I don't think Master will see play in modern. He's too slow, and not a lord. If he produced merfolk, then yes, he'd see play. As it is, not so much.
I am excited for his possibilities in standard. I could totally see a U/r Tempo/Midrange Merfolk deck forming. Red splash could be for Dynacharge (incredible with master), Magma Jet, or maybe Young Pyromancer.
Wizards print good rares, players complain about cash grab. They print underwhelming rares, players complain that the cards suck. They spoil the best cards first, players complain about the insane prices of preorders. They spoil the meh cards first, players complain that this is the worst set ever.
So. I think I understand now.
As far as these forums are concerned, WotC can never do anything good because:
Card that is new and probably good = "pushed"
Card that is new and probably bad = "EDH/casual fodder"
Card that is a reprint = "lazy"
Card that is a better version of an older card = "power creep"
Card that is a weaker version of an older card = "worthless"
Worst case you get an X/X for 3, and it's black so it dodges some removal (while weak to others) but most importantly, if you bestow it (to say, a Lifebane Zombie?) then it becomes a critter again after the guy its attached to dies, only even bigger!
Not sure if I'd do 4-of, but it's easily a good 3-of. Sets up some nice devotion as well for the Merchant.
Worst case it's a 0/0 and dies/can't be cast profitably. Aside from the fact that you need to find a way to set it up to do anything, there's stuff like Scavenging Ooze and Deathrite Shaman in the format that love to eat creatures in the yard. It's a shame, the art on howler is fantastic no doubt.
Well, today was underwhelming. So few spoils. Merfolk guy has the possibility of being quite good, but he's very weak to removal and you don't want to be attacking with him. He would be best in a tempo deck with stuff like Deputy of Acquittals, I think.
Master of the Waves seems totally awesome. Those tokens will trigger all sorts of 'enter the battlefield' shenanigans, so right there you could create insane value with a single Beck having been cast, or deal some massive damage if you have Purphoros out. Of course, just making dudes and beating face works too.
Nighthowler has rad art and might be one of the more playable Bestow critters we've seen so far. Right now, ya, there's Scavenging Ooze to deal with, but it won't be in Standard forever.
Pyxis of Pandemonium is one of the cooler casual cards they've printed so far. Someone is going to do very evil things with it. You can just tell.
Yeah, don't think new merfolk would fit with rest of them. Now if his tokens were merfolk and he lorded as normal merfolk lord I would find a way, but that would be bah-roken from one side and still hard to cast from another - and have really hilarious flavor.
So instead of saying that if the Master of Waves leaves the battlefield, sacrifice all your Elemental tokens, they come up as 1/0 creatures. I guess it's a way at simplify the approach of the game like they did with the new wording on the whale etc.
Or you people could stop playing that card. It really isn't that freaking great. I have NEVER had an issue with it, and that's including the game I chose to doom blade my opponents entire play set on their turn. It's not a good card in standard, and I would go so far as to say it's subpar, but everyone keeps throwing them at me, so clearly somewhere along the line people got the idea in their head that it's good because it's a 50 dollar card.
I'm pretty sure that there's not really much that the black card does for voice though. Even in junk sac, which is already losing a pretty hefty chunk of it's core, voice isn't going to gain much out of the aura effect.
Won't happen. A lord for Elementals in a colour that Voice isn't atop of a devotion requirement that again, isn't in Voice's colours at 4 mana (1 more than the average "lord" cost) is not going to shoot up Voice's price.

I don't get why so many of you like the merfolk guy so much, its just a strictly worse huntmaster of the fells. The only card that works well with the guy up to now is Nightveil Specter, and that card is far from being tourney playable.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.

Thessa and Master of Waves give you a big incentive to play Nightveil Specter.
With so much synergy in this block (probably more we don't know yet), I can easiely see it making an appearence in new standard.
Nightveil Specter is even in most sideboards of Esper Control block decks, so it can't be too bad.

I must be missing some in-joke here with this comparison.
The only things Master of Waves even has in common with Huntmaster of the Fells are a card type, a converted mana cost, and the phrase, "creature token onto the battlefield." Otherwise, the cards are about as different as two cards can possibly be. I can't conceive of a deck where the two cards would be interchangeable. If used to their maximum potential in two different decks, their optimal board impact is completely different. And, they'll never be Standard-legal at the same time.
So, you can't say "strictly" anything about the two cards.
Master of Elementals is the best card spoiled so far (except the obviously good utility rares- Thoughtseize, Chained to the Rocks, Sylvan Caryatid). Wouldn't be surprised to see this as the chase mythic of the set.
People are getting too hung up on making this work with something. How insane is this if you have a card which offers two devotion symbols on it on the field? This card is a reasonable rate at no other blue symbols on the field with no synergy. You have to do very little to make this card very good.
It's sort of ridiculous to me that it's currently the cheapest mythic in the set to preorder. That'll change in a day or two.
Needed a creature to replace Splinterfright and Boneyard Wurm and i got it!!
The bestow cost isn't even high, and its cheaper than Lhurgoyf. Now I just need a third Jarad and i will be set.
It's all about the flavor. He's the master of the waves, he summons a bunch of waves but when he dies the waves fall back into the ocean. It's perfect in my book.
Flavour is good, but for a view in constructed, its not too great if all dies with the master, value wise.
As a casual deck blue/red might be quite a thing, as we have this master, pyromancer and the red god that all work good with tokens and cheap spells.
Potential. Even if there's not enough devotion granting cards right now, who knows what the rest of theros, born of the gods, journey into nyx, m15 and the huey block will bring? Maybe elemental will get supported as a tribal type.
I am very happy for you that you can enjoy a new blocks spoiler card because the next block might make it good.
Can't believe that anyone thinks that Pyromancer + Master is synergy. Yes, they both produce elementals. But read both cards and think about the decks they fit in for one second.
Just devote a little bit of worship to Master and he'll reward you with insane power.

are you kidding me ??? the green one have much better art than the original one.

You know as well as anyone does that that is anti-synergistic and unintuitive. No one needs to play VoR anyway.
Pyxis is going to spell pronunciation trouble.
Nighthowler is miserable, particularly with the GY hate available and the GY hate being played.
