worries me that he is on the design team.

I agree with this. I always thought it was cool that I could identify Judgment by the scales symbol, Exodus by the bridge symbol, and Mercadian Masques by the mask symbol. Stuff like Dragon's Maze's set symbol and the entire Shards block's set symbols are completely unremarkable and unmemorable. Special releases like Commander and Planechase are even worse, though I'm not as mad at those because they aren't part of the traditional set releases and thus have less to go off on.
I'll even take Magic-specific symbols. Avacyn Restored's symbol was fine, as was New Phyrexia's, because those symbols were so present in the set and it made it easy to identify them.

]Another Wizards fanboy wants to glorify everything they do. Why can't you see that the game has gotten nothing but worse since the 1940's? At least in the 1800's we had spells that actually did something. I remember in 1492 when I first opened a pack of Alpha under the dim light of my oil lantern, I was at least inspired to travel to a new undiscovered land.!
Gatecrash pretty clearly had an arch, what with the capstone and all.
Second arch they've done as a set symbol. Well Technically Stronghold is a portcullis and Exodus is a bridge, but you get the idea.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Scars was a nut. Doesn't get more "object"-y than a nut. And Avacyn, Angel of Hope Restored's symbol is the Collar of Avacyn, Angel of Hope, not a torture device.
Kamigawa was the last real block to have all actual items. Ravnica had a building, filligree, and broken filligree. TSP block had an hourglass, a Planar Overlay, and the Eye of Sauron. Lorwyn had a leafy L elf ear or whatever, a rising sun, a bat wing elf ear scythe, and a setting sun. Alara block's were all symbolizing the state of the shards. Zendikar was three stages of the Hedrons opening. Scars had a nut and then faction symbols. Innistrad had a couple of mysterious things and Avacyn's Collar. RTR had a building, a gate, and a mashup. And now Theros seems to be an Altar, Xenagos' horns, and then both together.
On the topic of mashing symbols together...how is this something to complain about? The symbols all tie in together just like the sets do within the block. Makes perfect sesne.

Surely they could have given us *something*, though-

I think a majority of 2nd sets, in the past, have introduced something new, right?

This is seriously a question? Every small expansion set introduces new mechanics, building upon and retaining the mechanics from the large set.

I actually really enjoy this trend, and hope it continues.

Alara-block: Conflux is a shield. Shards is in principle a gem but it could be whatever.
Zendikar-block: Symbols are supposed to look like a hedron opening up. Kinda abstract.
Scar-block: Purely symbols of factions.
Innistrad: Avacyn Restored is the symbol of Avacyn, while it kinda resembles a medieval torture equipment - somewhat equivalent to this.
RTR: Purely symbols.
Theros: Could resemble a sort of Temple or Altar. Quite obvious a pillar with a circular arch.
