Blue is the artifact color. White is the equipment color. Black is the only odd one on Esper. But Black isn't opposed to creative use of artifice, it will use anything in order to further its goals.
Admittedly, this is long before my time, but there was a lot of Phyrexian mono black artifact stuff way back when, wasn't there?
]Another Wizards fanboy wants to glorify everything they do. Why can't you see that the game has gotten nothing but worse since the 1940's? At least in the 1800's we had spells that actually did something. I remember in 1492 when I first opened a pack of Alpha under the dim light of my oil lantern, I was at least inspired to travel to a new undiscovered land.!
Woohoo, this guy brings back memories of the days when I had my words of worship / well of lost dreams deck. Needless to say, those two cards would be auto-includes for me in this guy's deck.
I have to agree though that the blue in his cost seems a little restrictive. I know it's there for his drawing capability, but there aren't too many ways to gain life in blue to take full advantage of this guy last I checked (only 10 results when searching "gain life" for blue in all of magic's history; lifetap seems pretty awesome with this though)
I think he will be popular just because of the fact he does something for nothing. That's the biggest upside I've seen in a long time. Untargetable, unremovable, +2 life each turn. Like Vanguard. I kind of hope we see more of these "Ability from Command Zone" Generals. It definitely adds a new dimension to the game.
In a weird, picky sort of way, the overall card should feel more blue to me. I mean, it is blue, with ally colors being black and white. Not white lifegain with some black and blue life loss and card draw. However, like I said that's just me being picky!
I just noticed that the Esper deck has the black (purple) packaging. This is inconsistent with the Grixis deck, which has blue packaging, taking the color of the leftmost symbol in the shard group, while this one takes its color from the rightmost symbol. This would seem to imply, to me, that the packaging reflects the "primary color" of each deck, rather than just being a simple pattern like the first set of Commander precons.

I assumed that when the packages were spoiled, actually. Is that unprecedented? Was the general expectation center color = defining colour?

Well, I would have initially expected the packaging color to match the "central" color of the shard, just as the first set matched the "vertex" color of the wedge, regardless of the actual composition of the decks. Counterpunch, for example, had black packaging but was primarily green. When we only knew Jeleva's packaging, I then assumed the packaging for each would match the first mana symbol in the shard, but considered that it could be reflecting the deck contents as well. This new info strongly points toward the last possibility.
Seems fun to play with and I won't mind playing against it either. Lifegain is a bit underrated I feel, since it doesn't DO a whole lot on it's own, but I might just be a little crazy in the head for silly interactions. =P
Hmm, probably gonna make this my new Lifegain build, since my current B/W seems to have taken issue with something I've done to it.
If not, I feel like I just want to swap out my Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts with him and add some islands and stuff to throw people off.
Wait... Just having him in the command zone makes any one land you play a library of Alexandria ??? Downside being upkeep with upside lifegain/drain and doesn't require exactly 7 in hand. Also can draw more obviously sinking mana with themed lifegain.
Did I read it correctly ? Keep him in command zone and at beginning of upkeep use opening land as pseudo library?
Seems very powerful and I'm loving these cards.

He can't use his draw trigger unless he's in play.
Recent discussions here and elsewhere have made it clear that there seems to be a group of players who consider blue and control synonymous, as if they somehow started playing a game with four identical and "bad" colors that do nothing interesting because they just "turn men sideways" and then true, glorious blue, the only thinking person's color.

I like this card quite a bit, but it is lacking something that the first two generals had. I thought it was really clever that the generals benefited from interactions with the command zone, but did not have to be a commander in a commander game to get the full benefit from them Oloro and the Bant commander both mention the command zone explicitly and that to me is a bit too restrictive. I did not mind it the first time around with Command Tower because there are loads of lands that can make lots of colors of mana, but with legendary creatures I wish they had found a way to not mention the command zone.
That is a bit of a nit-pick, as both of the spoiled commanders are pretty neat, but...
I suppose I can just play him without U, but it's not the same.
I like him a lot, and I don't think him being part U is bad design or anything,
I've just *really* been wanting something like this in straight (B/W)

Yep, Old Phyrexia was huge in the artifact deparment. New Phyrexia is too, but they're a bit more colorful.

He specifically favors Commander, too. See here and here. Neat guy.
Where do you get aggro from?
Not asking to be combative, I'm just curious.
I'm officially proposing we retire the word "insane" from the MtG vocabulary.

But he's a bad body with no combat-relevant abilities. Creature type only means so much.

Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)

Totally. I feel like I would be impressed by this guy's art if Vish-y hadn't already called dibs on this pose.
Also, I am not impressed. This guy isn't my style of play at all. But it sure is nice to finally have some previews for this new release.
