Jennifer came to Wizards of the Coast in 1995 as the editor for Ars Magica. She later moved to editing Magic: The Gathering until 1999, when she became an RPG editor. She has been involved with many games in the company, from writing world documents and flavor text, to playtesting various TCGs and board games, to occasionally trying her hand at RPG design. In January 2013, she returned to Magic, joining the creative team. A Classics major, she is very excited about Theros!

This thing is going straight into my legacy Pox deck. At that mana cost it can provide repeatable card advantage and the effect appears to stack with multiple ones out.

I knew they were going to push it as much as possible. CMC2 might actually make it constructed playable.
Yep. I remember the constructed powerhouse Liliana's Caress was at 1B and........wait..........>_>
Granted the cards that surround this card in an upcoming standard will be different than Caress but cards like these have a history of being marginal to unplayable. I can't predict the future with certainity but experience has thought me to be very underwhelmed and apathetic to cards like these.
For what it's worth, the opposite of evergreen is "deciduous" so I suggest we start using that from now on to refer to shroud, banding, islandhome, etc.
I'll test it in Quest for the Nihil Stone's place in my discard deck. That's as far as I'm willing to commit. Still think it's probably not going to be worth it.
well i'm keen to play it, eve if no-one else is. Will be a rare is my guess, but i could always hope black discard could be an archetype in limited with this at uncommon
With a community like this, who could blame them if they didn't?
Wizards really did there best with this card. The problem is alot of player feel discard is unfun. Thus, there will not be enough discard support to make this a playable standard card. In formats such as legacy this is not the case where there are decks that run 10+ discard spells.

It was only going to be playable at B. Have fun being played in... nothing. Not even EDH can make this good.
inb4 bad players claiming that they would put it in mono black pox in legacy.
In EDH you can use Windfall effects for value. Unfortunately it's inconsistent to build around something that isn't your commander in EDH so meh. It's not as bad as it could have been but it's still nothing special to me. Eldritch Rites...sigh...you will be missed.
In EDH casting a wheel of fortune with this in play will win the game for you singlehandedly assuming you don't draw crap. It reads an opponent. So wheel of fortune after this on turn 3 will net you upwards of 20 mana due to the lands each opponent discards.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
I wish my 4/4s with haste and first strike that acted as Goblin Warchiefs were better and didn't die to instants and overshadowed all other 4 drops in the format. And that they had evasion too, and some way to dodge wrath effects.
Waste Not, at 1B!

It seems like a heavy wheely red deck should run it.
