Wouldn't be a complete set unless they waste a rare slot with utter jank.
I guess knowledge pool and warp world weren't crappy enough that they had to print this. These are the rares you open and cringe and wish you had rather spent your money on a root canal.
I too have a bad habit of spending money on Magic boosters when I require necessary dental surgery.
Bestow is reminding me a lot of a reversed haunt. I love the image of killing a graveyard-fuelled enemy only to see a Nighthowler rise from its remains and come at me again.
That merfolk is pretty sick!
Wish he cost one less, but I can't really complain. He'll be a sick finisher, or he'll at least spit out a bunch of chump blockers while fliers finish off aggro.
In Modern, this guy is already dodging Bolt, Helix, Electrolyze, Pyroclasm, Galvanic Blast, and Redcap all day. The 4 CMC price tag adds on protection from Abrupt Decay. This guy basically says "Hi, you have one turn to kill me" when he lands, and that's a tall order when red is out of the picture. Path gets him, true. So does Wrath and Verdict. But most decks are going to have a major problem handling this guy in one turn. Awesome card overall.
The first night almost always has a lot more than other nights until the full spoiler is released. We should get a few more from 3rd party articles throughout the next day.
I actually think this may see play in Gx Tron for modern. Most of the deck is permanents anyways and they can easily hit 7 mana. Might be nice to just barf out everything at once.
You may also want to check out "Top Control" in Modern Deck Creation for a far less fun use of it
Err...... while Master of the Waves does have anti-red, that 1 toughness and the fact his tokens have 0 toughness normally is a bit troublesome..... But okay, the anti-red certainly helps.
The Box is ok, I guess. Sort of a Helvault which is a bit random.
And the Nightholwer looks pretty sick...... you bestow, then when the bestowed creature dies, well, that's a +1/+1 for the howler...
Article seemed to imply that he thinks Master of Waves works in Modern Fish. I'm not sure I agree, but between this and Thassa there is certainly a lot of testing to be done. This card would definitely slot into merfolk if it was 3cmc, but at four it's pushing an average merfolk deck's curve.
For standard, it's just a shame his trigger is so opposite to Young Pyromancer's.
He should still have a chance of seeing play in a UW tempo deck though
I love Nighthowler. I've been needing a card to act as Wight of Precinct Six 4-8 in my Modern Kill Mill deck, and Bonehoard and Mortivore were just too expensive. The only thing that would have been better than this for that would be a Sewer Nemesis reprint.
I really don't think this fits into modern merfolk. Modern merfolk curves out at 3 with Merrow Reejery and Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, and even then there are many builds that go down to three copies of Reejery and very few that run more than two copies of Kira between the maindeck and sideboard. That, and Aether Vial allow the deck to function with only 20 lands. Worse, the tokens are elementals rather than merfolk, so they don't benefit from the densely-packed tribal bonuses that make the deck work, most important being the islandwalk granted by Lord of Atlantis and Master of the Pearl Trident (seriously, without guaranteed damage the deck doesn't work).
Fitting Master of Waves into the deck means cutting cards at lower CMCs and then cutting even MORE cards so that you can add the extra islands you'll need to be able to cast your 2-of card at reasonable times in-game. That dilutes a deck that already has issues with running out of gas just to run a card that generates tokens that don't work with the core of the deck.
I'd be a lot more excited about a functional reprint of Silvergill Adept, really. Hell, a Silvergill Adept that cost UUU and didn't have the "reveal a merfolk" clause would be more exciting than this.
This is not to say that the card doesn't have other applications. I just don't see it being considered at all for any serious Modern Merfolk deck. I am excited about it for several EDH decks. It'll be especially nice running it with some global pumps and some repeatable flickering.
Worst case you get an X/X for 3, and it's black so it dodges some removal (while weak to others) but most importantly, if you bestow it (to say, a Lifebane Zombie?) then it becomes a critter again after the guy its attached to dies, only even bigger!
Not sure if I'd do 4-of, but it's easily a good 3-of. Sets up some nice devotion as well for the Merchant.
So in Nighthowler we have another bestow creature/enchantment that ISN'T a nymph. It's cool and all, but wasn't this supposed to be their gameplay gimmick and so far we have a whopping 1 nymph and more than that in non-nymph bestowers. Maybe it's just me, but I sort of got the impression that since the nymphs where servants of the gods that they would be a bigger part of the set that this. Heck, the sea goddess apparently would rather have some random crab as her servant. I don't remember crabs being mentioned in the plainswalkers' guide. So what gives?

Yeah, I'm not sure if he has a home in Modern Fish. There's just better cards available that I don't see him beating out for a spot. If I need a mana sink/finisher, I'd much rather run Coralhelm Commander which I can Vial in and level up at my convenience. With the Master you're either going to need to tap out to cast him or wait until your Vial has 4 counters - meaning you can't vial in anything else in your deck for the rest of the game. Neither option seems better than keeping some leak/remand mana open while having 2 counters on the Vial.
Master of Waves also makes you want to run 22 lands - I'd also much rather just cut down the lands to 20 and fit in a few Spellskites maindeck.
Maybe he'll be part of a new Fish deck but I don't see him fitting in the current version at all.
Pandora's Box might be good with Scry? (The exiling part, neverminding the goofy Timmy part).
Master of Waves is amazeballs. With two UU critters he's him plus five 2/1 tokens. He seems kind of OP with Purphoros...yeah, I'll just smack ya for 12 on resolution.
And as someone in the space industry 0_0 at Howler's Nyx gorgeousness. <3 <3 <3

that's not what happened at all. kamahl stabbed phage, akroma, and some old lady and they became korona. then korona got stabbed by her "prophets" and kamahl got drunk with a mutant centaur

And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)

Pyxis of Pandemonium = interesting fun card
Nighthowler = also nice card, four mana at least gives a 2+2 boost to enchanted critte, if they kill the crit, this cirt is at least 4 / 4
