the deck is pretty easy to beat, lots of hate you could just stuff into your deck. counter spells like syncopate, negate, swans song, dimir charm, judge's familiar, and all the kill spells you can find.
rapid hybridization, as I don't think the creatures actually get to attack you. also, any bounce spell. The more I think about it, the more blue seems awesome vs this deck. add in some black so we can do more killing.

Doesn't that take a little of the fun out of it, deliberately building a deck to beat it?
The only real requirement of this format is that you need creatures with power. Evasion is not important... a limited deck against the hydra could be quite fun.
Q: Do I have to have a Standard deck to play against the Challenge Deck?
No. Any Magic deck will work. The Challenge Decks are optimized to work against Standard-format decks, but you can vary the difficulty so that it'll function against anything from a sealed deck to a hypercompetitive Legacy deck!
Neck Tangle
If there are five or more Heads on the battlefield, tap two of them and they don't untap during the Hydra's next untap step. Otherwise, reveal the top card of the Hydra's library and the Hydra cast that card.
I don't play constructed and you have to bring a Standard deck to do this. Why wouldn't you optimize your chances of beating it?
Because the challenge deck is there for fun, and usually it's kind of boring when your deck is specifically tuned to wreck your opponent. If that's what you find fun though, then of course, go for it.
What are the rules on milling? Does the hydra deck just ignore basic magic rules? It seems so with the lack of mana. So can I just ratchet bomb the board for 0 and insta win?

I would assume the rules would say that the Hydra gets the chance to re-grow it's destroyed heads before checking for victory. Otherwise any wrath effect is instant win.
Hmmm... My LGS said Standard only. I wonder if they will change their stance before the event.
I would show them the FAQ then. While Game day itself is standard, you are not required to play in Game day to face the hydra, nor are you required to face the hydra if you are in Gameday.

At my place u'll face the hydra with the deck u register for the T2 gameday tournament.
Sounds like a pretty bad standard deck LOL, I wish u a good luck for ur standard gameday tournament.
Perhaps thinking about a good standard deck that can compete well and also against hydras will be better.
What gave you the impression that I plan on playing Standard? I built that deck just for the hydra challenge, because that's all I'm doing at game day.
It kills 6 heads by turn 3 and half the heads in the deck by turn 4 if any grow back. This is in addition to gaining quite a bit of life from the heads and preventing related damage.

Why even fight the hydra if you're going to make it trivial?

Check out the thread for my cube if you have the time, and tell me how terrible it is.
Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)

I'll answer for him. Cause when you go to the event, you're doing it to win and gain the prize?
If I want to have fun and give my opponent a chance, I'll do it in casual at home when I buy the Hydra deck.
Tournaments/Events are not just for fun, but are there to exploit and reap the benefits and prizes. If I have a chance at $100 prize, I'm not going to bring a "fun" deck when I can gain money or something is worth money like a prize.
Jason Belmonte doesn't go to a bowling event and go, eh I'll just bring a cool looking plastic ball. hahaha

The only prize for beating the hydra deck is a card that's only used against the hydra deck.
The Hydra deck also pilots itself; you can play against it solo with no one else on the other end.
If that means anything to you, great, but I don't think it's the type of prize that you're expecting.
I personally plan on just having fun with it with my Boros Batallion deck, as that's the whole point of the Hero's Path. Having fun with the set in a new way.

Yeah, I read wrong, I thought they had power. Well, that does it! There are probably faster ways of killing the thing, though.
And I'm assuming it's alright to just borrow someone's The Avenger for this, correct? Because I didn't get to play Black at the PR, just R/U/G.
Are you sure? It's crappy cell-phone footage.

The Hydra deck also pilots itself; you can play against it solo with no one else on the other end.
Which is also part of a 9 card/step requirement to get you what I believe will be a much bigger prize.

That "prize" is getting your name on the Hall of Heroes page on the MTG website.
