I guess what I'm trying to say is that the templating doesn't match between Legendary and non-Legendary creatures, which obviously is there for the Legend rule. The conflict with this is, if you're thinking like a computer (which I believe processing Magic, the stack, and name referencing, is firmly based around the way a computer processes information), the name reference has to be consistent otherwise your programs won't find the right item because the name is switched on you. There isn't a "this" clause to go by except that we naturally pretend that it happens in our minds (which is a good thing and it works). Like I said I'm probably over thinking this
As a CS major I couldn't resist replying. MTG does have syntax for referencing an object's name, it's "named". Think of a card's name as a property of a class. If a card said "whenever a card named X..." then if you changed the name the ability would no longer function. When a card says "Whenever X...", its referring to the object itself so name doesn't matter.
So something like:
Card artisan_of_forms = new Card;
artisan_of_forms.name = "Artisan of Forms";
There's the original card. Then, if you copied storm crow:
artisan_of_forms.name = "Storm Crow";
The object is still artisan of forms, so the ability still works. Only a property changed.
Am I alone in thinking that Gray Merchant of Asphodel is potentially really good? In monoblack that might be a 5 mana corrupt with a 2/4 body.
To me, that actually seems like a better card than the God.
I wouldnt go that far, hehe, but it does seem pretty dang good. On curve in magic x-mas land, you can have this guy drop, then Corrupt for a huge life-swing in MBC. He is a great common.

The Hundred Handed Giant might actually have a RELEVANT ability in EDH o.O
No. Seriously. Tokens are often easy to produce many of. Dozens of, even, are not hard to find on your doorstep.
BUT.
If your deck contains Hundred Handed-One and a way to copy its ability or clone the whole thing. . .
I mean he really might be just shy of a Moat in EDH.
And it will always be at least as easy to make more Hectoncheires as it will be to make tokens.
You only need TEN of these guys and you can block ONE THOUSAND ATTACKS.
x.x
You only need 100 OF THEM to block TEN THOUSAND URUK-HAI.
Alright, enough with the obvious math, factors of ten are easy to see.....
While you can do a LOT of ramping and multiplying in MTG, I think the difference between 100 and 1000 in EDH is probably like the difference between a 5th and 6th and 7th Land in 60 Card decks...
i.e., unless you have an actually infinite combo and you declare '200 billion' or something, this Giant will stop all non-infinite armies with ease!!!!
I am probably every color-combination it is possible to be, though it's really hard to figure out what it would mean to be 4-colored....it doesn't seem logical to be 4-colored without being 5-colored.
And here I was starting to think I was the only person who saw the common drain life guy. As someone who really enjoys playing mono-black, I am EXTREMELY please with that guy, and really liking this set for its mono-colored deck support in general. Hopefully we'll see Red/Black getting SOMETHING to deal with enchantments after all these years. With what we've seen so far, only blue can take on those gods, and I guess white can chain them to a mountain after their devotion is high enough... so yeah, give the other colors some options plz.
Omenspeaker seems pretty solid, likely playable. It doesn't draw a card, but Scry is almost half a card worth of value, and a 1/3 for 1U is solid enough rate. It's going to find your 3rd and 4th land drops and prevent 3-6 damage most likely, that's a good deal.
Side-note....a lot of the mythics seem really bad. Like perhaps there's something that makes devotion more than a timmy mechanic, but it seems rather underwhelming presently.

Honestly, I'd rather just play Avatar of Hope or Wall of Glare. Wall is a lot cheaper and Avatar has the bonus of having flying, an extra toughness point and a cost-reduction ability (that rarely ever comes into play but whatever). Both can block infinite creatures, though that's just a fog unless you make them indestructible/undamagable.

The card that got me most pumped was gods willing. That card slots right in as a heroic enabler. It also plays well with nivix cyclops, guttersnipe and young pyromancer. Some version of nivix blitz will likely survive rotation.
Yep. That one jumped right out. People are complaining as usual but I see a lot of interesting decks on the horizon.
You only need TEN of these guys and you can block ONE THOUSAND ATTACKS.
Not gonna lie, if you have ten 6/8s that you spent sixty mana making monstrous and you're still just using them to block, you are not using your resources very effectively.

Quotes from gaming:
From a discussion about skipping town and fleeing from the law:
"Quick, torch the legal system and run!" said no one, ever.
While trying to ambush a creature who favored grabbing and strangling PCs:
"Ok, so Tieflings are resistant to fire, right?" "Right" "Alright, so I light myself on fire so he can't grab me."
Am I alone in thinking that Gray Merchant of Asphodel is potentially really good? In monoblack that might be a 5 mana corrupt with a 2/4 body.
To me, that actually seems like a better card than the God.
State-based question...Will Gray Merchant's ETB see him as part of the Devotion? It seems that he would since he has to resolve before the ETB triggers, but I wanted to clarify. He is without a doubt an interesting card for Limited, but if he is coming in with at least a 4-point life swing, he may be Constructed playable.
Really? LOUSY SPOILERS?!? Did you want Tarmogoyf to be reprinted(for Standard)!?
Jeez. I'm thankful for any spoilers, regardless whether they are fodder or not.
This is just a taste of what's to come, I'm sure there will be some stupid, ridiculous, dumb card that will scream USE/ABUSE ME AND WIN! card waiting to be shown, though I honestly hope that's not the case.
The Gods are neat, not broken, overpowered, or winwinwin designed.
Just for the record, Hundred-Handed One may be the best card ever printed, ever in the history of ever, funny, flavorful and hilarious. All at the same time.
BTW, Hundred-Handed One's flavor text should just read: Mine mine mine mine mine mine mine mine mine mine mine...
I collect: Vedalken Heretic, Lorescale Coatl, Reaper King, Worldslayer, Woodwraith Corrupter, Lorthos, the Tidemaker. Soon to collect Conquering Manticore.
I demanded a Manticore, and Wizards delivered. I now demand a Chimaera. The REAL one, not, Chimeric items. I also demand a new Gorgon. And more Manticores please.

Yes, ETB is a triggered ability, and he must be on the field for it to trigger in the first place, ie he must be resolved. So, he does count towards the total mana for devotion when the ETB triggered ability resolves after that, if he is still on the battlefield at that time.

Yes, he counts himself, so at the VERY least it will be a 4 point life swing plus a 2/4 body.
But realistically, by the time he would come out you should have somewhere between 1 and 5 other black mana symbols out there.
If it is a -3/+3 swing, it still probably doesn't justify the cost, but it is certainly not bad. At -4/+4 it is a good drop. Anything at +5/-5 or better and he becomes a straight up Gamebreaker, and it doesn't seem *that* hard to do.
I know a lot of people seem hard to please, but Heliod is almost exactly what I was looking for to put in the EDH enchantress/token deck I've been gathering cards for. Although I would have preferred lifelink to vigilence.
