I would interprete protection from player like this:
gives hexproof to targeted instants and sorceries but does not give hexproof to acitvation of things like Icy Manipulator or ETB effects like Acidic Slime because in all these cases the source is the permanent and not the player.
Prevents all damage from global effects controlled by the player like Pyroclasm.
I dont understand why this can't be blocked, creatures block it, not players.
You would interpret it wrong.
This has protection from anything cast by that player, and protection from anything controlled by that player. That includes creatures, that Icy Manipulator, and the Acidic Slime. It also means that player's creatures can't block it. Damage dealt by anything that player controls is prevented.
Seems good in legacy stoneblade and maybe fish too. Still dies to edicts/lily, wraths/terminus/pyroclasm, deed/ee, and stuff like golgari charm. Not as good as giest against combo, but better against creature decks, and better at holding equipments.
Also, the OP doesn't have the exact wording. It is an "As it EtB..." effect (like phyrexian Revoker or clone) and thus cannot be responded to.

How it dies to Pyroclasm?

this merfolk is nuts . if you don't have a FoW when this is played then you are in trouble
you can still handle with other merfolks (lords) but this one is a fast clock . For pros and other high skilled players will not worry to much with it but every other player will soffer a pain in the ****
Maybe in EDH it will not be that good ( unless you are playing against a aura deck ( maybe zur)) but yeah a guy that is a clock and can deal with alot of things but you know wraths effects are very common in EDH
It's legacy legal the day of BOM and the day before Legacy World Champs. Good luck finding whichever deck has this card in it on release day.

If you couldn't tell I hate greedy blue decks.
No since it is "AS ~ enters the battlefield" this guy goes off the stack with a player chosen.
Question is, in fact, if it's really "as" or "when"
It's not when, or it would say "when". It functions and is in fact, worded exactly the same as, say Adaptive Automaton. I don't see why people are having trouble with this. If it's a translation question, I can assure you it will say "As" in English.
Am I correct that attacking into this guy with a creature with Wither would still not kill it? The damage prevention from protection would prevent the addition of the -1/-1 counters?
Attacking into it with flanking would kill it though?

yes.
Wither (Infect) damage is still damage, so it will get prevented, and no counters added.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. It might be better for Legacy than EDH, really. Vialing him in would also make him uncounterable, if the fish player needed some reach.
In EDH, 3 damage is still peanuts unless it's 1v1. For abusing combat triggers, it's better to just suit up a cheapo 1-3 unblockable guy, since swinging turn 5 is a bit late. If your'e between this and Phantom Warrior or something, I guess he'd get the nod based on utility.

EDIT: not pyroclasm
I guess they'll be updating the comp rules when this set is released.

Geist be damned, we need something that can't even be blocked or stopped by creatures. Make every game a race.
Thanks wotc!
Wraths do, pyroclasm doesn't. Protection prevents it from being targeted, enchanted, damaged, or blocked by things that player controls.
Wrath works. Pyroclasm does not.
Protection still does what it always did.
It cannot be Damaged, Enchanted/Equiped, Blocked or Targeted by anything that player controls.
everything else works fine.
There are no triggers on this card.

they explained what it does via reminder text in the card.
I guess they're updating the comprehensive rules to take that into consideration.
Damage
Equipment/Enchantment
Block
Target
The only thing that is off-the-wall is the source, in this case, target player rather than a specific card or a colour
