We have a creature type called "Advisor", which is sort of an strategist or leader, not a soldier or a warrior.
Except an advisor advises someone in a higher position. This dude is obviously the one in charge. Also, why they got rid of the Lord creature type is beyond me. It just sounds so cool.

Yeah, Lord should be back, Human Soldier Lord, Elf Shaman Lord... I mean... we have Enchantment Aritifact God already...
Not every creature in the chain of command is a soldier/warrior/barbarian, we have Advisor, Cowards, Survivors, Flagbearers... I dont mind more type diversity, its not like we are playing tribals decks anyway.
Hmmm...I've been in the market to build a new Esper deck and was hoping for a good general for it. This guy isn't really it...I was hoping for a general with a bit more kick to it. Though he is interesting and I can see why people like him.
Generals this time around don't seem quite as cool as the wedge ones were to me, yet there are several legendaries left to be spoiled. I'm hoping there's one or two that fit my tastes.
So basically, if you give commands and you have a sword, you're a soldier.
If you give commands and you don't have a sword, you're an advisor.
oh, and if you have an axe, you're a
I mean, feel free to do a type search on advisors. It wouldn't have been a place Oloro couldn't have been concepted, but Oloro, as he exists, seems to fit more with Darien than, say, Teysa.
It's important to remember the in Magic, creature types are typically broad. So yes, soldier means the guys on the ground. It also refers to the generals, and pretty much everybody in between. Look at Odric, Master Tactician for an example of someone who's obvious somewhere higher up in the command chain, but still of the creature type soldier. Heck, Anax and Cymede are soldiers, despite being King and Queen. So unless you're diagreeing with the creature types of every leader type who's been typed as a soldier, I'd have to say that yes, tactics can be important for the creature type.
It is a broad classification, and while strategy is certainly an essential aspect of war (I can't tell you how many times I practiced Battle Drill 1A), not every soldier concerns himself with resource management on a macro level. I knew many great soldiers when I was still serving, but I wouldn't say that the 'greatest' were disposed to sieges or wars of attrition.
Flossed, but someone was concerning themselves with that matter, right? Cause as stated "Soldier" creature type seems to cover anyone in a militaristic power structure from the grunts to the generals (which, in Troloro's case, he's a General).
Which is probably part of why the Lord creature type was shelved, it didn't add anything specifically to the "Lord" (All other 'Creature type' you control gets X), and usually the art, card name, and effect carried the flavor of 'guy in charge.'

Sorry. I work at a school, and the fire alarm went off. Guess I pressed submit. It's fixed now.

I have no problem with Oloro being a soldier. My problem is with the notion that resource management is somehow the litmus test for being a great one.
However it would have been a strange commander if he was to be "true Esper" and gain artifact. Red would suddenly become a pretty annoying opponent when it comes to artifact-removal.
Well, it's not like the other Commanders are from Alara either. People are playing Naya Zoo in Standard when we've got one foot in Ravnica and the other in Theros, aren't they?
I will be delighted to get my hands on him. I regret not being able to play during Shards block, especially because I missed out on all the cool Esper artwork.

Apologies, that wasn't my intention. But that the logistics are as valuable as brute force. Which a portion of the thread seemed to be omitting, stating that the lack of brute force in the card's design.
I'm really pumped about this general like no other. This is gonna be great in a deck abusing Exort, gain life and big mana pools in general. I need a cabal coffer+allIsSwamp land now.

Me too. I've resisted building a pillowfort/bleeder deck for a while now. This guy broke my resolve. He's just too perfect for it.
Came up with this list of nice cards. The idea is to build mana, control the board, be untouchable and draw lots of cards to control with. Also either kill with attrition or some Exquiste Blood combo.
God I hate this card. It's not UBW, it's WG. This guy is a giant and should be GWR, maybe even just GW. The fact that they made this guy life gain and BUW is ridiculous. What's next a RUG that is all about milling? Or a WRB all about token making?
Isn't WRB tokens a pretty standard archetype? I know it was during Innstrad.

If I am playing WUB I am playing either control or artifact. Granted this guy work in control. But there are probably better commanders for a control deck. In EDH, you can win without touching your opponent's life total.
Yeah, green repeatedly draws cards for 1 mana and drains life from your opponents all the time.

Shocking as it may be for you, the role of colors can be expanded at the discretion of Wizards, and it has been done.
He is a control general. White gains you the life, Blue draws you the cards, and Black causes your opponent's to lose life. And while there are better control generals, they're probably quite expensive compared to what this guy will be. Furthermore, extra life never goes amiss in any game - with life as an expendable resource you can pay to draw cards, reanimate creatures, or do other solid things.
Giants have classically been represented in other colors, yes, but so what? Until Innistrad, Vampires had mostly been Mono-Black creatures with a few extremely rare exceptions, and now we have vampires notably in B/R and W/B. Should they have just stayed as they were even when there was space for change?

Gaining life causes you to draw cards and make opponents lose life. That's the most WUB thing I've ever seen.
The creature type can be argued, but that can be waved off as flavor.
Anybody underestimating this Commander will regret it. He's a house.

Generals are not generally templated as advisors. See Darien, King of Kjeldor; Lovisa Coldeyes; Jor Kadeen.

Not every Esper legend has to be about artifacts, especially if they don't come from the "Esper" Shard of Alara.
I like this guy. He does something even when you're not using him. Lifegain on each upkeep would have been awesome, but too powerful, I guess.
While Esper was in fact the shard of Alara that was WUB, it is used as a general term to describe any deck/general in those colors.
I will be delighted to get my hands on him. I regret not being able to play during Shards block, especially because I missed out on all the cool Esper artwork.
Esper is referring to the colors not the Shard world itself so you can let go of that fear
