If only used to grab a fetch, then it's strictly worse than Farseek because you still have to pay one life to crack the fetch again. Getting another Wasteland/Stripmine is pretty nifty, but I'm not so certain that's powerful enough in Legacy to warrant a spot.
This card is in my old custom design files as a hybrid spell. I guess it makes sense to print it here, since it would be a dead card the vast majority of the time in any normal expansion.
Nice, fair, straightforward card, total core set material.
I dislike the idea of supplemental reprints being put in Core Sets, especially this card - nobody runs land destro in Standard so it would be dead for everyone who pulls one. They put out enough Duel Decks that they could afford to stick this in there.

Farseek puts the land into play tapped.
If the 1 damage was that important of a drawback, the shocklands wouldn't be the staples they are.
if wasn't for all the grave hate and Deathrite Shaman in Legacy, this card would be a whole lot better than most ramp cards.
It's still decent, but probably won't see much play because of that.

If a fetch is "strictly worse" than a dual/shockland, then why do people play them?
This card rocks on way too many levels. Its ability. Its cost. Its John Avon-ness. And it has flavor text from a cool character from the coolest plane ever: Alara!
Unfortunately every try hard from Sacramento to Shanghai preaches from the top of their 27 lands + Mana Reflection that Tooth and Nail and Time Stretch are fine to play in the same turn but Armageddon is unfair.
Has anyone mentioned what a blatant color pie violation this is? Since when does green get to steal? (yes, I'm aware of Gilt-Leaf Archdruid and consider that a mistake, too)

Well, if Green is going to steal, it might as well steal lands. Although I consider White to be the best at stealing land...:cool2:
Still bad for the same reasons Vile Rebirth is bad. A conditional card (that's dead if the conditions aren't met) needs to offer a nice reward to be worth it, and needs to be worth it late game. A 2/2 flash on T8 is unimpressive, even for 1 mana, same with an uncommon manland T8.
The only way I can see this maybe work is in a set like Odyssey.
The deck that runs it, runs it fully for his own lands. The effect it can have on the opponent is value-town as well. Vile rebirth, at best, nets you a 2/2, which does nothing to end games. This nets you, at best, another activation of a legendary land. Gaea's Cradle is the obvious one here.
I can't help but feel like everyone saying this is playable in legacy doesn't even play competitive Legacy.
A low impact spell is NOT the way to gain an advantage at any point in the game. Deathrite Shaman is VERY popular. It blanks this card completely, not that this card isn't a blank card 90% of the time. There are too many "what ifs" to say this card can take your opponent's lands. This doesn't do anything to further your board state (ramping ONE land is child's play in legacy). Card is just bad in Legacy.
Now, this card may be a fine inclusion in other formats like Modern or EDH, but lets face it... Legacy

I don't think Wizards see it as stealing... Although green does have a minute history of stealing. It seems more ramping/coolness factor. Sometimes flavor or mechanical flavor "outweighs" the color pie. It's not an outright violation, since we all need lands (GTFO Landless Dredge/1-land Charbelcher) to play magic anyways.
This not a "theft" affect, I don't consider green going through random graveyards searching for a land as such. Gilt-Leaf Archrdruid is a much more blatant theft since you are directly taking all the lands from an opponent. In most cases the lands you grab with this would likely be just fodder for things like Deathrite Shaman, not many decks have ways to get back lands from the graveyard.
I mean do people really consider Animate Dead or Rise From the Grave a "theft" affect because it can also take dead things your opponent used to control?
I am very impressed with the design of this card, and I wonder why it has not made its way into a current set. I have a feeling they are going to give it a bit of a trial run, then see about reprinting it later on.
That said, Modern would really like to have this card available; Legacy is a different story.
In Legacy, if you are taking the time to play this card, you are probably not going to win. What, exactly, are you ramping into in Legacy for which Veteran Explorer + Cabal Therapy does not do a much better job?
