If hero's downfall should've been uncommon because murder is common, so Thoughtseize should've been uncommon because duress is common...
Or murder should've been uncommon because hand of death is common
Putrefy is uncommon. Artifacts are more common than planeswalkers. Being able to remove artifacts is better than being able to remove planeswalkers. Hero's Downfall is rare. That doesn't make any sense.

I fear I won't have much time to play Magic these days.
I get to watch worlds develop around me.
I get to watch great leaders, terrible oppressors, and trend setters rise and fall.
Limited, Standard, Modern, everything is a different playing field I feel I can observe, but will not actually touch.
I look forward to the stories I will hear.
And more so to the ones I will watch unfold first hand.
Isn't the unknown exciting?
Wow, a lot of whiners in this thread, like the Scry me a river thread.
On topic, solid removal is solid, I won't comment on the rarity since all of the people are commenting on it when it really should be a rare. But this will keep planeswalkers in check, so we won't see planewalker based decks any time too soon.
Medomai is as spoiled by TrollCreature, everything is discussed there. At least it can't be broken, infinite turns does not belong to standard, only in EDH where magical christmas wonderland exists.
The Satyr is a decent rare, Flash on a creature with Bestow would account with a lot of combat tricks.
#1 - What's the dumbest idea you ever had?
#2 - 15/15 for 15?
#1 - Make it dumber
#2 - Give it protection from removal and counter?
#1 - DUMBER!
#2 - Add Timewalk?
#1 - DAMN IT MAN, I SAID DUMB!! DUMB !!!
#2 - It destroys everything when it attacks.... And wait, I have a friend who plays mill decks... I want to beat him too.
#1 - Excellent! Recess is over, go back and learn sex-ed with the other 6th graders.

I take it you think that Putrefy should also be rare.

Glad they're giving mono-B some love. Also glad to see they're maintaining the power balance in this set (with this and Hythonia as the most recent examples).
What cards has mono black gotten? Besides the black god, which is probably the worst of the five, how is mono black better off than black as a support color?
I take it you think that Putrefy should also be rare.
The rules in Wizards right now is anything that mentions "Planeswalker" in its rule text has to be rare or m.rare. It's based on the idea that some special things should be kept special. In a similar vein, all planeswalkers are m.rare. It makes sense from a collectible card game standpoint.
If planeswalkers get mentioned more and more often, this might change. But most likely it's not going to change in the foreseeable future.

Erebos is better than Heliod who is better than Nylea.

Yeah this^, ugh this being instant means so many misplays by new players trying to kill the walker on your turn while you use an ability. Then the 3 minute argument about it and having to bring the judge in to explain to them and then them trying to take back the move.
I take it you think that Putrefy should also be rare.
In terms of limited, putrefy would have been rare if the draft format was triple DGM. Putrefy was almost always first pick and an entire packs worth would push everyone to play GB. If this card was uncommon it would skew limited.
Ordinarily, I would think Thoughtseize is too strong for Standard; since it can take any spell, it doesn't matter as much what spells are in the new set or in a particular deck. Thoughtseize pushes the game more toward attrition and card advantage than is typically correct. However, I think it can be right on occasion, and this is such an occasion.
This means that unlike stuff like shock lands, it probably won't be frequently printed en masse unless there is a good reason. Basically, make sure to pick yours up while Theros is still being opened. Not even going to get into the idea that WOTC views Thoughtseize as too powerful for standard.
Okay, so now the rabble rousing is focused on Putrefy instead of Dreadbore vs Downfall because Putrefy is an uncommon.
Putrefy is also two colors, so less accessible.
Your typical artifact is one helluva lot less dangerous than a damn Planeswalker. Half the time you probably don't want to use Putrefy on an artifact and want to save it for a creature anyway.
You're probably more likely to have the game swing in your favor/avoid getting killed by removing a Planeswalker than you are an artifact.

In a black + non-green deck is hardest (or impossible) to cast putrefy rather than downfall

You're starting to understand. Having these cards at uncommon rarity would not warp the limited format (except possibly Thoughtseize), so why is WotC printing them at such high rarity?

I think Hero's Downfall is a fine card but should be an uncommon. Bramblecrush was an uncommon in m14 and it destroyed PWs so I don't see why this couldn't too.
I take it you think that Putrefy should also be rare.
Putrefy is in a deck which needs both B and G, but this just requires to be put in a deck with black plus any color of your choice, this puts it in in the same context as a staple in any deck with black to combat both creatures and walkers. Also being multicolor narrows the number of decks you can put it in, being mono color places it in almost any deck which has that color.
