Well I just bought my playset for 30 last night. It will make my G/W deck that much better!! yes please wrath so i can respond.. I usually leave at least 4 open for the Advent anyhow so whats the big deal with that? Oh and all this sacrifice removal talk is mute if I happen to have a VoR on the field with this guy lol! I can smell the Theros gameday champion playmat.. mmmm
Are jokes that aren't even in remotely the same league as bob/arena.
You only asked for mandatory life loss triggers printed recently, not that they be on par with one of the strongest cards ever printed. The list of cards on bob's level is an extremely short one, that's an impossible criteria for almost all of magic, not just recent sets.

"A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus: 1. What am I trying to say? 2. What words will express it? 3. What image or idiom will make it clearer? 4. Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: 1. Could I put it more shortly? 2. Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?"
Everyone is either over or under evaluating this cat.
For those saying he isn't up to snuff for standard, look at Kavu Titan in his day- he was awesome but a 2/2 for 1G was under par probably more than a 3/3 for GW is today, and a 5/5 trample for 5 was just barely at standard playability. It was all in the options.
The Lion is even better since you can play him as an efficient creature and upgrade later. Remember Kargan Dragonlord? He was arguably better being red and ending up with flying, but this guy has the benefit of starting out as a 3/3 and being able to respond to sweepers.
He is really nice in that your opponent has to kill this guy before wrathing you if you have the mana opened.
He just does a lot of subtle things and is really solid.
He also fits better into a lot of decks that Voice doesn't, like Midrange decks that would never make the Voice elemental more than a 2/2- like Junk Midrange (which could be awesome- Thoughtseize, Fleecemane, Smiter, the new Gorgon, and Blood Baron/monstrosity forming a sweet curve with black removal- all the dudes being a huge roadblock for aggro and capable of singularly holding down the board and taking the game vs control)
I got a Lion Tribal deck I want to throw this one into. GW for a 3/3 that can for 3GW become a 4/4 that is Indestructible with Hexproof? Just awesomeness incarnate.
so... it looks like wizards is sick of U being the best color in magic... (I'm just observing... don't hate me for observing) and they decided to print absurd GW cards, in a set with really REALLY good mana fixing.
The GW decks in standard/eternal formats there it is again! are getting a lot of love from RTR/Theros so far.
It seems junk tokens in standard wouldn't mind having at least 1-2 of this guy as a contingency plan post-wrath.
maybe the modern GW hexproof deck will play 1-2 of these? I get how 5 mana for the monstrous cost is a lot, but that deck usually has mana to burn, seeing as the most mana they EVER use in 1 turn is 3 anyway; unless they play thrun. and he's a beatstick already.
Would legacy maveric ever want to play this? or at least test it?

I'm no expert in legacy (I pay a lot of attention to it but don't have the cards to play it)
