Anyone else notice the ridiculous synergy the satyr has with the whip? Lifelink applies to all dmg dealt by a source. Soooooo free pumps? I mean it's a big stretch but still it makes him infinitely better. Still doesn't make him amazing though, but no draw back is no drawback. plus if you had something like sanguine blood it's like free life loss for your opponent. All of this is a gigantic stretch. But I was so curious as to how to make the card's mechanics turn into something good
Satyr is going to be a house against control decks, and pretty miserable against other aggro decks and midrange.
It doesn't easily trade with Boros Reckoner all that well, it will end up with you taking 7 or them paying a mana and you losing your dork and bolting you in the process, It is pretty miserable in the mirror, turning all the Lightning Strikes turn into searing blaze, and gets stone walled by ash zealot. Having it trade with a Loxodon Smiter will not only take up your entire turn 4, but hit you for 6
Its been a long time since Jackal Pup has been good enough to see standard play, and giving it a questionable firebreathing doesn't give it the boost it quite needs.
It can however run away with the game against a UB or UW control deck
Satyr will definitely see play. Don't overestimate a relative mana sink. Gives mono red a means to push through Loxodon Smiter which is huge.
At the cost of 6 life and a turn's worth of mana... pretty sure that will be ok for the G/W player that just has better defensive creatures throughout the curve.
Yeah, it will definitely be played. You will just never be excited to draw it. It's the sort of card you play because you are obliged to and it will put your win %age up a bit but you wish you could cut it.
It's fine, but with the good 2/1 in black and the outstanding 2/1 in white plus the other good 2/1 in g/w, I'm certainly looking other places than mono red first for aggro.
It is was a bloody COMMON Bellows Lizard a set ago. All it got was 1 extra power.
The difference between a 2/1 for 1 and a 1/1 for 1 is enormous. This guy is absolutely worth being a rare despite being such a suicide goat. I think the drawback is much more significant than others do, but this satyr will see play and spank people that get caught with their pants down.

Red has a better mana sink in hammer of purphorus and better one drops like rakdos cackler. This guy is good but what does he replace that RDW doesn't already have?
The satyr is one of those cards that makes me feel like a noob. My initial instinct is that it's actually a much better card than it seems and that I'm just not skilled enough at evaluating cards to figure out what makes it good. Anybody care to enlighten me?
You cannot be serious. 1 extra power on a 1 drop is like, a whole different card. It is a massive difference.
Not with a drawback like that considering the amount of burn being printed. People just want to just shove +30 creatures and go YOLO off BTE. Don't think that will be such a vital strategy anymore now that we get some ok'ish burn. I see him more as a sideboard card much like Reckless Waif was against control. But mainboard red? I wouldn't risk getting blown out.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.

I agree to an extent that the firebreathing is probably the most disappointed aspect on it. To be honest, I would have much rather paid 2 life and had it cost 1. Then again, I'm a crazy, crazy man and I love me some suicide blitz.
I am giggling over all of these folks that are judging the Fates harshly. It really
separates those with the imagination to build something fun from those who
want the game handed to them in the form of a super-efficient $50+ card.
Is the 1 power really worth it though compared to Bellows Lizard? I mean it is good that Blashemous Act is not in standard because I think that the Satyr would be avoided. Multiple of those Satyr suckers also poses for big problems with Anger of the Gods on the enemy side.
Would you play a 1/2 creature that can't block in an aggro deck? Because Cackler only has one power more and is really good. One power often is the difference between unplayable and good in aggressive red one drops.
Cause you know losing life for early game aggro is bad. Oh wait putrid leech would like to have a word with you. Although putrid leech is infinitely better due to lack of mana needed to pump it, but meh. Also with lifelink the satyr becomes better :P, it's passive dmg to you is negated.

Reaching 8 1-drops for the blitz strategies. In RDW it was not uncommon to have 8-12 1-drops (Some people ran Vexing Devil, which was a mistake IMO,and I had an unhealthy love for Waif beyond its useful shelf-life, admittedly).
This is an additive, not a replacement, to Cackler.
Triad of the Fates would make SO MUCH MORE SENSE as 1WUB, and there'd even be some decent untap mechanics available in those colors to open up some options in EDH. But nope... just pure BW, and the more I look at it the less I like what it does.

It doesn't take imagination to be handed yet another card that combos with Freed from the Real and an unhealthy amount of mana.
Also, Blink doesn't take all that much imagination at this point when you're talking about eternal formats like EDH. There are a gazillion triggers and honestly those value creatures are all the creatures that get played anyway.
The Fates are horrible, horrendous trash. They could have really pushed this in any number of ways, even if it meant something like bringing the P/T down from the 'square' 3/3 to round out the overall power, and give us something that is not SO, SO, SO slow that it makes Eater of Days look fast.

It's a high-risk, high-reward card. Certainly you don't want to go into a mirror match or against certain Midrange decks with him (Although he isn't worthless against midrange, as he will deal 4-6 damage before they can usually block him effectively). But against other types of decks, he's an intense beater that turns those land clumps that usually kill aggro into an actual huge advantage that can be used for something.
A 2 power 1 CMC creature in a fast RDW should be playable in Standard, and the drawback is much of the time meaningless. Either you win by turn 5 or you lose.
Love me a red mana sink!!! This is actually a red creature I want to topdeck late game.
The first time I read the Triad of Fates, I didnt realise it was legendary. It is such an awesome casual EDH card!

Red having any kind of early game reach is very significant.

The cards rotating out from the Innistrad block.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
The Satyr probably is everyone's favorite toy now...
