I'm seeing tons of posts like "OMG, this guy is broken! If you have (two or more cards that each cost 4 mana) its a combo!"
Yes, like dozens of other commanders in the format, he has combos with cards.
I personally think this guy is an excellent counter to ramp dominant deck construction. You could make a cool multiplayer commander deck whose curve tops out at 5 and without having to clog 8+ slots of your deck with ramp.
What some are calling "Breaking a fundamental rule" is what I call "Excellent use of design space" and I am thrilled to see folks working outside the box to keep the format fresh and exciting.
As for Duel Commander... Perfect, another totally ridiculous U/W general in the format, exactly what we needed.
This looks like to be an excellent Commander. I have been waiting for a Commander such as this for sometime. While I wish she was an angel rather than a bird, I'll leave it up to the point that this thing can go the mile. Too bad she isn't black, because that would be an excellent Ninja commander ability.
Why arent WotC covering these spoilers on their homepage?
Because Commander's "home site" is mtgcommander.net, so giving them some of the big "bombs" to give out for it makes sense in their marketing strategy. Commander is sort of a player invented format, more of a "judge invented format" but I digress, that had a centralized system before WotC took direct production interest in it. The compromise was a name change, and then to just stand back and let the system continue unabashed.
I mean, probably, in another 10-20 years whenever the Rules Council system breaks down I could see WoTC having a more direct influence on the format. However, for now the "Founders" of EDH/Commander are given the golden ticket so as not to steal thunder probably. It's a marketing point of view.
Either way, it supports different communities and raises their advertising revenue since WotC's site is tied directly to MTG and other game sales. This helps to support financially other sites in their feedback cycle and create buzz for their products.
It's an old tactic, and frankly something WoTC has to do in the 21st century.

I'll probably be replacing Phelddagrif in my edh cube with this guy. Can't wait to see what they come up with for Naya ([c=rith, the awakener]Rith is really garbage, especially when compared with the out-of-my-price-range Hazezon)!
i dont like this thing purely because it flies in the face of the commander tax. its a big **** you we dont like this rule and we cant change it so we're going to work around it completely.
Intersting card, but I think it's dumb that they gave it a way to bypass the commander costs and being able to get countered. It seems that WotC doesn't like the commander tax and is trying to figure out ways around it.

Yea and Explore is them showing how much they hate single land drops. Gotta work around those rules.

Why in the world would WOTC hate something that brings $$ into their pockets?
They dont so shaddup with that crap.
I love this guy he does something new, which to me is my number one EDH general point of interest.

Just because it brings $$ into their pockets, doesn't mean they like all aspects of EDH. They could feel that once the game hits a certain point of a general being killed, it's 'not fun' for someone paying so much for a commander without some benefit.

This is incredibly presumptuous. What basis do you have for this beyond "I don't like the card so I think WotC hates EDH".
People, you need to explain yourselves rather then just making claims.

I begin to think people post before they think.
You're just now figuring this out?
But yes, it's no more secretly hating the commander tax than Asceticism means they secretly hate the targetting rules. It's a card they felt would be more interesting if it had a way around the commander tax. Seeing as it's an interesting effect that's not going to break the game if it costs 4 a pop, I'm gonna have to say it's probably a fun card that will be interesting to play with. After all, staff of domination hasn't exactly broken commander, and it's very similar in using up 4 mana to untap something. Yeah, there's a slightly wider range of things that can be untapped, but that's the difference between four generic and three specific.
Wow, I am very impressed with this card, for its powerful abilities. I do wish that it could be a 3/3, rather than a 2/3, but it definitely would have been too powerful in that form. I definitely wish to use him in my blue/white/green deck, but I am not certain that I can make room for him in it, and I certainly do not wish to replace Jenara, Asura of War as the general of that deck, which Derevi is clearly meant to be.
I do find it interesting that Derevi does not have an ability that increases with the amount of mana spent to cast him, as do Jeleva and Prossh; perhaps the other Bant-colored general shall have that ability?
Hopefully, there shall be further previews for this set, since it shall be released slightly less than a month from now, and I am very excited to see what other new cards shall be in this set.

I wasn't being serious with the last part. It is pretty irritating how poor people are at 1) reading cards and 2) expressing themselves.
Seems really really really good. Forever recursive in Commander, evasion, and a pseudo-temporary removalish ability. She loves equipment! I want this deck for sure.
Am I missing something? How is this uncounterable???
Activated ability instead of casting it. You can still stifle the trigger, but who runs those abilities in EDH?

Both Voidslime and Trickbind are pretty awesome in EDH.

Produce lots of tokens, untap your token producers with your combat tricks. Finest Hour. lots of over-run effects.
I think Derevi is a great way to up the potency of a Trostani deck etc.

Nope, the first thought is that WotC are a bunch of jerks who want to upend the format via subervise methods!
