Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
why? Everybody knows its going to happen eventually...
Also feel free to read the article. The opening line says:
"we are striving to make available on Magic Online every relevant Magic card in existence for the Vintage format."
When I saw the article, I thought they'd finally done it. I thought they had FINALLY abolished the reserve list. But no, instead they are just rubbing it in our faces that they have the power to make a great decision that would make so many people happy, at the small cost of upsetting a handful of people who don't contribute jack to the game; but instead that they choose not to.
That list going away EVENTUALLY is a 100% inevitability. They would make so much money out of the reprints it would allow them. It's just that they are choosing not to, for reasons so absolutely idiotic that I refuse to acknowledge them as "reasons".
For what it's worth, the opposite of evergreen is "deciduous" so I suggest we start using that from now on to refer to shroud, banding, islandhome, etc.
Personally, I think it's exciting. No one plays vintage locally and it's a cool opportunity to play dailies with others around the world. Who care's if it's not redeemable. ME and ME2 were not redeemable.
I assume this will mean no Modern Masters 2 next year.
and what would make you think that? Considering this is a MODO only release, and last I checked Masters Edition didn't effect paper releases in any way shape or form...

He means that WotC probably chose that point in time because there isn't a release window for anything else...which means no MM2 around that time. Which we kind of knew anyway.
Wizards manages to be truly mindblowlingly stupid yet again. They said they would release the power 9 by the end of this year. They only need to program 9 cards, all with incredibly mundane effects; I imagine it could be accomplished in an hour. But instead of following through on their promise, they arbitrarily decide to delay it by 6 months for what appears to be no reason whatsoever.

Actually that bit was already done...last year. The Power 9 were in the Cube in December 2012.
As much as I liked powered cube, Vintage masters doesnt get me super excited. I would have much rather had a full season of modern masters even if its the same exact set card for card.
I might try a draft of this but i won't be doing nearly as many as I did for MMA.
I feel like the success of this product could be helpful for getting rid of the Reserve List.
I came here just to say the same. Wizards doesn't like the Reserve List - they would like to get rid of it, but can't take the risk unless they can be sure this move would be really popular.

It is more than 9 cards and a limited format is also coming with the release, which means there has to be some development behind it. It isn't just pick cards and go... don't be silly.
As for the release, $6.99 seems incredibly steep for digital product, I would rather sink that money into digital product that is at least redeemable.
Now that I think about it, I don't think I have touched my Vintage deck in some 6+ months. I guess this gives me a chance to actually play it somewhere. *Shrug*
Stepping stone to bringing a lot of these cards back?
I think they might be considering a new TYPE of card... something a level up from Legendary. You can only have a single Legend on the table at any time. If you add a new CARD TYPE to these - such that you are only allowed to have ONE of /cardtype/ [we'll call it 'UNIQUE' for want of a better name] per deck.
For example- a Pearl Mox might have the following listed on the card type line:
Unique Artifact
The 'Unique' becoming a label tagging the card as a special type preventing you from having more than one Unique card type in your deck, though not preventing an opponent from having one [unlike Legends - you can have 4 Legends in your deck, but only one on the table].
This would allow WOTC to 'reprint' cards from the Restricted List - not by changing their functionality - but by changing their card type [by introducing a new card type subset]. This would also open the door to creating a whole new class of cards allowing new designs that may include cards that have been held back because they might be too powerful.
Hey - a lot of cards are too powerful with more than one on the table... we call them Legends. Perhaps this might be a stepping stone to seeing their return in print? It certainly wouldn't break WOTC's pledge to the after market, because these would not be strict reprints [at least this would get them around their own self proclamation].
MEHHHH...Unless they go Phantom I have no interest in spending tons of cash on that thing. If I can't have those cards IRL, there is absolutely no point to having them online. Legacy's as far as I go.

I doubt that would happen anyway. Modern Masters 2 will likely be in 2015.

Even if they did abolish the reserve list, can you imagine what the cost per pack would be? Would it be $9.99 for a 15 pack with a chance for a Mox?

Food for thought.
